Still catching up on your great vids. Another great innovation from you to make your day a bit easier. The equipment manufacturer needs to be adding a sensor on each of the outlet pipes to detect when the air flow is down indicating a block so you in the cab can be immediately alerted via a screen you have a blockage and on what pipe to stop and clear. Well done on your innovation

You could also measure the pressure in the lines. You could tee off every line to a small cheap pressure transducer and compare the value to a chosen setpoint. If the pressure increases in the line, that means the line is blocked. If the air flows freely in the line, the pressure is low. This is how it's done for a lot of similar applications. The huge advantage to this is that you don't have to measure at the opening near the ground, you could simply measure the pressure at a more convenient location further up the line.

I would say that the glove wins over complicated tech. 1. it doesn't need to settle between readings 2. you look directly at the reading, no need to divert your eyes to the display 3. it is notoriously hard to get a grasp of a digital reading, it jumps all over and your brain needs to process it. All in all, a garland on a stick beats the anemometer. And no batteries. Why not have a rod out of the way of the nozzles, with a garland for each nozzle. then when you want to check, you just lower all the garlands at once in front of the nozzle. Then you see all of them simultaneously, which are working or not 😄

@fat_biker
@fat_biker Ай бұрын
You could make a really good el-cheapo version of that using a computer CPU fan - you don't really need to precisely measure the wind speed, you just need to know that there's _enough_ - and if you do a bit of hacking with your soldering iron then blow on the resulting hacked CPU fan, it generates electricity. Build a little circuit board that will give you a red, amber, green LED based on the voltage generated by the tiny CPU fan windmill, & you have your DIY tool for testing air flow on your seed drill! For _extra_ cred, perhaps you put one fan on each nozzle, with a little airflow diverter that can be moved to deflect the air from the nozzle through the fan or moved out of the way, & then you can wire the whole lot to a box in the cab where you can lift the drill at any point on a run, push the button to move the air deflectors under the nozzles, & then check that you get e.g. 20 little green LEDs on the device, & then any reds or ambers you get tell you which nozzle is blocked or partially blocked. All green, you don't even have to get out of your cab...

Hey Tom. I have (perhaps) a better idea… instead of an anemometer, you could have a pressure sensor measuring at the end of each tube or perhaps a small tap off in the middle of each tube. Each sensor then transmits the pressure in each tube to the cab via Bluetooth LE. Over pressure would be a downstream blockage (mud), under pressure would be a top blockage (seed?). Anyway, you could have a realtime measurement of the tubes AS you use them. I guess if you used differential pressures sensors and some maths you could maybe work out some flow rates and know exactly how much seed you were laying down, as well as spotting blockages…🤔I’m an electronic engineer, happy to help you.

A partially blocked tube may actually give you a higher reading, as the blockage acts like a nozzle. If you wanted to get really clever ( but more complex) you could install a thermister in each tube, near the manifold, and monitor the temperature of the resistance of each thermistor. Faster moving air would have a cooling effect and you could monitor the difference between the tubes to detect a difference in air flows from Coulter blockages, all from the comfort of the cab. As a quick check your idea is great.
@villehietala9677
@villehietala9677 2 ай бұрын
I was skipping through all comments to find something related to temperature.. My first thought was to use thermal camera, as like you said, there will probably be an temperature difference between stuck and open nozzles or even the piping leading to those. Bit pricier than the anemometer, but way easier than installing tens of sensors, with wiring that would survive the farming around them. And i'm pretty sure Tom would find other uses for a thermal imager, if he doesn't have one already.
@davidquirk8097
@davidquirk8097 Ай бұрын
@@villehietala9677 the thermal camera is not a great choice for that environment due to the build up of soil on the machine and the variation in emmisivity caused by that. Building robust wiring systems for that application isn't hard. If I was in the uk I could solve the issue properly for you. Install a flow sensor on every air line, connect them to a little node computer, have a little screen in the cab that then tells you if the flow of any of the air lines drops 20% (or whatever got choose) below the average of the other air lines. Would save time by not having to get out and check. Will also trigger an alarm and alert you immediately when one gets blocked, allowing you to fix it immediately, improving crop yield
