One thing I like about this guy is that there's a lot of detail about him that makes him feel like an early incarnation of Classics Prime's body. The angular chest window, the shape of the shoulders, the way the torso looks, panels hanging off the arms, even the transformation has a Classics Prime feel. Put them side by side and there is a lot of similarity, imo.

This is one of the choices Thrilling 30 made for its IDW figures that really has me scratching my head. Aside from making Brainstorm a Voyager and choosing Trailbreaker of all people from the Lost Light... why THIS Orion Pax? It's a cool design to be sure... but its single appearance (before the spotlight which was made to promote the figure itself) was in a few panels in a single comic that wasn't about him (Spotlight: Blurr) which was extra material that you didn't need to read as opposed to the main series. And then the design was never used again (until, again, the spotlight made to promote him) and was at odds with other flashbacks which showed designs for Orion Pax which, while varying slightly, never looked anything like this. The only thing I can think of is that they wanted an IDW Deluxe Optimus to parallel their IDW Deluxe Megatron, but this is still such a bizarre and obscure pick. Still, cool design and a cool figure.

Trailbreaker was more because he was one of the only ones from the original '84 cast who didn't have an updated toy, the IDW design was just relevant at the time.

One of my personal favorite aspects of this figure would be the unmentioned port in his ax that can hold his gun. I assume that that wonderful little feature was in reference to his animated counterpart's rocket-ax. Such a nice little detail.

It's on the blade itself, the larger translucent piece, you should see a half of a hexagon, it's right next to the plug for vehicle mode storage.

Synonyms. The orange is translucent and transparent, the words mean the same thing.

Technically there is a difference, if a bit nitpicky. Transparent means one can actually see through it. Translucent means light can get through, but not necessarily be seen through. I think it's like squares and rectangles. If something is transparent it's also translucent, but something can be translucent but not transparent.

It's... not really that old. This was three years ago. The figures in Combiner Wars, Titans Return and RiD still have the same amount of quality and such shown in this figure, with TR and RiD being just as if not more creative.

its old to me because it kinda represents a time where Hasbro didn't go.all in on the line wide gimmicks but focussed on good toys instead

But the toys are still incredibly good and very imaginitive. And if line-wide gimmicks are your issue; Titans Return's is very non-intrusive (and in some cases like Chromedome leads to a better, smoother transformation) and RiD's gimmick in the Warrior, Legion and Mini-Con 2-pack classes is relegated to scanning a badge. ie nothing intrusive to the figure If you're holding back just because TR has a Headmaster gimmick, you're missing out on some of the best Transformers toys in a while

This might be my favorite toy that I have never had any desire to own. (I know that sounds weird) I really like the engineering and would have been all over a new head retool into a different character that wasn't a prime. I was almost tempted by the Funpub reuses but with the prices, I never ended up looking at getting one. I totally agree with you on the recolors that could have been. I think with a different head and color placement he would have looked very different.

I think the black part of the head plate was intended to be translucent plastic to allow the light piping to work and the plastic wouldn't work and needed to be replaced.

TJ, you stated that Orion Pax lacked a toy until this one, however, there was an E-HOBBY repaint of kup with a new head that came packaged with a repaint of wheelie as Dion.

what I saw with the silver paneling in the back, was a pick up truck. I'm imagining that would have been Orion's original vehicle form before being upgraded to a bigger more effective vehicle form, seeing as both a pick up and big rig are forma of cargo trucks.

There was another Orion Pax figure before this one. He was one of the first ever Botcon exclusives that was just a straight up repaint of G1 Kup. But this was the first Orion Pax that you don't have to pay an arm and leg for if you weren't lucky enough to able to afford to attend Botcon and don't want to pay insane after market prices. I have this guy on my shelf standing in as my G1 Orion Pax even though he looks NOTHING like the Animation model because he's probably the only Orion Pax I'm ever going to get. There is a new TR Kup that with a new head that's actually molded to look like the animation model could be repainted into a screen accurate Orion Pax but I some how doubt Hasbro will ever actually do it. I totally agree, this mold should have been used more and yes he did include a copy of the comic book "Spotlight: Orion Pax" with variant cover. That's one of the reasons I decided to get him in the first place because I don't have a comic book store where I live so that was a rare opportunity for me to get a comic I probably never would have read otherwise. Of course if he didn't come with that comic then I probably would of missed out on a great mold because he doesn't look like the G1 Cartoon. Or maybe I would of caved and got him anyway for the aforementioned reason that I'll probably never see another Orion Pax in toy form again.

And according to the comics, this is an upgraded Orion, and he had a mouthplate on his old body. Zeta Prime even mentions it as him pining for Pax 1.0 after the upgrade.

I have to say I''m really glad Generations (Combiner Wars & Titans Return) are designing the toys to look like both the G1 toy, but to also have elements based on the comic book interpretation. As someone who doesn't read too many Transformer comics, I don't have as much of a connection with comic based figures.

Also, am I the only one who thinks the jet-like molding might be a reference to the AOE Prime's Jet boots? I know he came out well before the movie did, but I just like to think that the toy designer saw the early version of the scene, and was like: "Sure, why not; I've got the budget."

The reason bots have cabs, and windshields, and cockpits, ect, is because when the Quintessons enslaved them they modified their bodies as well as the Allspark (Or Vector Sigma, or whatever the life giving relic is for whatever universe you're talking about) so that all Cybertronians would have cockpits for the aliens they sold them to to ride in

The tech detail behind the windshield in vehicle mode doesn't exist in fiction, it's a limitation of the toy and nothing more.

What limitation? It's intentionally put there and it's not part of the engineering

Because it's there in the fiction's robot mode and the toy is to small to include engineering to make it disappear for vehicle mode, hence a limitation.
