One of the very best 'mid period' Genesis songs IMO. Written by Hackett & Collins IIRC. Trick and W&W are a pair of superb albums, both released the same year. The band was at the top of its game at that time.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling that Tony Banks (the keyboard player in Genesis) has said that this is his all-time favourite Genesis track. If you want to hear Genesis at their live-best check out 'Seconds Out', double album recorded in Paris over two nights. My favourite album of all time. The musicianship, composition, and playing, is sublime. The album is referred to as 'The Drummer's Bible'. And for good reason. Wow...what a compilation of music.

They do not use an orchestra, the keyboardist Anthony Banks is using an instrument called a Mellotron it is a keyboard instrument that uses actual prerecorded tapes of an orchestra. It is the first analog sampler. A very popular instrument used by all the early 70’s prog bands.

Now I love it all (though Prog is still my fav era). I too have become addicted to Phil Collins. I can not understand it. Maybe it is because he is so down-to-earth authentic and high quality. Now the algorithms have me watching his TV interviews and movies. Nuts!

As for the interviews and movies, just know you're not alone. It's a sickness and I am willingly submitting. I have also followed the path to Mike + The Mechanics (I only recently realized who Mike is), then to Squeeze, which I was crazy about in college. The rabbit hole never ends!

@@schmedrake5429 I can't believe I missed both Genesis and Collins many concerts in the 80s and 90s. Oblivious. So glad we have the videos. You are right, Phil is impossibly flawless. Also, on stage his charisma and energy were so infectious. He really brought the whole audience up on stage with him. When he and Chester did their duet, I thought WTH. Then they mesmerized everyone. Standing ovation. Is there a Philonomomous 12-step program? Mike and the Mechanics have some great tunes. The lyrics to 'The Living Years' must be the best ever written and such a lovely video. It is right up there with Dire Straights' song and video 'Brothers In Arms'! Both powerful with haunting beauty.

It's from their Trick of the Tail album (1976) which is the album preceding Blood on the Rooftops, but don't expect the same kind of song. Oh, and definitely check out another song of theirs called The Musical Box, with the keyboard player helping out on a 12-string acoustic, while the bassist plays an electric archtop 12-string Rickenbacker.

The strings are from the Mellotron. By this time, prog bands were masters at getting good sounds out of the thing (at least in the studio). But IMO this song is an obvious pick for this channel. And yeah, it would be cool to see you cover it (I'm pretty sure the full guitar tab can be found online). If you like this song you should proceed to the next three tracks that close the album: "In that Quiet Earth"/"Unquiet Slumber for the Sleepers", and "Afterglow".
