Los Endos was the closing track on A Trick if the Tail (1976), the first album where Phil sings lead vocals. It includes bits and pieces of the other sings on the album. The first tour with a second drummer so Phil can stand out front and sing, and the only tour with (then) former Yes and King Crimson drummer Bill Brofird on drums. The only player at that point that Phil trusted coukd play his parts. Though mainly known by his 1980s-90s fans as a great pop singer, Phil is one of rock's greatest drummers. This song is one of his showcases. This is actually my favorite Genesis album, despite having no hits the average person knows.

Maybe not the best song to introduce yourself to Genesis with. Los endos was often played in tandem with Dance on a volcano ( they feature on the same studio album, A trick of the tail ) as it incorporates parts of the melody ,as the show finale.

The most important thing to remember about Genesis is that, throughout their LONG career, they had three different distinct eras...the Peter Gabriel era, in which they were some of the pioneers of the entire Progressive Rock genre, the Phil Collins prog era, where Phil became the singer after Gabriel left, and then the "pop" Genesis era after long-time guitarist Steve Hackett left. Songs from that last era you might know would be 'Land of Confusion', 'Tonight, Tonight, Tonight", "No Reply At All", "Mama", etc. This isn't the best introduction to them as this track was the ending track of their A Trick of the Tail album and comprises sections of different tracks in a medley. Makes more sense if you listened to the album start to finish. As for suggestions for songs to get a better idea of their sounds, try Firth of Fifth, Watcher of the Skies, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Supper's Ready (perhaps THE greatest prog rock track ever), The Musical Box, Dance on a Volcano, Eleventh Earl of Mar, and One for the Vine. And those don't even take you past when Hackett departed. It's a DEEP rabbit hole, but suggest you start from the beginning and work your way forward to experience the different sounds/era in chronological order. Cheers, brother, enjoy your reactions.

They were so good live. Just as Mark Farner WAS Grand Funk Railroad, for me, Peter Gabriel WAS Genesis. Phil was always a bit too pop for me. I agree this most definitely isn’t the best song to review first.

EVeryone who said you’d understand Los Endos better if you listened to the album A Trick of The Tail is correct. It kind of brings everything together and wraps the album up. And they often used songs like that in concert to help the audience relive emotions and moods from the concert.

It's the last track on the album it was released on (A Trick of the Tail) and it's really just a medley of the themes of the other tracks on the record, which is why it doesn't sound like it belongs to together most of the time, because it really doesn't, but in context of the album it works better because at that point you would recognize the themes. But going in cold it probably doesn't seem to make much sense.

If you listen to "A Trick of The Tail" from start to finish, this is the last cut, and it's kind of a reprise of the whole album. It's like listening to Pink Floyd's "Great Gig In the Sky" by itself - without the context of the album, or even just that side of the album, it doesn't make any sense.

Los Endos was the last track on the album A Trick of the Tail. It's an instrumental that incorporates themes from many of the other songs on the album. This is a brilliant live performance at the very end of a concert from 1976 (I think), but it would have been wiser to start your Genesis experience with a different tune to give you a better feel for what Genesis was doing in the 1970s. Especially a tune with vocals like Dance on a Volcano, The Cinema Show or The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

This wouldn't have been my choice of introductions. "Follow You, Follow Me" would have been an easier entry. But Genesis, and the members who had solo careers, are VERY much worth exploring. Very diverse. This song is sort of a sampler or a patchwork.

It's a little tough to judge on its own. It is the last song on the album, and the different sections you heard are drawn from the previous songs on the album. So it's like a summation of what came before. I think you would really enjoy several songs from the album itself: Squonk, Ripples, Dance on a Volcano...

This song you just reviewed is the last song on the 1976 album off Trick of the Tale .. it is a hard one for new reviewers as it combines a lot of song influences from the whole Trick of the Tail album. A great way to end the album but in my view works best if you heard the whole album. I suggest start with Try Firth of fifth from Selling England by the Pound 1973 a spectacular song that shows how gifted this band is and go from there. All the best

I think a few good signpost songs to start with would be Firth of Fifth (early days with Gabriel) Dance on a Volcano (early days with Phil) and Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea (80s pivot). They’re not necessarily my favorites but I think they capture different periods of the band well. If you like the intensity of In the Air Tonight, I’d give the album version of Mama a listen.

It's not as well known, except for hard-core Genesis fans (like me) 😊 Much more "listenable", and a little spooky to boot. I'd recommend researching the song to learn the backstory. Thank you so much for doing this. For somebody who is not used to hear strong, twists and turns in a song it could be difficult to connect or even confusing. Me and many others who grew up during this times we got used to it and we wanted it. We wanted surprises when we listen to music. We wanted to be taken for a ride. we usually find this in musicals and progressive rock and jazz rock fusion, and even in classical music and jazz music.

Polo, it might help to put this in the proper context. In the early post-Peter Gabriel years, Los Endos was the set closer. I used to really dread when they’d start playing this song, because it meant that the show was very nearly over and we’d be in our cars soon going home. The beginning of Los Endos to me was the band just burning off some energy and setting up the climax at the end. I wished they would have a longer set list, especially since I don’t believe I ever saw them with an opening act. At least I got to see them perform the entire Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (double LP) plus encore on the tour before this one. This band made some of the most beautiful, passionate, and intense music ever, typically all in the same song. Firth of Fifth (studio version) would be a much better track to get your feet wet. ❤️✌️🔥

Genesis was formed in the late 60's as a UK prog band by a group of rich kids who got together to make the most challenging and artistic music they could produce... Peter Gabriel (vocals) was the original singer w/ Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (guitar/ bass) and Anthony Phillips (guitar)... Genesis debuted in 1969 w/ 'From Genesis to Revelation' ... but it sold poorly. Steve Hackett (guitar) replaced the departing Anthony Phillips and Phil Collins (drums) joined around 1970 and recorded the 3rd Genesis album 'Nursery Cryme'... but few got the band's brand of prog rock. In 1972, Genesis released 'Foxtrot'... and Peter Gabriel started drawing attention by wearing elaborate costumes onstage depicting the fictional characters in Genesis albums. The band started to get good press and built a small, dedicated fanbase by 1973 but still had trouble paying the bills that had racked up... Genesis were in debt after their 1974 album 'The Lamb lies down on Broadway'... and it would be Peter Gabriel's last Genesis album... Peter Gabriel's newborn daughter developed health issues and he couldn't spend time away w/ the band anymore, so he announced he was leaving Genesis in 1975... The press assumed that Genesis was over without their lead singer, but they were just getting started... They wrote a new album 'A trick of the tail' while auditioning new singers for Genesis and drummer Phil Collins sang backup to guide the auditioning singers... but Banks, Rutherford and Hackett noticed that Phil Collins sounded better singing than any of the potential singers... Collins was quite happy as the drummer and couldn't see himself as a lead singer at the time... However, as the list of potential singers ended without anyone picked, Phil Collins gave in and decided to do the vocals for the album 'A trick of the tail'... It surprised Genesis insiders because Phil Collins was a much better singer than Peter Gabriel, and the album actually sold much better than any of the previous Genesis albums in 1976. It sold gold in the UK and gold in the US as well... the band's $400K debt was recouped by the success of the album on both sides of the Atlantic... Because Phil Collins was expected to sing lead live, Genesis hired Yes/ King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford for the tour. 'Wind & wuthering' (1976) was the last album to feature guitarist Steve Hackett, who left the band by 1977... This clip was filmed from the live Genesis album 'Seconds out' released in 1977. Genesis decided to carry on as a trio (Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford) in 1978 w/ the next album aptly titled "And then there were three"... The sound of Genesis also began to change from a technically challenging prog rock band to a more streamlined pop rock band... They had a huge single in '78 - "Follow you, follow me"... as Genesis toured successfully in Europe and America w/ session musicians added onstage. Many older Genesis fans were irritated by the band moving away from their older prog rock and embracing the new pop sound... but the newer songs were drawing numbers and record sales that pushed them into superstar status... After taking a break following his separation & divorce, Phil Collins had penned a bulk of new songs that became his debut solo album 'Face value' in 1981... but his priority was Genesis... and the 1980 album 'Duke' became a platinum success and included some of Collins' songs... 'Abacab' (1981) was a bigger hit selling 2x platinum in the US. Ironically, Phil Collins' solo debut album 'Face value' outsold those 2 Genesis albums combined! Their self-titled 'Genesis' album was released in 1983 and it sold 4x platinum in the US... it scored the hits - "That's all" ... 'Mama' With Phil Collins a superstar by 1985, Genesis released the album 'Invisible touch' in 1986... It became their biggest album selling 6x platinum in the US and had the hits - 'Land of confusion'... 'Throwing it all away' ... 'Invisible touch'. In 1991, Genesis released their last studio record w/ Phil Collins - "We can't dance"... another mega success selling 4x platinum in the US and scoring the hit singles - 'Jesus he knows me' ... 'Hold on my heart' ... 'No son of mine' ... "I can't dance" Phil Collins opted to scale back his touring and musical output in the 90's and decided to amicably part ways w/ Genesis by 1995... Genesis hired new singer Ray Wilson and released 1 album 'Calling all stations' (1997)... but the record was a commercial failure (100K sold in the US) and Genesis quietly parted ways w/ Ray Wilson... They decided to mark Genesis' career in 1999 w/ a best of album 'Turn it on again - the hits' and the band re-recorded their 1974 song 'The carpet crawlers' w/ Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel recording new vocals. Genesis reunited the classic three (Collins, Banks and Rutherford) to tour again in 2007... Genesis opted to do a final tour in 2021/ '22 but Phil Collins had been suffering from a back injury; he was unable to play drums and sang while seated... His son Nic Collins played drums on the tour.

Yep… this is a medley of pieces of several songs from the 1st “Phil Collins is taking over as lead singer now that Peter Gabriel has left” album. This band has a very apparent schism cuz after Peter went solo, Genesis went pop (actually, Gabriel did too!)… and had a long string of hits that took them from an ‘art band’ with worldwide acclaim, to a must-see pop act. Still great - I saw them in 1978 - but not much of the early material played, despite the fact that Collins sound a lot like Gabriel when desired. Then when Collins went solo, Uber-guitarist Steve Hackett did too, and Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks formed Mike and the Mechanics, which had a few big hits, too! They were all just talented!

This was not the tightest version of Los Endos live to be fair. I still like the version here cause it's a little rough and edgy. It was one of the earlier performances and they were still finding their feet with it. You can hear Rutherford struggle to keep the bass tight - but boy did it improve musically on the next couple of tours!

This is them after losing Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins taking over lead vocals. In studio he was the drummer. Live would be others with he taking a seat at the kit for double drums at certain points. It was hard to see but I think it was Bill Bruford of YES and King Crimson here. After this tour in 76, Chester Thompson became their permanent touring drummer. All three of them among the best drummers out there. Some in studio great examples of Phil on drums, Squonk of this album, Down And Out from, And Then There Were Three, and Behind The Lines, 1st song from the Duke Suite

Agree with others in that I wish you had a chance to hear some other Genesis songs for your first reaction. Make sure to listen to “Man on the Corner” “Hold on my heart” “Land of Confusion”. One of their last albums has the song “No son of mine” which is super powerful. Also “Jesus He Knows Me.” The song “ I Can’t Dance” was also one of my favorites. Glad to see new generations getting a chance to hear some great bands if the past!

Genesis is my #1 band. Such a diverse catalog. People who love the Phil era usually also love the Peter era. However, most diehard fans of the Peter era despise the Phil era, or at least everything post-Hackett (78 onward). That’s when they started having hit singles. They became hugely popular in the 80s, simultaneous with Phil’s own commercial success as a solo artist. Phil was everywhere in the 80s.

Honestly this is one of those you gotta listen to the whole album with cus from beginning to end it’s a full masterpiece 👌🏼❤ a lot of the songs transition into the next one to where it’s almost better to listen to more than one back to back w/o pause.

You really would have to listen to the entire A Trick of the Tail album for this song to make complete sense, since it incorporates small bits of some of the other songs on that album; kind of wrapping it all up and sending the album on it's way as a finale, hence the title Los Endos. This was the first studio album put out by the band after the departure of original lead singer Peter Gabriel, and the remaining members wanted to show they could still produce great music, since Tony Banks, keyboards, and Michael Rutherford, bass and guitars, were the main music composers.

As a Genesis fan from the early days, I actually think your spot on. If I'd heard ot for the first time, I'd absolutely agree. Having heard this too many times to count, I get the chaos before the connection. Thanks for giving me a new way to look at something I took for granted. You nailed it.

I listen to this song as well as Squonk on this same 1976 Trick of the Tail album and there is a descending keyboard note section repeated that sounds so very like the La La La La La La La La of The Delfonics "La-La Means I Love You" song from 1968. The La La Means I Love You song is the earliest song I remember... being only 3 -4 years old at the time. BTW, Trick of the Tail is my favorite Genesis album only listening to it for the first time in ~1982. Back then I knew there was this familiarity with the couple songs on the album to something I had heard years earlier. It would be another couple decades until I figured it out.

This track is a Finale of the album "A Trick of the Tail". It is a combination of themes explored in the previous tracks. As with a lot of Prog Rock, it is ideally played as a total album with the tracks in order.

Los Endos is basically an overture, like from musical theater, which features snippets of the various tunes featured on the LP (A Trick of the Tail), the 1st album which featured Phil Collins on lead vocals. The section you enjoyed was from the song "Squonk". You should react to that one and "Dance on a Volcano".

An Overture is music that opens a play, movie or classical music. Los Endos was a REPRISE of themes in Volcano and Squonk.

My favorite Genesis music is a sequence of 3 songs that run together without any break in the music that closes out their greatest album without Peter Gabriel titled Wind And Wuthering. The song titles are Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers... , ...In That Quiet Earth, and Afterglow. They all are meant to be played in one listen.

Bill Bruford is one of my favorite drummers, but one of the reasons that he and Genesis parted ways after this tour is that Bruford is more used to having the freedom to improvise and Genesis needed a drummer who was willing to play what Phil would normally play. I'm guessing that's part of the reason why the beginning part of the song sounds so chaotic. Also: Collins was not a primary writer in Genesis at this stage, but he is most responsible for the beginning section of 'Los Endos.' Collins was really into jazz fusion at the time. The closing sections, however, are more typical of what one gets from Genesis.
