I have been using floating braces for years. The brace in the video could be improved on by using a longer diagonal and setting it lower on the upright post. The way this brace is built the end post may jack up out of the ground. This is a particularly big issue if the post holes were dug and posts not driven. Floating braces work great for sheep fences that are not too high. They save on the expense and labor of another post. I like that electric cattle guard.

Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate your suggestion for improving the brace in the video. It's always great to hear from someone with experience using floating braces.

One issue with floating braces is that the end of the brace rail can sometimes start to move laterally. Having a level solid base that won't move like a concrete paver block dug into the ground reduces this problem. Also pounding in a stake on the opposite side of the brace rail from the fence wire will help to hold it in place. If the post does start to jack up out of the ground, loosen the fence wire, then loosen the wire across the bottom of the brace before pounding the post back down, then retighten brace wire and fence wire last.@@RussWilson

I use the angled brace posts but instead of the 'master joinery' required for the mortise and tenon joint I cut a notch in the upright post and angle on the leaner. To hold them together I drill and drive a spike or steel rod on an angle through the post and into the brace. On the ground there are enough flat rocks that I am usually able to find one to go under the angle brace on the ground. I have a bunch of steel electric fence post that I picked up cheaply at an auction and I cut them to the appropriate length for the rod. I like an H brace but agree that it is sometimes a challenge to get any post in the ground - never mind two.

Jim Gerri’s is who I learned how to do the floating brace, like you described.

I've always heard those called floating braces, that's how all of my interior fences with three strand of high-tensile are set up. That polywire gate is genius, I have to try that at the end of my driveway. It might finally keep my beagle home. Lol

I really like how those braces are setup. I'm going to put one at the end of my driveway to keep my dogs home. Thanks for watching!!

I like how those are at the end of the driveway. I might try something like that since we have a dog park on the other side of the road. All my older dogs are broke to hot wire. I’m working on my LGD puppy though. He’s getting there or should I say trying to keep him as a LGD. My kids and wife enjoy him so much. He is so well behaved.

My neighbor does that to keep his cattle in, using two more wires for a total of 5 all together. The springs are what keeps the wire taught and off the ground. His is durable enough to stand up to several semi deliveries for his chicken houses every month.

I hate getting shocked, my son on the other hand doesn't mind it at all. He walks up and grabs the fence when he checks to see if its working. My brother had a similar incident with a flying squirrel, it got inside his jacket. He was asking me for help but I was laughing so hard I wasn't much good to him.

It's hard for me to see and I didn't hear if it was said; how high off of the driveway surface is the wire floating?
@RussWilson2 жыл бұрын
It's about 3-4 inches off the driveway. It really works well. Thanks for watching!!

Hey Russ! If that crossing was wider, further off of the ground, and had maybe 2-3 more wires on it do you think it would work for sheep?
@RussWilson2 жыл бұрын
I think it would. It would be wroth a try.

It's incredible how many words you have to mispronounce to speak Pennsylvania English. I haven't heard it spoken so fluently in 30+ years.
