Manuel was a freaking idiot. Most of the people on the ship survived. Some die before they reach the friendly tribes that spoke Portuguese and instead of staying with them, he chooses to leave and many more die. Then they find a dangerous tribe that kills nearly all the remaining survivors. And his wife starves herself to death. I mean seriously, how do you have 500 survivors and lead them to their deaths because you thought you knew where you were going? He found a tribe that understood them and offered to let them stay and become part of the tribe until they would be rescued. But he didn't listen. They had food and water, which he and all the survivors desperately needed. A lot of them still would have died on the extremely long journey, but probably more than half would have survived and been rescued. Instead, 25 survived. Good thing he went crazy and walked off into the desert and died. He didn't deserve to be a survivor.

Idea for next video: In the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars, thousands of french prisoners populated jails across europe. In Spain, many were taken after the raise of the revolution against French occupation. The Balearic Islands (where I am from), are a famous touristic destination, but it is less well know that near the south of Mallorca, there is an unpopulated island called Cabrera. This island today nestles only one police station and it remains inhabited as it always has been. It is a one-day trip touristic destination. Back in 1810, it was deserted and isolated from the world. It was the chosen destination to strand 9000 french prisoners for years to come. Story tells, one ship would come with food and provisions once every 2 or 3 months. Until one day it stopped coming. Given the island offers absolutely no food, water or shelter, the french prisoners were left with 2 choices. Some decided to swim the 62km distance between Mallorca and Cabrera. Remember, this is 1810, Mallorca was not the island it is today. The population of sharks was huge, Great White sharks were local residents of the sea coasts until tourism, urban development and increased maritime traffic made them relocate elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Strong currents could easily drag you straight into the middle of the Mediterranean. The ones who stayed however, resorted to cannibalism. I can´t think about a better story to tell in this channel, and it would make me specially happy to know about it, as it is a part of the history of the Balearic Islands, my home. I leave an article explaning the story ¨www.napoleon-series.org/reviews/military/c_denis.html

The logs of the São João clearly mention that the Bantu tribes they met in 1552 had been in the region for several generations - thus destroying the Apartheid regime's claims that whites had a 181 year lead and therefore a superior claim to the land.

It’s a stunning setting with the boom of the surf ever present and white breakers backed by the blue immensity of the Indian Ocean. There are migrating whales visible in winter and in the foreground, groups of ilala palms and dense coastal Natal forest hosting troops of vervet monkeys and bushbuck. On their way up the coast to Mozambique, its likely that the survivors of the wreck passed through the estate that my house is located in and beautiful as it is today, I imagine how difficult it must have been then with no roads, no civilization, and bush that is just about impenetrable once you leave the beach.

Yeah, that'd be great if the had any seeds for crops. At the time, Africa didn't really have grain or vegetables and was largely unsettled vast wilderness. The soil is rich but what the fuck were you gonna plant when you don't know if half the shit around is even edible and no one wants to eat Bushes and roots forever.

The Zulus pulled the same trick with the boers. There was a negotiation reached as to what they were giving and taking, the agreement was that it would be delivered to the king by the leader of the boers and some of his top men but on the condition that no weapons were taken into the compound. When everyone was seated the Zulus kicked up their burried spears from the sand and killed every boer in the compound.

The east coast of Africa isn't exactly what I'd call desolate. At the time, the place was teeming with wildlife, and seeing that they had muskets, hunting would've been dead easy. They were travelling through an area now known as KwaZulu Natal, which has numerous streams and rivers flowing throughout the year. How thirst and hunger could've been an issue is a mystery to me.
