In defense of Chancellor Lena Sow, Starlight Beacon was a proof of concept. Had the Nihl not struck preemptively, she likely would have had a network of Star Bases built to connect the outer rim. She really needed a navy first, but without a clear and present danger, getting one funded would be difficult.

Coming up with concepts is one thing actually being able to pull them off and to have the knowhow to get them funded is another. As he said in the video she walked around with two big cats to distract everyone from her shortcomings. Making a mega lighthouse that makes the outer rim safer is a cool idea but it's just as practical as Elon wanting to make the Sahara desert into a solar power farm, sure it makes sense on paper but in reality it's close to impossible.

The Republic would have succeeded if, say, there was a Core Senate, a Colonies Senate, a Mid-Rim Senate, an Outer Rim Senate and so on. Form multiple senates to govern smaller areas. Then have the Galactic Republic take care of issues between these Senates.

@@GenerationTech A federation would be a better alternative to the republic and the senate. The senate was too large and could not be expected to govern every system, be it a core word or some outer rim planet with a 5-figure population. A local government could rule a bunch of planets in an area, a government could administer a couple of these local governments in a sector, these governments could come together to form a state and that state would be part of the main government. The pros would be that places would be better ruled and managed. The cons are that governments will probably fight against the other over resources, money, etc.

Point being, ... as long as you have group differences you will always have political factionalism. 2.) Darth Bane, first book mention a lot of the Sith candidates come from near Hutt space and they were smugglers, pirates, loosely translates to street samurai. And from time to time when they get tired of the Brotherhood of Darkness, they just drift back into their smuggler clans. But even before the books of Bane, us science nerds was using what ever the government put out from 1980's to 90's on tech and we apply that to sci fi rpg. Due to the hazards of space travel, the basic cargo ship will have to be built like a tank. After a few generation a given colony will be related by blood or marriage. So you will have a governing council of corporate elders conducting union trades/ dense pacts.

@@GenerationTech I see your point. A government restructure into a constitutional republic would eliminate the outer rim being trampled by the core on major issues, and vice versa. A straight democracy is only good for the will of the majority, which would put the outer rim back on the curb. I like to think of it like the United States, where the divided up territories are like states, and the Galactic Senate is the federal government.

Honestly, the Empire probably had the right idea with the Corporate Sector. They were just too unnecessarily evil to utilize it properly. Some kind of Homesteading Act would probably be helpful, too. Most important of all, though, is a level of Military presence. A Space Mounties would be helpful, too. Maybe give the Judicial Force some actual budget. Seeing as the primary threat is largely pirates, a couple of Cruisers for flagships and bulk out their forces with frigates and corvettes. You could have a Starfighter squadron on every planet, for instance.

Decentralized states tend to have this issue as well. The tax payor states tend to view the tax recipient states as a drain and do everything in their power to limit the power of the states that need the resources because they "drain the coffers". See also NYC politics dominating NY State, California politics and their stances towards the Fed "not doing enough" with "their money". Unfortunately, California, Texas, New York, and Florida have economies, geographic sizes, and populations more akin to entire nations and the rest of us are just along for the ride as "periphery" states.

I have other solution. The Republic stayed in the Core Worlds and the Colonies and let the rest of the galaxy developed their own polities. Those who are pro-Republic such as Naboo, Iridonia, Kashyyyk and Mon Cala can become Republic's allies while those who wanted nothing to do with the Republic can go do whatever they wanted as long as they do not become enemies of the Republic and its allies.

Not just Yoda. Being tied to the Republic made the Jedi focus on the Republic while they ignored everything on the outside. It also asks the question what they could have done without risking what they had. The Republic would never move against the Hutt Cartel. That would have been too dangerous, too risky and too expensive. But it limited the Jedi's ability to work in Hutt Space. Too many active Jedi there could be seen as them operating with the permission of the Republic. And the trouble of having to work with every planetary government that is not part of the Republic would have been a nightmare. Especially in the Outer Rim. And again the problem of not appearing as Republic representatives when everyone knew that the Jedi supported the Republic. On the other hand, it raises the question where the Republic would have gone without the Jedi being a part of it. In short, it's a mess.

I don't understand a lot about Star Wars... Based on what I've seen they should just do this: Life supporting planets are for habitats and Farming/Food , Space above the planets for industry , Non habitable planets/asteroids for resource mining, Droids to create colonies/infrastructure on the outer rim.

The problem is that they still would need a security force. A single lightly armed freighter can destroy the entire infrastructure of a fledgling system that has no defences. And we have seen pirates with aged and sometimes even modern military ships. The crime syndicates of the galaxy would swarm undefended colonies, sometimes even taking them over, reducing the colonists to slaves. Quickly you would have miniature Empires. And with a security force comes the need for an infrastructure to support it and all that costs money.

The problem is they still would have to secure the area of space. Sure, the ex-soldiers could have defended themselves against most if not all planetary dangers, but just one armed freighter can raze entire settlements. The Roman Empire already had troops in the area from the conquest and securing the border. The Imperial Navy, despite it's size, was already stretched thin.

Competition has always been internal. Such as between Coruscant, alsakaan and Corellia which had their own power struggles for thousands of years. Sometimes hot or sometimes cold. They stretched from the core to the outer rim with them supporting all manner of projects to help worlds and people in their spheres of influence

@_peters6221 10,000 years? There were major wars such as the Great Galactic War, Jedi Civil War, etc less than 5000 years before the Battle of Yavin. The longest peaces in Star Wars are the Galactic Dark Age (900-1000 years of which we know next to nothing) and the Ruusan Reformation (also about that length).

The Old Republic before the New Sith Wars made it work. They had a unified army and navy keeping things safe so that civilization could spread and the rim worlds would prosper. Just get the Empire and put a Jedi in charge. (LOL ROAN AND MARASIAH FEL) That ought to fix things.

Funnily enough, after the brutal Pius Dea cult was overthrown by the Jedi and Republic loyalists, a Jedi Master was elected to the position of Supreme Chancellor to lead the rebuilding efforts. Much to the Master's horror, he had proven popular enough to be re-elected (multiple times, in fact) because of how prosperous his policies were for the common man. I can imagine that finally being able to step down was a relief.

If the star wars galaxies so called development mirrors the real world then The prosperity of the core worlds and mid rim is largely predicated on the importation of goods and materials from less developed worlds, many of which are in the outer rim. There is a direct incentive for powerful capitalist entities in the outer rim to ensure the maintanence of low business costs in those regions so they can buy cheap there and sell high in the core. Regulation improves the standards of living for workers and even consumers to an extent but they reduce profit which slows down growth of the business. Of course they don't need to grow as fast as they possibly can but they figure if they don't do it someone else will and they don't want to be the one who loses out because they didn't do it. That's why the seperatist council agreed to fund the clone war.

I would argue that a more passive "world police force" would have achieved the same results, albeit at a slightly slower but much more stable rate, but with less chaos and less loss of life, without the need for hegemony. That would be much more difficult, however, as it would require nations to look beyond their borders and care about the well-being of others as much as they care about themselves.

As a Canadian living under one of the most authoritative governments the western world has seen; I could not fail to see the comparisons you were showing throughout this video and wrapped up with at the end. I am as it would seem, an outer rim resident watching the forceful hand slap down upon my fellow citizens. I know some see the future benefits of these actions today, but the harm they are creating to the lives of today should not be ignored. The efforts to create the core in the outer rim, brings with it the harsh realities of the despair that the core currently enjoys. Hence wanting to live in the outer rim. Sure there are dangers of living here, but those are less likely to be generational like in the core. Humanity needs the core and the rim, to allow folks to find their own place in the galaxy. The diversity of having all these differing areas is more the scenic. If everywhere is the same, ruled by the same rules, then it don't matter if the water is pink or blue, you are a dirt miner no matter where you go. This stagnation will be the demise of a civilization's ability to adapt and progress. I really enjoyed this video, and the provocative ideas it invoked, thank you.

Here's how I'd change government of the SW galaxy: create groups of planets to create sub-sectors, sub-sectors into sectors, sectors into super sectors. Each level has their own senate with representatives for the next level down, with a Galactic Senate providing representation for the super sectors. Also, provide for a military in order to provide plenty of jobs and security for shipping. Finally, have the Jedi or a similar order set up bases on at least the most heavily settled planets. So, to further explain, here's the senates and who they represent: The Sub-sector senators represent the individual planets The Sector senators represent the sub-sectors The Super-sector senators represent the sectors The Galactic Republic senators represent the super-sectors

Back in the times of Cold War three European nations made a name for themselves as members of UN peacekeeping efforts. Two neitral countries - Sweden and Ireland - and one belonging to the Soviet Bloc - Poland. When Cold War had ended all 3 of this countries decided to keep up their efforts, albeit with time 2 of them changed their alliances.

The major malfunction of the Republic was giving industries their own senate representation. Secondly, was allowing droids to be chattel slaves (droid freedom being a under-mentioned part of the Separatist agenda of the Techno Union). What was unrealistic was the Separatists had both the Trade Federation that owned and produced many millions of droid slaves, and the Techno Union. Permitting other slavery, of Twileks, among others, esp by the Hutts was also a big problem.

For your proposal, IIRC the Seswenna sector is already the wealthiest and has the best planetary defense forces in the Outer Rim, so it would be the easiest to lift up to Core standards. But the problem is that you have already families like the Tarkins holding power there.

I theorize that no one government can rule over everything. There will always be competing governments or outsiders/frontiersmen. I feel like slowly building economic and military ties with individual systems or sectors in the Outer Rim is the best, most sustainable strategy.

I think a better solution that would, for one, cost alot less, and for two, would partially help the developememt of the outer rim aswell, is funding the creation of Sector defense forces, born from one or multiple PDFs in said sector. The CIS would've been able to solve these issues. Had Palpatine not corrupted Dooku the galaxy would have been in a much better way. There wouldn't have needed to be an empire to force economic and social progress, that could've happened naturally via cooperation. The galaxy wouldn't have gone back to an even more inept New Republic or have had to face the semi-fascists of the First Order. Dooku was a great unifier who brought together systems, planets and people which had nothing in common, but they could all work for the good of the galaxy. The CIS may have become a power to rival the Republic with worlds like Kashyyyk, Onderon, Raxus Secundus, Umbara, Ryloth, and many more all willing joining their ranks, and what's more is that they would've enforced the law with a military, most likely one carved from the ranks of various Planetary Defence Forces. We'd see Kerkoidians, Wookie warriors, Umbarans, Onderon royal guards, Neimodian government forces, all working together in unified task forces to tackle crime lords like the Hutts, Pykes and Black Sun.

The problem is that in a galaxy of millions of systems, only systems with something very unique would have a leg up over the existing systems. Spreading out just to spread out simply isn't profitable: you're losing out on agglomeration effects and your logistics becomes complicated. If you're spending tax credits to send a high-tech trade ship to some faraway planet just so that you can make someone's dream of running a subsistence farm a reality, you'll need to explain to your voters "why".

But I'm not paying for it. My hard earned tax credits are desperately needed right here on Coruscant! Governments are not immune to fundamental economic forces. If you run at a loss, someone will have to pay. The good news is that government does plenty of stuff that has a positive profit margin - even if they are sometimes happy to let the first order profit go to someone else with the full knowledge that it will come back to them in the form of taxes. As an example of the latter, take the US interstate road system. An enormous investment and one that according to a 1990 paper had already then paid for itself six times over. The US govt never made a dime directly (no road tolls), but they happily took the taxes of companies that were that much more profitable as a result.

The best way to control everything is to stop trying to control everything. The people can self govern when a culture of equitability and stewardship of the collective good exists, a culture that runs completely counter to the expansionist mindset of both the republic and the empire. Those who always seek to take more will tend to lose it all, while those who are willing to give all of themselves will tend to gain more than they could ever ask for, and that's true of both people and governments. Especially on a galactic scale, the best way to get people on board isn't to try to funnel a bunch of money into projects and then having to figure out how to wrangle in all the corporate entities you gave free reign and a bunch of money to, it's to figure out the needs of the people in the places you want to be friendly with and find those who are willing and able to make it happen, and now the next time you have a problem to solve you'll have an entire new planet/star system/sector of people willing to do what was done for them. Military might is needed to some extent since not all groups will be willing to participate and though the galactic government should never be starting fights it should be able to end them if the need arises. Idk how to implement that, but that's what voting is for. TLDR Do mutual aid. People helping people is always going to be a better way forward than trying to fit everything into a rigid structure, especially when that structure is extremely flawed and unequitable (arguably by design depending on what government you're talking about).

It's wack a mole, with any kind of civilization the issue comes down to travel speed, how fast can you react to any kind of situation. If it takes 24 hours for the police to turn up, then there will be crime, criminals aren't going to buy real estate next door to the police station, they will want to work in environments where there is less crime enforcement. The issue was never that the outer rim was breeding criminals, but that the republic was breeding criminals, and they were moving to the outer rim. What the republic needed was to build a fair society, in a galaxy where wealth is only inherited or stolen it makes sense that the destitute would be forced to steal in order to survive. What the republic should have done was dissolve the corrupt Senate and send the hypocritical Jedi into exile, then announce massive infrastructure projects to create jobs, think giant space stations with massive mining lasers to turn useless planets into raw materials that can then be refined to produce more giant moon sized space stations. They should also build a giant response force that can be called on to immediately deal with any kind of threats, and hire lots of people to be a part of this response force, there by reducing crime and creating more jobs.
