I just learned what a Mizpah was from this .. I find it crazy in all that Laban has seen he still rejects God's work in all of this.. thanks for the in-depth analysis of the chapter.. this chapter a day series has made the bible more accessible with your explanations of the text.. This is my first time in reading the bible and this series has truly helped me add today's context to these ancient words.. and it's relatable. I purchased my first bible in the summer of 2020 when the world shut down and this series has helped immensly

I have a question for this study. God appeared to Laban and commanded him to say nothing to Jacob, neither good nor bad, but then Laban goes and talks to Jacob anyway and they make a covenant together. It doesn't appear that there was any kind of repercussion for Laban's outright refusal to do as commanded, either. Is something being lost in translation? Or will there be information later in Genesis that explains why this is? Thanks! Truly appreciate these studies. I'm learning so much!

I was also curious about this! Perhaps it was a kind of test for Laban... but as he still (at least currently) views God as the God of Abraham, Nahor, and their father's rather than his own he is unable to truly open his eyes or ears to God's requests?

Hi Erin, although Laban seemed to ignore what God had told him, he did not go through what he actually came there to do. He made it clear to Joseph that he could take back his daughters and grand children and the flocks, and he could have done, he had servants with arms etc. and all the "muscle" behind him to do so. However Laban knew that he could not do this, sound to me that the fear of God Jehovah was with him and he stopped short of going to far. Laban knew that Jehovah was with Jacob and was imparting wisdom and protection on Joseph. Laban saw how Jacob prospered although Laban was using his idol worship and trickery on Jacob, Laban did not get his way completely.
