I'm an electrician by trade myself. I enjoy your videos and have learned a couple of things I didn't know from them. For example, I didn't realize that you could check the mechanism by feeling for the gears through the hole up top. One safety tip, though: One should always disconnect the hot first: hot, then neutral, then ground. (When reconnecting, it's ground, neutral, hot.) But I did like how you capped off the hot with a wire nut while working. That's always a good extra safety step, even with the power off, as you never know when some idiot will turn the power back on without checking why it's off.

WHAT???, I spent all day dreaming of having a nice hot jacuzzi, and I turned the Jandi valves to to correct position and turned on the gas heater. I went all dressed up with my cocktail in hand out to my jacuzzi, and everything was off!. Any time you want to fix something you come to KZbin.com, right? After a few keyword searches, I found this post. Viola, the timer was just tripped at the top of the hour and was too close to turn off time. "...pull out the timer away from the turn off peg, and all good." Game on Negra Modelo. Dude, you rock Generation Tres.

Great advice here: First, without turning off power, stick your finger into this high voltage device to make sure it's working, then remove the ground safety wire first to make sure your imminent electrocution isn't spared, followed by the rest of the live wires while the power is still on. I really hope nobody has electrocuted themselves after watching this video.

@stevohouston It is my belief that knowledge is to be shared. You should be aware that it is not illegal for homeowner to do electrical work in their own homes. People are not going to get killed by learning how to do basic electrical work. They get killed by not learing.

@scottNlillianNkelly Good point. Not too concerned about that with a timer. Always with an electrical service. Still that is the right order when working with wires.

it would have been nice to know what wires go where and why. Not just stick the wires back where they were. What if your installing a new timer and you dont have wires already attached?

@Generation3electric I was taught that even when replacing outlets and lights .Why you ask because when you discount the hot first on any thing your working on you don't have worry so much about getting shock even tho the neutral could always have another circuit coming back on that neutral. I don't how state laws are for where you live but we are allowed to have 1 neutral for every two circuits. Accept for dedicated circuits going to bathrooms, pools ,and kitchens

@stevohouston Humm. According to hustiontx.gov. Exempt work. section 301.2. 4. Repair or replacement of current-carrying parts of a switch, contactor or control device. 5. Reinstallation of attachment plug receptacles, but not the outlets therefor. 6. Repair or replacement of any overcurrent device of the same capacity in the same location. The people of Texas do not have to hire you to replace an outlet switch or a timer. I do agree with you about handymen. Hire an electrician!!

this might actually be a good video if 1 you taught people that you should always turn the power off first! and 2 if you actually told people what each wire was for i.e. what is the red wire? what are the black ones. this info is the info most people are looking for, how to actually wire this timer. any jackass can unhook a wire and re hook it up, knowing what each of the wires is is what will actually help

Great video and helpful too but I am little confused. I am replacing my pump motor 1 HP USQ1102 but I forgot the locations of the wire I took off from the Intermatic timer. My motor has green which I know but am confused between white and red. I have similar timer with three points. I am guessing that I took the white from 1st connector and red from third. Would you have any idea..

They get killed by doing work live without turning the breaker off first which you do not do in many of your videos including this one. Nice spark. If your making videos to train homeowners how to do "basic" electric work why don't you start with safety.

So much detail left out unfortunately I have no idea which wire is which with this information it's very vague does not give detail again which wire goes to the clock timer which wire goes to the line going out to the pump motor or to the lights need to know which is the line coming from the breakers and where do they go simple things like that. Unfortunately this is very vague that leaves out detail of what wire is which what does it do why does it do it basic common sense and changing out the mechanism is not that useful most people can figure that part out themselves the technical is where they needed the help.
