At the time I first heard this, I was a young guy, around 14. I'd only recently discovered that there was actually music for ME, not just my parents' music. I'd heard some Deep Purple, Hendrix, stuff like that. Then I heard this. Wow! Hard to convey the effect it had, and still has. Subsequently, I followed Genesis through the golden period. But how let down I felt when they morphed into what they later became. But this earlier music, through The Lamb and so on, all the way through to round about Seconds Out, great stuff. Majestic and pure.

"Nursery Cryme" is a masterpiece. These five genius at the peak of their creativeness. Most probably they were in their mid twenties. "Immune to all our Herbicidal batterings" or "photosynthesize their venom"- if some other band put these words in their songs, it would have come out as garbage. The last two and half minutes were pure majestic, the beginning of opera rock, I presume. Hackett and Banks were dangerous- they were invincible. Same goes for Rutherford, Collins and Gabriel. " The return of the Giant Hogweed", The Musical Box", Harold The Barrel" and all the other songs are pure class. Find me another PR album of that era that can be comparable to this one musically, lyrically and vocally.

I love the album Nursery Cryme from 1971, also Wind and Wuthering from 1977. One for the vine is another fine masterpiece that stands the test of time. I could listen to that tracks all day. @@bassterminator3608 That's true. Most rock songs are about Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica. You got the name right. On the actual song, Peter Gabriel says "Heracleum Montegazziani."
Do you like Peter Gabriel? I've been a big Genesis fan right up until the release of their 1980 album, Duke. After that, I really don't understand any of their work. Too simple, too commercial. It was on Nursery Cryme where Peter Gabriel’s presence became more apparent. I think Selling England By the Pound was the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic anthem of the British people. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Gabriel, Banks, Collins, Hackett and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to The Battle of Epping Forest. In this song, Peter Gabriel addresses the problems of violence, abuse of power, decadence and leaders uncaring of their people. I Know What I Like, is the most moving pop song of the 1970s, about contented lack of ambition. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I’ve heard in rock. Peter Gabriel’s solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like Sledgehammer and Steam. But I also think Peter Gabriel works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Return Of the Giant Hogweed, a great, great song, a personal favourite.
@MusicVersa4 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why a certain segment of the fan base feels the need to constantly disparage the trio era of Genesis. They grew and changed as songwriters and musicians, and that's a good thing. Their music was always interesting, and complex, but the ways in which it was interesting and complex changed. It's just as difficult to write a great pop song as it is to write a great prog song. Genesis *always* balanced pop and prog - albums from the Gabriel era are filled with pop hooks, and albums from the Collins era are filled with complicated instrumental passages. But the balance changed over time, and that's fine. You're not obliged to like (or dislike) Invisible Touch or We Can't Dance, but I wish certain fans would give this tired "the Gabriel Era is the only good era" nonsense a rest. Please.
