Love this! Is there a playback setting that lets you run it through a tape loop without recording? I'm curious how that works!
@pierresgenerativemusic6 күн бұрын
It has three heads so it continuously records, then play then erase the audio on a tiny little portion of running tape, the loop is just a convenient way of not having to run through kilometers of tape.

I think that's a visualizer from DigDug DIY. They're a maker that doesn't have regular stock of them, you just need to keep an eye out for when they drop or sign up for their mailing list.

hey! just curious to know what you mean by "running through the tape" is it either recording or playing, no?
@pierresgenerativemusicАй бұрын
No there are tape recorders that have three heads, so that you can record and play back at the same time so the sound is made analogue which is a sort of filter that sounds a bit more lofi, warm and distorted.

Beautiful little generative loop. Is the tape loop constantly getting recorded onto from the synth or vice versa?
@pierresgenerativemusicАй бұрын
Yeah it’s got 3 heads so it can simultaneously record the OP-XY on tape and then the third head plays the tape sound which is what you hear. FYI The tape loop in about 10s long so where the tape is spliced you hear a little dip in volume, quite subtle but the character of the sound gets altered quite a bit which is what I was looking for here. They say tape glues it all together. What do you think?
@wholeheartedsongsАй бұрын
@ yeah it has really nice texture to it. I think I have a similar tape loop that I purchased online. It looks similar in design. I'm still confused though so is it constantly overdubbing or recording to tape and then playing it back? It's just weird because normally if you're in recording mode, it's not playing it back at the same time.
@pierresgenerativemusicАй бұрын
@wholeheartedsongs most tape deck are two heads: erase and a head that can either play or record. On a three head deck you can do all things simultaneously. It’s not overdubbing because the erase head resets the tape just before it gets recorded and played… and erased again. In this configuration it’s basically a sort of digital to analogue converter…

interesting I wonder if that would work on my task 4 tracks. I'm pretty new to tape looping

This is most compelling use of the XY I’ve seen to date - and like many of us recently… I’ve watched too many 🤕 - and I’m wondering if you’d explain to us exactly what is going on here? It’s exactly the kind of music I’d love to make more of and in deciding on the OP-XY, I’d really appreciate knowing how much of these sounds were generated on OP-XY and whether you’re just recording to tape for warmth? Many thanks
