Genius Idea? Making Push Button Pop Up Bench Dogs

Lee Valley sells a similar item under that name. But John's approach looks a lot less expensive unless you only want one or two.

Prairie Dogs also refer to bowel movements that are coming before you can get to the bathroom to relieve yourself...

@@mr.robinson1982 A bowel movement is the event of moving one's bowels. That phrase refers to the _act_, not to the product. If you are too polite to say "poop" (but not polite enough to simply avoid the subject) try "feces" or "excrement"

435 I've just started cutting and I hit this problem. I had no idea how to handle this situation. I tried to push forward, decided it was too dangerous, and just abandoned the cut. I wish more woodworkers showed us novices how to handle the bad situations instead of editing out the imperfections. Like it or not, you internet guys are our teachers. We don't have anyone else. So thank you for that very important teaching moment. You've just made me more effective and MUCH safer.

I always get nervous when I see somebody using a table saw without a riving knife. And those hands seemed to be dangerously close to that router bit.

@@diether2423 being nervous is not the same thing as being in danger. I learned that a long time ago. You just have to know what you are doing.

@@lxoxrxexnx well, in this case there was no reason not to use a riving knife. So for sure it could've been done in a safer way.

@@diether2423 if I accuratedy recall how the video went, I saw no blood or bits of flesh go flying so that's as safe as it gets. John has made numerous comments in the past about his knowledge of safety and good practices. The main thing is not the tools but one's attitude and thoughtfulness that you bring to bear when using tools. If you know anything about John you will know that he has been making his living doing this stuff for about 40 years and still has all his fingers intact. I understand the unease that you are feeling. My saw still scares me everytime I use it even after my 40 years of using it. That's what keeps my fingers still attached to my hand despite also not using a riving knife. I have been hurt by tools; but they all have been hand tools and because I did not fear them enough or had been inattentive while using them. Still, we all have our ways and you can and should use whatever way you wish to keep your blood from leaking out.

@@lxoxrxexnx Safe means low risk, not accident-free. I agree about the danger of hand tools. I just sliced my finger nicely with a bow saw blade, that a few minutes ago I had resting on my shoulder near my carotid. The older I get, the fumblier.

Excited for you. Very cool, and that's a beautiful workbench! I made pop-up dogs for my previous workbench using parts from magnetic push latches -- push once and it pops up, push again and it stays down. I wish I could say I came up with the idea myself, but I got it from some KZbinr whose name I've forgotten.

Those are very cool and yet very practical too. Of all the take-aways from this video, I think it was the sureness of that stop block you put on the drill-jig. It just looked so solid unlike some of those threaded beasties you get on many saws, drill presses etc! Any spalted wood is a beautiful accent to small wood working projects. I used spalted oak to make a cantilevered 2-tier box for my multimeter, which I really enjoy looking at.
