@cloudconnected14763 жыл бұрын
@@MudRogue Indeed. They were strongest army ever. Litterally all historians (US, GB, USSR and others) agreed that WW2 was won with USA weapons and supply, British time bought and Soviet blood. While Germany fought alone (not counting Italy who is more of baggage, pushed by Greece on very start and almost lost completely North Africa or Japan who barely had any influence beside moving away some part of USA army). Germany had to conquer Europe, fight British in Europe, fight British on North Africa, defend Italy and fight USSR, all while both GB and USSR are being supplied from USA. If Italy were any good and Yugoslavia didn't interfere with Hitler's plan on attacking USSR... or if any of GB/USA/USSR failed, we would have entirely different history. Not to mention that USA atomic bomb (project manhattan) and military expansion after WW2 are mostly German scientists and technology which was transported back to USA. There are numerous documentaries about it. (Von Braun / mission in Norway to thwart nazi atomic bomb). Germany was top notch. Of course from their view, they were fighting enemy who attacked them because they liberated German occupied teritories and they knew nothing about concentration camps (also existing documentaries on how SS managed to hide concentration camps true purpose from Red Cross and public). You can't judge German soliders from today point of view and knowledge :)

Band if Brothers portrays them pretty well too. While it’s made clear that by that time, the Germans were fighting a losing battle, they’re portrayed as willing to fight tooth and nail for their homes and make it as painful as possible to gain any ground. The episodes covering Market Garden and Bastogne were brilliantly done in that regard.
@dms-f16 Жыл бұрын
"Generation War", a powerful mini-series about the damage WW2 does to a group of friends. In various ways, they lose themselves. Some die, others survive, but parts of them are long gone. The two brothers especially have spectacular character arcs each. Theirs is a cautionary tale about what it takes to make it through the adversity of inhumanity. For Friedhelm it was all about becoming nihilistic to the point of self-destruction, the war killing the best parts of him. For Wilhelm it was about regaining parts of that lost humanity, by slowly, yet decidedly detaching himself from the warmachine. 10/10, highly recommended.

The German uniforms were beautiful, and a lot of people are pointing that out. But what's even more fascinating is that you can tell who was in the Heer longer depending on which uniform they were wearing. For example, a lot of the Wehrmacht soldiers, including Friedhelm, are wearing M40's & M42 uniforms, which means they probably enlisted/were conscripted to fight in Operation Barbarossa & the Eastern Front. Wilhelm however is wearing an M36 uniform, which means he was in the Wehrmacht years before the war even began, and probably saw action in Poland or France. Hence why he's significantly more restrained than the average trigger happy soldier, but actually sees his men beyond cannon fodder for an objective.

I think not having subtitles makes it more interesting. In movies I’m so use to just seen endless German soldiers being mowed down and then always shouting ‘actung!’ “Sprengelegen!” ‘Schnell’ to the point they are stereotyped. Having no subtitles and being able to watch the acting direct the situation gives you the perspective a Russian/British person would have being captured.

Fascinating video and much appreciate the upload! Most of my relatives at the time was in combat in the East for the Wehrmacht during WW2. My Grandfather was in the 6th army 44th infantry division and saw action in Poland, France and Kharkov. He was later captured along with thousands of men at Stalingrad. Ultimately he lost 80 pounds of body weight moving around different Russian labour camps before finally returning home to Germany in the mid 1950s and lived a long peaceful life. His younger brother started off the war in the East as part of the 439th Regiment of the 134th Division and was at the battle of Moscow then later he was one of 9 survivors out of 1,000 men in his regiment to die in the battle of Kursk where he was injured. He survived the end of the war as part of the 512th heavy tank destroyer battalion as a loader for the Jagdtiger when he surrendered to the Americans by the end of the war in May 1945.

My only issue is the way some German soldiers hold their MP40 by the magazine. Every weapons expert in every video of the MP40 states it should never be held by the magazine. The magazine is single stack and is not tightly held by the magazine well. Holding it may cause a misalignment which can jam the weapon. In the middle of a firefight, this can lead to disastrous results. Training manual says it should always be held by the magazine well. In fact, it is shaped to be held exactly there.

He ends up joining the resistance on the way out. 2 of them are young women. 1 of whom is a singer, who was having an affair with an Officer The other was a young nurse serving on/near the Eastern Front. The best part is that the older brother is the officer shown here, and was lauded throughout the first few episodes as what a man serving dutifully to his country should be like. His father is very proud of him and his friends look up to him. Meanwhile his younger brother, who is more sensitive and conscientious, is labelled a coward and his father hates him and refuses to see him when he comes back from leave. In the end, the younger brother broke and deserted, was caught and was sent to a penal battalion, whilst the younger brother continued to serve dutifully (if not willingly) up until the very end when he performed the ultimate sacrifice and saved a bunch of hitlerjugend from getting massacred by Russians at the end of the war. So in the end, the younger brother was the better soldier and the 'better' man
