Hi sir, I was wondering if you could clarify the MAOA gene as I am confused what causes aggression. There are sites saying high levels of serotonin causes aggression and others are saying low levels of serotonin causes aggression, is it both? There has been a 16 marker about the biological explanations of aggression and the AQA mark scheme says faulty MAOA gene leading to higher than usual levels of serotonin, but it also says the role of serotonin in inhibiting amygdala activity - low levels of serotonin linked to aggression.

I just searched it up and both high and low levels of serotonin affect aggression. I think it's kinda like the dopamine Hypothesis where both affect behaviour. High levels aren't really known as to why they affect aggression but it does increase because of the low MAOA gene and therefore low MAOA enzyme.

@@dreamy4800 Yeah, after researching for literally an hour, I’ve come to the conclusion that if it comes up in the exam I’m just gonna mention that both can cause aggression. Thanks!

I think the high levels of serotonin causes desensitisation of serotonin - but this happens usually within utero

Although there is higher levels of serotonin left in the brain, surely MAOA-L reduced production of the serotonin as there’s more left in the synaptic cleft that needs to be broke down.

Intimate partner violence. Sorry surprised I didn't make that clear in the video, bit of an oversight.

@@PsychBoost No problem, I managed to figure it out by zooming in on the video and read the original study's title. Thanks for replying though.
