The Octopus In My House
A professor develops an extraordinary relationship with an octopus when he invites it to live in his home. The octopus, called Heidi, unravels puzzles, recognises individual humans and even watches TV with the family. The episode also shows remarkable behaviour from around the world - from the day octopus, which can change colour and texture in a split second, to the coconut octopus, which carries around its own coconut shell to hide in. But most fascinating of all is seeing how Professor David Scheel and his daughter Laurel bond with an animal that has nine brains, three hearts and blue blood running through its veins.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

She's such a delight! I'll never understand why some people seem to think that animals, even aquatics, don't have personalities. She's such a clever little thing! Figuring out the lever to summon you at all hours... I giggled out loud, it's such a bratty little thing to do, like a toddler calling for your attention in the middle of the night. My own aquatic (an axolotl) isn't doing too hot at the moment, so it was really nice to watch her play and be happy!

I believe every animal have their own personality. I have a betta fish that was at first aggressive and flared his fins a lot when I went near him. But now I think he kinda got used to my face. I noticed that whenever I go near the tank he will stop looking at whatever he’s interested in and go to the front of the tank. No flaring though. He just comes up to the front and swim around. His tank mates (tetras) would just swim around normally but when I turn on the light they would frantically swim around at the front of the tank, I think they know it’s food time coz that’s when I usually start to feed them (when I turn the light on)
@Elena-ly9my
@Elena-ly9my 2 жыл бұрын
@@beaysabelle02 Oh for sure I agree! My betta passed just a couple months ago, and I miss him tons. He was really mellow for a betta! I almost never saw him flare, and could put just about any type of tankmate in him, and just about any type of object around the tank. The only times I ever saw him get upset was when he saw himself reflected in the tank glass! Clearly, he knew who the prettiest boy in the room was, lol. My axolotl (he just passed this morning, and I'm already missing him like crazy) was very affectionate. He'd always see me petting the cat and come press against the glass so I could "pet" him too! Always the first to come out and see me when I got home. My petsitters always said that when I was away he'd get really quiet and hide more. I know it's always seemed a little weird, but I loved getting to know the personalities of my little aquatic friends! Getting to spend the time we had together was super precious to me.

@@Elena-ly9my I know how it feels like to lose a pet - even aquatic ones. I had a first betta before I have my current one, and he was the goodest boy of all. He helped me not go crazy during the pandemic xD he always seek for attention even from my pleco (Wasabi XD) who seem to not care about his tankmates. He had a bright red coloration. He was my first betta and until now I still miss him sometimes :( His name was Sushi. Now my current one (his name is Sashimi) was the aggressive one, but now the needy (for attention). It's incredible how their personalities would develop overtime once they get familiar with you. I'm sorry for your loss... He seemed like a very friendly axolotl. Sad to think that they're gone but the memory will be alive forever :) And kudos to you for taking care of him, I read and heard that axolotl care is very precise and really needs your utmost attention.

@joelkitchen2560
@joelkitchen2560 2 жыл бұрын
@@himadrimukherjee2381 The octopus was transferred to his house from wherever he purchased it. From the sounds of it Heidi is much more interacted with where she is than where she was. That’s not to say she isn’t missing out on a more natural experience in the ocean, but don’t you think if she wanted “revenge” that she would be aggressive with these two humans containing her? She has every ability to attack and bite them and yet we never see that from her. So if she wanted revenge, in dealing with this much of an intelligent being, I don’t think we would need interactive toys. She is still after all what we would consider animalistic and could and more than likely WOULD be aggressive with them if vengeance was her mindset.

@@joelkitchen2560 although I do not completely disagree with you, as my original comment was actually made in jest but I would like to point out a few contradictions in what you wrote. I would like to point out simply because I have seen such mistakes too often. You're saying the octopus is intelligent to know its surroundings have apparently improved so it (being intelligent) sees no point to be vengeful, but you also add that it is animalistic to seek physical revenge. It looks like you're twisting the attribution of "intelligence" on the octopus to suit your argument. But the reality could've been that the octopus at the same time feels grateful (for his improved accommodation) and resentful (for not being freed) and knowing it's survival is at the hands of the human can't take physical revenge but can construct pranks to extract some satisfaction! Like what we do to our nasty colleagues? The problem is your argument is too biased by what we think it should've done (been like an animal) together with what we think intelligence is (anthropomorphic) .

I hope so too. Heidi unfortunately probably won’t be in this world for too long, as many of us don’t usually live much beyond two years. It can vary from species to species but it’s a fair margin. It is believed that their lifespan is intrinsically linked to their intelligence as well. If you want to get the full scope of all of this I definitely recommend checking out the book or the audiobook Other Minds. It covers the entire aspect of octopus life right from the beginning to the present day and it’s probably now one of my all-time favourite books. Trust me, it is well worth listening to.

Yeeeeah. Octopuses are definitely constant eating machines. Contrary to how they may look, they aren’t like creatures like reptiles that can eat once and then go for long periods without eating. They are always on the lookout for their next meal, so I guess it makes sense that a creature like this who is intelligent is intrinsically linked to it own development as well as finding food, that it would come to understand that pulling the cord and making the sound would lead to it receiving food. Once she figured this out, she probably started demanding food every time he crossed her mind so she would never want for it at all. Very intelligent, but also kind of lazy. Again, intelligence at work. Intelligence allows you to get away with achieving better results while implementing as little effort as possible. We’ve achieved it, and so many of the other more intelligent species on this planet have done so as well, so it makes sense octopuses have done the same thing. So cool to witness though, as well as totally adorable.☺️😌

It is the equivalent of the buttons for an Octopus. He could do the it with a disconnect at night. So I Wonder if they can learn to press a button for word communications like is being done with dogs and cats now. (How Stella learned to talk, Christina Hunger). Seems like this shows it’s possible and can have the same drawbacks until the animal learns social graces of appropriate times to use the buttons. Interesting!

Our very smart male cat wears a collar with a small bell. When I'm in the bathroom, cleaning up, instead of him meowing to be allowed in, he shakes his head, which rings the bell. Then I let him in, and he jumps up on the sink to drink from the faucet, which is the only way he'll drink, which means I have to turn it on, then off, when he's full. Darn smart cat has us trained well.

Talking to an octopus as if it's a little dog. Would be fun to walk around with one outside, if they had a sort of opposite-wetsuit on and enjoyed it too.
