Drake was really the first artist that demonstrated the ability to be both an R&B and rap artist. And not on different songs, on the same song. That's what changed the game... Before that Mix tape, fans and artists a like felt like they needed to be signed by a label and put out an album to make their break in Hip-pop. After So far gone, almost every rapper at that time was copying drakes formula of putting out a mix tape of album quality and pushing to make their mark even while unsigned.
