This song is a technical masterpiece. Virtuoso musicians every member. 11/16 time signiture in the intro and variating signitures throughout. Plus Phil is my favorite drummer hands down, so thumbs up.

just thumbs you up , there are two facts in life, genesis are the greatest band of all time and Raquel Welch is most beautiful woman to ever walk the earth.

7/4 - 7/8 It's easy to count, and that's the time sig the band said it was in. Not sure how you're counting 11/16
@truefilm69912 жыл бұрын
@@WarrenCromartie2 in the intro there is a measure with a crazy time signature. Rick Beato broke it down on his channel. No need to count, just feel it. Yes, it's mostly 7/8 felt as: 2+2+3 in pairs (which is also the easiest for me to feel, probably because I'm a Genesis nut). Chester didn't have Phil's high energy "bite" on drums, but he flows so easily through all the odd time signatures, it's a pleasure to listen to.

Everyone on here is complimenting these guys as great musicians and song writers etc. But I'll bet no one knows that they are true pioneers on a technical side as well. Back around the time of this show, Genesis teamed up with a Dallas based company named Showco, put up 5 million dollars and funded the development of what was called varilights. They were high powered stage lights equipped with motorized dichroic filters allowing the lights to change colors in real time. It was a true game changer for the concert industry and for many years only Genesis could use them as they held the patent. Now days we see many "intelligent" lights that can move and change colors. But it was this band and these people that spear headed the development of such an ingenious innovation. Just thought you'd like to know.

I too saw them in the 70s and 1980, and there was no band that could match them visually. It was something special to say the least.

Phil looks positively manic in this version. His energy was always off the charts. Saw Genesis in 1978 (best concert of my life) and the drum duet stole the show. The crowd cheers as Collins moves to the drums.
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE10 ай бұрын
Absolutely - I think here Phil must have been on copious amounts of cocaine, but it is an amazing performance. The 1978 tour with Bill Bruford I imagine was amazing. I don't take drugs myself, but this is a killer performance.
@rk41gator10 ай бұрын
@@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE Phil has only admitted to smoking pot before a gig, but at this time I think he was hanging with Clapton (before he dried out and went straight). Eric liked his coke, so you might be right. Phil also looks manic at the '80 Lyceum Theater concert. Great show. (the '78 tour was Then There Were Three and Bill had left before that)
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE10 ай бұрын
@@rk41gator As someone who used to smoke cannabis in my teenage years, it definitely doesn't make you wide-eyed and intense, quite the opposite haha! So yes, I think it's like it was "The Clapton Effect". I wish I could have seen bands like this in their prime as you have - I've seen "Focus" live many a time, and Van Leer still has it to this day, and "Frost*", a great modern prog rock band (the frontman singer/keyboardist/composer Jem Godfrey used to write pop hits such as Atomic Kitten's "Whole Again" before going back to his prog influence).
@rk41gator10 ай бұрын
@@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE Good point about the wide-eyed intensity. LOL Though Collins was always intense; or should I say focused. As he grew older he took himself less seriously, but never lost his intensity for the music (which is why his emotion always came through). In concert I was totally unprepared for his on-stage charisma. Captivating!

"On your left, ON YOUR RIGHT! Crosses are green, and crosses are blue-your friends didn't make it through. Out of the fire, AND INTO THE FIGHT! Out of the dark, and into the light-well that's the way the heroes go." That is some of the best singing I've ever heard Phil do. The cool syncopation and the ballsy volume. He KILLS that bit. I mean, he's the stuff all the time, but those lines are badass.

Exactely! I always read people thrashing those two guys, they were BRILLIANT. One might prefere Hackett's style or sound, but I never heard Daryl play something bad or without taste. My absolute favourite song by any version of Genesis. Was fortunate to see them twice with Steve who was to me the difference maker. Phil live was so insecure at the mike during this period he couldn't help his nervous energy antics. Chester was a Zappa drummer, of course he was spot on. Phil met Frank in a hotel lift and mentioned they were going to need a live drummer. Frank gave Phil Chester's number. He flew to London immediately as I believe they only had a week to rehearse.

Looking back from a Tarzan perspective, people forget how edgy Genesis was in the '70s. And even into the '80s Phil was very cool. He had enough confidence to act dorky and pull it off.
