Generic Game Syndrome, and Why AAA Games Are Always "Declining"

I explain why AAA is declining is not really a fair statement and attempt to bring in nuance into the conversation. Additionally I find what I believe to be the root of this cycle and best explains the cycle of games getting worse before new ones can begin to take their place. The primary focus is on the cause of this cycle but I attempt to give solutions to the root problem as well.

I'm not gonna lie I just picked the oldest article I had come across in my research of the whole topic and used that as the benchmark. Also I haven't played much cod I though original MW2 was supposed to be good? I guess it further proves the idea though

Overwatch is such a good example of both the good and the bad of video games as a whole. It's what makes the players so stuck to it no matter how many mistakes they make, what it used to be. The hope that it will once again become something they can truly enjoy again and that the downward spiral will one day go back up the stairs it fell down, as the teams change and move on going further down the staircase. The attempt to make themselves more open to more people has ruined the original draw to the game, same for so many games out there, all falling down the same staircase. I think gamers are just too close to see the big picture. The friends I play Overwatch with don't know about the controversy. It just a game they play. Most video game players are average Joe's. People like us who watch the you tube videos and know the behind the scenes stuff are in the minority. That's why #gamers spent a decade and a half calling COD the worst game ever, while it simultaneously outsold everything else year by year.

@akaheadlesschicken In a few ways I agree, though this video was targeted at specifically the gamers who are the minority who view games as declining. I mean that's the entire point was to argue that the entire industry wasn't dead.

Only complaint I have for the video is that it’s proven that most successful AAA games make a huge profit with just the game sales, especially now that a lot are $70. Most don’t need micro transactions to make a profit especially in the digital age where distribution costs are extremely lower than they were for physical discs. But great video! How your channel gets bigger and you succeed, love seeing new KZbinrs putting in the effort like you.

The Outlast Trials. Early access came out last year. Checkmate atheists. I think that a lot of shooters have been generic, and that's fine, but after you put in 1000s of hours you get sick of it. The solution is just jumping genres. The horror genre has tons of multiplayer games. As for AAA, the line has been getting blurrier and blurrier since barrier of entry has gone down, and indie companies have become so successful they can barely be considered "indie", and mid-companies take risks and get wild results.

I do agree that other genres and especially will meet that need for uniqueness. But there was a time when AAA FPS games were unique its an era of games I just really miss if I'm honest. A game like Splitgate only lasted for 2 weeks or so that's part of why I think AAA is really important in making sure a game lasts.

The problem isn’t when every game is the same. The problem is when every game FEELS the same. Imagine you’re playing a hack n slash game that’s supposed to be something new. But for some reason it gives Assassin’s Creed vibes…not in terms of mechanics but somehow in gameplay loop?

thats why i got this love/hate relationship with nintendo i feel that is one of the last companies that really cares about bringing something fresh to the table, besides their overpriced products, they really know how to make AAA single player experiences. Yeah I never played any of them. I don't play multiplayer games as I'm not a fan of them myself, I've been playing my older retro games because no further updates needed, as well a manageable length. I think "the decline of gaming" exists in the mind of gamers who follow the game industry as much as they play games. Following games makes you more aware of quote on quote problems and colours your opinions way more than you think. The thing is gamers like that are in the minority. Most gamers are average Joe's who don't share the sentiment. My girlfriend plays Overwatch 2 and doesn't know nor care about cut content or how it shapes up to the original. To her and the group we play with it's just a fun game. And you can see this in the numbers, right. KZbin has spent years calling this game or that game bad or dead or a failure but when you look at the player count or success of the business it's always pretty healthy to super successful.

I put 600 hours into overwatch sense its released on steam (less than a year ago) I clearly still find something fun about it but it just reminds me of what could have been had they not had such a chaotic development cycle
