This scene has a lot of symbolic. Before the war he was just a boy and one that was always critical towards the war and the nazis. He became battle hardened. I think this scene shows that the wolf doesn't want to attack him because the wolf doesn't sees him as food. He isn't a sheep anymore, he is a wolf now and that's something that you get never rid off again. I wonder how many german soldiers where highly suicidal and doing attacks and charges not because they believed in victory, just because they wanted to end it now.

I dont even want to know how many of our boys did things like that. Because the could not believe life could be lifable anymore. I mean, all world only looks at them as evil. But think about it from a human perspective. Today we have soldiers coming home from a 6 year journey in middle east and are broken because of what they saw. And even tho i know they experienced cruelty, they mostly lifed in a kind of safe space, winning on our side, a lot of support and so on. Now imagine living through eastern front alone... 4 years. I do not even understand where they took energy to get up in the morning. Heartbreaking...

This was right after he killed the child and executed the partisans, you can tell he just doesn’t want to live anymore (hence the looking up at the sky and the wolf) I also think at this point Friedhelm started to feel intense guilt for what he had done and that he simply couldn’t live with himself after the war due to his actions, such a heartbreaking series……

This series was so good. I really wish there were more like this, however they won't do it as good as Generation War did.

@@drownindesigner I agree! I was so touched by Friedhelm's character, he reminded me of myself in a lot of ways and how I would've reacted in his situation.

You can see his uniform changing with him thoughout the war...from an innocent boy wearing the wehrmacht uniform to a killer of innocent boys wearing the waffen SS one.

Actually, the camo on his smock is Splittertarnmuster which was issued to Wehrmacht units whereas Waffen-SS camo is resemblant to Flecktarn. Nevertheless, it does show how Friedhelm became more accustomed to war by adopting a more war-like look.

what uniform wear the yankee army after kill almost 200 thousand japanese civilian with two nukes?, or after kill the 300 thousand german civilians in Bremen in just one night? so on, look like the waffen SS uniform was not SO killer after all

He isn't wearing a Waffen SS uniform. After Italy defected from the Axis Powers, Germany seized vast stocks of supplies, including camouflage cloth that was subsequently used to make uniform items, including jackets, smocks and helmet covers for the German Army.
