Welcome to the insightful “Ask a Scholar” podcast where we dive deep into profound questions surrounding faith and theology. In this episode, our esteemed panel of experts from AWKNG School of Theology - Karla Adcox, Executive Director; Mike Chu, Academic Director; and Dr. Ronn Johnson, Biblical Scholar engage in a captivating discussion on “Questions on Idols” as they relate to the narratives on the Book of Genesis. Our experts dive into the Old Testament discussing the “opening of the eyes rituals” which Dr. Johnson explained that this ceremony in the ancient world indicates being attentive to something. Mike Chu recommends the book “The Image of God in the Garden of Eden” by Catherine L. McDowell where ancient creation stories define humanity in relation to the gods and where rampant ceremonies and rituals took place in the past.
Dr. Ronn Johnson also recommends The Jewish Study Bible by the Jewish Publication Society, which he requires for his Bible study class. Dr. Ronn Johnson and Mike Chu answered questions related to Jacob how he turned out to be a good person and why Yahweh has continued to bless him. In Dr. Johnson’s course, “The Doctrine of Salvation,” He explains how the ancient reader would have understood the relationships of God, rebellious spirits, and human beings. He moves through the biblical story itself, identifying how familiar terms such as faith, idolatry, righteousness, judgment, and resurrection find expression in the narrative of human salvation. He emphasizes that it was not about Jacob’s behavior but rather which deity he was worshiping. He never gave up on Yahweh despite problems with his behavior. The Book of Genesis discusses humanity and through the narratives, we can learn the hardships and mistakes that they have gone through to become better.
We’re thrilled to invite you to embark on a transformative journey through the pages of scripture with us. Well Done. Loved these answers. I always marveled that God breathed into the nostrils of the formed "dust man." However on most idol ceremonies it was the opening of the mouth that invited the god to inhabit the idol. Nasal breathing is an ancient ritual and also verified by modern science to be superior. Basically you receive the best "breath" through your nose instead of your mouth. "Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." Gen 2:7

Very very interesting about Gen 32 and Hosea 12. The Goldingay translation (The First Testament) used "God" for that being. No hint that this "God" was anything other than what Evangelicals mean by God. I just now ordered the Jewish Study Bible (2nd ed). I really appreciated this discussion. I'm new to Heiser though, through the BibleProject on Divine Council. BUT I didn't really follow through on Heiser until, sadly, he had died from cancer.

“You gotta consider the Jewish Study Bible’s reading.” Yeah, because it’s not like the Jews could ever misinterpret their own scriptures.

The story of Jacob winning a wrestling match against a god seems to be a pretty clear reflection of Christ. The Jews supposedly say that the name Israel is a point of pride because the were victorious over a god, and they will be again in the future. Well, from a certain perspective, they were “victorious” against God when they successfully put him to death on the cross. And just like Jacob did not escape that fight unscathed, neither did Israel escape their fight against Jesus unscathed.
