Actually I read journalarticles on this indicating that skin-cancer is actually more common among dark skinned people. I just happens to be that they aren't diagnosed that open, since they less frequently go for health checks among other factors.

Very difficult to generalise on who the Boers are. My family are French Huguenots landing in the Cape over 400 years ago as a result of the Edict of Nantes. Others have Dutch Ancestors arising from the Dutch East India company and so we can go on with a long list of the origins of Boers.

Prior to the 'Dromedaris' ship of Jan van Riebeck there were ships ship wrecked on the coast of what is now Cape Town. The very beginning of the Afrikaans language was an attempt to communicate between Germanic sailors and some Portuguese sailors and indigenous khoikhoi populations. Some European sailors shipwrecked remained and intermixed with the khoikhoi (Outeniqua, Gonaqua and Gririqua). This is very well explained in researching the development of the Afrikaans language. After van Riebeck's time the mixed race descendants further mixed with other employees of the VOC, Hugenots(Christians escaping persecution in France), Malays, Indians, Malagasys, etc...

My Afrikaner family descends from lines that never left the Western Cape since the second half of the 1600's. Our DNA breakdown reflects over 60% Western European (in my case I got a large chunk from the French Huguenot's, and also Prussian & Dutch genes), 20%+ Eurasian (still to be fine-tuned), 4% Black East African (yup, we're Africans!) and the rest scattered across South Asia as far as Polynesia, so loosely termed Cape Malay descent. I've actually read from larger studies that the overall dominant gene among Afrikaners is Prussian/German (that explains the penchant for punctuality, discipline, stubbornness & our work ethic.) The Dutch were a fairly small group at the Cape, bureaucrats representing the government of the Netherlands who for the most part went home after deployment (they sowed their oats here, of course). Many more immigrants were Prussian and German - many immigrating after the Prussian wars - but the Cape-Dutch rulers actively supressed all things German and to a large extent wrote them out of history. They banned the German language, their schools, holidays, the Lutheran church, and even changed their names: Heinrich summarily became Hendrik, for instance. They tried the same with the Huguenot's (Cronier became Cronje, Rousseau became Rossouw, etc), but many of the French moved away from the Cape and settled in Franschhoek where they managed to largely keep their names intact, customs alive and left their stamp on our Winelands. By the early 1700's the Dutch rulers were resented by the locals, and a young man name Bibault actually defied a Dutch judge in Stellenbosch when he was brought to court in 1707 for speeding (on his horse) by shouting "Ik ben een Afrikaner!"...ergo: you have no say here, Dutchman. There is a stone planted where it happened. And so, the nation was born...from various & mixed ethnicities and races.

The shortage of women is overstated. In the early cape (1657-1688) the ratio of European born men to women was 100:79 which is nowhere near as bad as it is made out to be (with the other 19 being those born to the initial settlers, one of those 100 women was a slave). Later (1688-1717) it was more unequal (313:201) but there were still women of European descent (who had been born in the previous generation), 164 to be specific, which made up the majority of the difference.
