@llliiimmmeee The computer was restored to functionality by moving a pin with some tweezers. The 'scam' is not directly related to that guy at the beginning who was telling the reporter they would need to replace $1100 worth of components, he's only doing what the company has hired and trained him to do. The 'scam' lies with the company itself purposefully making it harder for people to repair their devices so that they have no other option than to go to company owned stores where the employees have been trained to charge them exorbitant prices without checking for common issues that might arise with their devices.

@Doctor President Right to repair has nothing to do with switching your phone every year. Quite the opposite. It's about being able to repair your phone so when something does fail, you can keep it 5 or 6 or even 7 years because you can fix it yourself with aftermarket parts. Instead of going to apple after two years and them saying, "Your phone is two years old. We can't fix it. You have to get a new phone now." Then they don't have the money to sue the insurance company and end up bankrupt losing their houses. As much as I hate Apple, you gotta understand that the guy from Apple explicitly stated at the beginning of this that Apple does not do partial repairs, which is what the guy Louis did. They only have solutions that involve replacing entire parts, and their OEM parts happen to be prohibitively expensive. It's not fraud nor is it illegal because they are extremely up front about this policy when you bring them a device, and it is little different than taking your car to the dealership for repairs. It was legit like the first thing out the guy's mouth, and when CBC asked for an alternative, he didn't lie and say that it couldn't be done for cheaper, only that they had no cheaper solutions.

This piece starts off, and you think ‘okay, this likely to be a genuine piece of journalism’. Then Louis Rossmans face pops up. (In case anyone doesn’t know, this man seemingly has a lifelong hatred and professional resentment of everything Apple). It’s sealed, when he claims that 20 or 30 times every single day someone comes into his store claiming they’ve been overcharged at the Genius Bar. In this item there also some very dubious and curious things: First of all, how did that one pin get bent out of shape? Could small insect have burrowed its way into the MacBook? It’s true the Apple Store have actually misdiagnosed this problem. But the fact that the indicators have been turned red, and a small section has clearly been sabotaged by someone that has messed around in a lot of Apple products- it could very likely be a setup. Something they are LIKELY to misdiagnose, on a busy day, without actually pulling the machine apart. Most importantly, reporters put this piece together, Terrence McKenna, - look VERY accurately at your sources. And tell the whole story: consider for example how good the Apple customer service and replacement program usually is. And the likely reason that Apple increasingly don’t want people messing inside their products, is that some of these dudes cause them all kinds of problems and added repair costs, especially if things are still under free warranty that they offer.

@@nessiebreath Pin could get out of shape during assembly in factory. If pin is bended it can still make a contact, question is for how long when oxidation and thermal changes start to do it's job.
@andysmith19966 жыл бұрын
+nessiebreath Yes, the news team probably had a tech make a minor but obvious fault so that they could assess the service provided by Apple and a third party. That's common practice by consumer organisations when comparing repair services. And Apple did open the machine: they had to, to see the indicators that had turned red, which, as was noted, do not necessarily indicate that liquid was spilt in the machine. Your suggestion that "these dudes cause them all kinds of problems and added repair costs" makes no sense. If the product is under warranty or Apple care, then you'd just have Apple fix it. No one would pay to have a third party fix their machine if Apple will do it for free, especially since that would also void their warranty. And, if the item is out of warranty, it should be the owner's choice who they take it to. If a third party screws it up, that doesn't cause Apple any problems or added repair costs. Oh, and Louis Rossman didn't say that between 20 and 30 people a day came in who were overcharged by Apple's genius bar; he said that between 10 and 30 people a day came in with equipment that Apple said couldn't be fixed or was too expensive to fix. Given he has a very good reputation for fixing Apple gear and he's in New York, I don't find that unbelievable.

I repeated "so essentially you're doing the same job, but it will be $700 rather than $335? And the answer was "Yes". I took it elsewhere. Found a local tech guy with a simple google search and it was done in 1 hour for $50. All he needed to do, he said, was clean it up a bit, put a new cable into it, and it was fine. My iPhone developed a fault at 18 months old. I live in Scotland (part of EU). Under EU law - if the item has not lasted longer than one would reasonably expect (especially expensive items) the selling agent must offer a free repair or replacement. After everyone telling me Apple would not replace as the 1 year warranty had expired, I took the faulty phone yo the Apple store in Glasgow. As expected they wanted £100 for a 'repaired' replacement. I had come prepared with quotes from the 'Sale of Goods Act' in UK. They then reduced the cost of the replacement to £80. I refused and asked for the manager's name as I would take him to the small claims court because he was breaking the law. I was given a free replacement. Do research - stick to your guns!!!

Congrats on hitting the big league, Louis. CBC news is a big and very reputable media source here in Canada. What galls me most about Apple is the way they deal with warranties. They take a phone that 'can't be fixed', replace it with a refurbished phone, then send the defective phone in to be fixed. After fixing it, they put it into the refurbished pool, sending an 'unfixable' fixed phone to a different customer. Those customers know nothing about the history of their 'new' refurbished phone. In the auto industry, if a vehicle is written off, by law thereafter it can only be resold with open disclosure to the new customer.

You're mistaken about the auto thing. Go watch Steve Lehto, who is an auto lemon law attorney. Some states don't have "mfg buyback" branding on titles of lemon vehicles. In those that do, the manufacturer often runs that car through an auction in a state that doesn't which "cleans the title". Often the only way to tell is through a title history, in the manufacturer is listed at any point after the original sale. This may or may not even show up on a title search like carfax, as those services miss things because state systems don't always talk to each other. Please stop spreading wrong info. Become an educated consumer.

Fraud is literally what the definition of rip-off is...
@Ghostlogicz6 жыл бұрын
Nah still ripping them off not fraud, there's a difference in how they plan to fix it . The Genius Bar isn't trained to actually repair issues they are giving base prices for issues like 200 a screen or 500 for other on a phone. They then put in for replacement or replace the parts . Plug and play is how most of them are taught not to diagnose what the issue is. For the MacBook example they likely planned to replace the whole board or screen assembly to fix it when all it needed was a wire cause that's how they are taught. *Fraud would be saying your car needs a new alternator and engine when just the alternator and you know that. *Ineptitude would saying it needs the alternator and engine cause your a fuckup. *A ripoff would be overpriced repair which is this case . Per the analogy the engine needs a screw replaced that was loose and instead of trying to figure out the exact issue they write the engine off and bill you for it billing you more than usual cause they are a premium service. They arnt doing the repair wrong or lying about it they are just taught to replace the broken chunk.

@bdhale346 жыл бұрын
The sad part about the situation is third party repair is perfectly legal and there's no real legal ground whatsoever for Apple to stand on to eliminate anyone who does it but money greases palms and lawyers are judges can often be bought because a great deal of lawyers are deceitful, dishonest and manipulative and the majority of judges are former lawyers so chances are good most of them are also or at least still have the capability of being that way.

JJ B You misunderstand. Right to repair is not calling for the government to merely “get involved in private practices.” Rather, it is these giant corporations that are threatening and imposing themselves onto smaller, private businesses (like Louis’). The government is needed to *defend* right to repair. I might agree with you if it were just Apple, but it’s not. There are many, many more. For reference, the iPhone 7 was given a repairability score of 7 by iFixit. The Galaxy S8 got a 4. I’m not trying to hate on Samsung but to point out that there are MANY culprits.

Louis, I'm so dumb I went to the Genius Bar this past year to get a single key replaced on my MacBook (some dust got stuck under it probably and one of the securing pins popped). I have had zero experience repairing electronics. Guy told me it'd be about $500 or so for the fix. Stupid me I went out and bought another MacBook instead (it was for the kids' school) only to stumble across some repair sites to see I could do the fix myself for, on the high end, $10. Embarrassing, sure. But Apple is borderline criminal with not telling me that I could just consider a DIY fix. @JubJubtheWonderHippo6 жыл бұрын
@W4sabiNinja That sounds like a different thing though. That's over the matter of warranty, and whether consumers are allowed to open their devices or have others open them for repairs, iirc. The right to repair thing is about things like repair manuals, schematics, and accessibility to parts and tools for either consumers or third party repair shops. It doesn't do much good to be able to open up the device if there are screws you can't unscrew, or everything's intentionally obscured for the sake of forcing consumers into official expensive repairs with whatever extra service the company wants to tack on, like those water sensors in the video which could have just been turned by being in a humid room.
