“It’s not a sin to get knocked down, it’s a sin to stay down.” That was Carl Brashear's favorite saying.
Watch to see Chief Warrant Officer 4 Phillip Brashear of the U.S. Army Reserve honor his father, the first African-American master diver in U.S. Navy’s history. The film "Men of Honor" was based on his inspiring story of overcoming physical and racial adversity.

I was a Navy Recruiter in Virginia Beach and got to be buddies with MC Brashear. He and I had alot in common both having grown up on tobacco fields and being poor in Kentucky. He used to call me hillbilly and I would call him ridgerunner. He would just chuckle. I was out of the military for 15 years and joined the Army Reserve. I met CWO Brashear on the elevator at the FT Eustis Reserve and he was surprised that I knew his father. My soldiers always doubted some of my stories but this encounter really changed their minds. I am very proud to have knowm MC Brashear. The Oris watch at the beginning of video is the Carl Brashear very limited edition . CWO Brashear told me " We didnt know that dad was a hero until we attended the movie being shown at a HBCU one day. It was the admirations that the young people displayed "

That watch company isnt honoring a black man from America , theyre honoring an American legend who happens to be black . His ethnicity may be relevant , but his drive and desire are what i admire most .

Everyone needs a bit of iron will to get on in life, it's too easy to just say I can't or I will not because it's too hard. Yeah, the Post WW-II Navy was not a pleasant place for some persons. The one thing about our country is that it does correct its errors. It was not an easy road for your dad, and since I am also a professional pilot, I am positive flying was not an easy road for you either. Nothing in life that is worthwhile is easy. In my retirement I fish a lot, I also am teaching myself to read write and speak Russian to say its a challenge is an understatement. I have not quite, and I got four years and then some into it. My favorite musician of all time is Louis Armstrong; there were a lot of obstacles in his life, yet without them, his music would not be what it is. The biggest testament to your day is you and how you turned out. Fathers are important, especially for boys.

I can not GET OVER how much your son, looks like his grandfather. Its crazy how grandkids, as childern will resmble their grandparents more than their parents. My brother, Jim, if you were to hold a photo of him at 12 and of my grandfather at 12, youd think they were the same person, that my brother had an old timey type photo taken.. thats what everyone thought every time they saw that picture of my grandpa at his communion when he was 12, Strangely enough, the date on that photo? December 4th, 1941.. My dad still has the picture somewhere, ill have to see if I can get him to send me a picture of it and ill post them side by side..
