I don't think so. I think the registers in the UG are at 6 and 9, not 12 and 6. Also I think UG would have branded the dial.

That's a good question. I don't know. It was sponsored by sgah.org but they don't seem to update their website so it's not clear if it's an annual event or if they just do it from time-to-time. I did publish a video recently about a guide to watch fairs in Switzerland. You can check that out for ordering instructions to order a printed guide, but my recollection is that this one was not listed in that guide.

I'm curious, this might sound naive, but if buying there, in Switzerland, are you guaranteed that everything is authentic? No painted dials, correct hands, etc? Or like all people everywhere else in the world, are there still likely to be some shenanigans going on like in any market?
@freepirate4470

Speaking strictly of the events like this, flea markets, swap meets, etc.
@IMakeWatches
@IMakeWatches 17 күн бұрын
@@freepirate4470 I would say the shenanigans in Switzerland are very very low compared to, for example, Ebay. I've now had perfect buying experiences on over 100 watches in Switzerland. But I mostly buy very inexpensive watches (under US$100, with a few up to $500 and even fewer up to $1500).

always a joy to watch your videos but it hurts me to read, better for scrap metal...it is all about the money,...some of our members were at the auctions for the high end stuff we were at the Rikketik in the Netherlands it was crazy....., there was a great atmosphere, it was very busy with over 350 boots with watches and clocks, parts and accessoires....I herad there were over 2700 visitors...a 15 min walk to get some parking space but it was fun all day
@IMakeWatches
@IMakeWatches 2 ай бұрын
Yes, I think the scrap metal thing is very short sighted. Gold holds its value in any form, including watch cases. I think dealers should make more of an effort to document the weight of the case and bracelet and inform the customer that if they pay just for the value of the gold they can get a free vintage movement and dial! Why melt it down into an ingot for a bank to hold? It makes no sense to me!

I told her partner the same thing a month ago at the Coppet Christmas Market. Specifically I told him that I thought that it is unique enough that it could go much higher to someone that was looking for it. However, one of the issues with it is it is based on a one jewel Baumgartner 582 movement, so although it is novel, it's not exactly a high quality watch. In any case they still had it a month ago and their contact details are at 6:32 if you want it!

One of those braille watches was the start of my downfall in 1984. Buying that watch has lead to 40 years of collecting watches keeping me broke for a lifetime!!
@IMakeWatches
@IMakeWatches Ай бұрын
Ha! I have a braille watch too. An Arsamatic with, I think, an ETA 2742 (in any case it's an ETA automatic). I haven't opened it yet but I'm curious to look at the cannon pinion and seconds arbor. Since it's an ETA even though it no longer has a seconds hand I can easily replace it back to a normal set of hands and dial. I just have to find some other reason for the pop-open crystal. Perhaps a skeletonized ETA 2841 with no dial at all would be fun to put in that case. Pop it open and you're looking right into the heart of the movement!

@IMakeWatches
@IMakeWatches 7 күн бұрын
It really depends. There's a lot of price competition from auction websites that tend to sell a lot of junk and push prices down, but you can't beat watch fairs in terms of seeing hundreds or even thousands of choices within a few hours, and you can always name a price you're willing to pay and see what they say. All of these sellers know the market prices of everything. You can't blame them for asking a bit more for their efforts and time sourcing, cleaning, checking and often times servicing them.

That place is a real rabbit hole, you could lose yourself in there.There's a lot of good stuff there. You could easily spend $50,000 just on the watches you really really liked and still make nice money. Even the parts like cases, straps, movements are very impressive. But you have to know your stuff and hopefully get a bit of luck

Watches for gold is getting a bit of a thing theses days more and more are doing it , the pawn broker near me has done it for years some good old watches, last year he smashed a gold patek just for the gold .
@IMakeWatches
@IMakeWatches 2 ай бұрын
It's very short sighted in my opinion. The problem seems to be that matching a vintage watch with a buyer is much more difficult than handing it to a scrap metal dealer and having them hand you cash. I say if you can afford it keep the watches and only sell them for scrap if you're going broke, because both gold and vintage watches only go up in value, and for the right buyer the watch will always be worth more than the gold value.

@JamesIdentity
@JamesIdentity 17 күн бұрын
@@IMakeWatches I like some vintage pieces, just prefer NOS or only slighly worn.
@IMakeWatches
@IMakeWatches 13 күн бұрын
@@JamesIdentity I used to be solidly in that camp but I've come around to seeing it as being largely a byproduct of the auction houses hyping "untouched condition" watches as being worth 10 x their market value even though they may come from runs of thousands or tens of thousands of identical watches: in other words, faux-rarity based on "condition, condition, condition." So let's say you do buy a vintage Rolex Daytona in mint condition for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Then what? My next purchase would be an identical one that's beat up for a fraction of the price so that I can actually wear it. So then you find yourself actually enjoying the beat up one and worrying about the past and future market value of the mint condition one that you can't enjoy, which is contingent upon the hype cycles of a market that you then feel obliged to follow as a responsible investor. The truth is I don't do that with expensive watches because I have never bought expensive watches in any condition, let alone mint, but I understand the problem because I ran into the same problem with mint condition inexpensive watches. I invariably end up loving the watches that I can wear more than the ones that I can't, even if I only paid a few dollars for them. One more important aspect of that is that many very nice condition watches on the market today, expensive or not, didn't look that way when the seller bought them. When looking at junk in the flea market it's important to look at them from the perspective of how they will look with a simple case cleaning and a new crystal.
