March 18th, 2017. On this day, "Middleweight Madness" took place between undefeated Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and “The Golden Child” Daniel Jacobs in one of the most exciting fights of 2017. Golovkin’s IBF, IBO, WBA (Super) & WBC Middleweight Titles were on the line.
However, the IBF title was not at stake for Daniel Jacobs as he skipped the IBF second weigh in where he and GGG were required to weigh no more than 170 pounds. It is estimated that Jacobs had a 10 to 15 pound weight advantage over Golovkin, weighing about 182 pounds on fight night.
Prefight records; Golovkin 36(33)-0, Jacobs 32(29)-1.
While GGG was the favorite going into the fight, a huge upset happened in the main undercard fight where little known Thai challenger Wisaksil Wangek aka "Srisaket Sor Rungvisai" scored a shocking and somewhat controversial MD win over undefeated No. 1 P4P fighter, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.
It was Gonzalez’s 1st professional loss in 12 years. Wangek received a lot of criticisms for his excessive use of headbutts which caused Chocolatito to bleed heavily throughout the fight. However, it should be noted that Gonzalez was competing in his 4th weight division at that time against a naturally stronger and bigger man in Rungvisai.
Thus, some have predicted the possibility of a Jacobs upset even though opinions were largely in favor of Golovkin to win by knockout; 80% favored GGG to win by KO in a Boxrec poll.
Going into the fight, Golovkin had a record of 17-0 in world title fights with notable wins over Daniel Geale, Curtis Stevens, Marco Antonio Rubio, Kell Brook, Willie Monroe Jr, Martin Murray, Matthew Macklin, Kassim Ouma, Gabriel Rosado & David Lemiuex all by knockouts.
Jacobs had scored meaningful victories over Ishe Smith, Sergio Mora & Peter Quillin.
While Jacobs’ apparent size advantage was expected, but many were rather surprised (including GGG) by the Miracle Man’s masterful stick and move strategy coupled with occasional stance switching which created a lot of troubles for the reigning world champion, who could not connect as often and cleanly as he was able to do against most of his previous opponents.
Additionally, Jacobs' weight advantage of up to 15 pounds enabled him to absorb Golovkin’s best shots.
GGG’s best moment occurred in the 4th frame when he floored Jacobs with 2 big right hands; making it the only 10-8 round of the fight. The rest of the bout was all in all action packed and extremely competitive, with many close and difficult-to-score rounds.
Both fighters displayed incredible heart, determination and will to win.
For the first time in 37 fights in an 11 year career, Golovkin was greatly troubled due to Jacobs’ elusive tactics who arguably gave him his hardest fight to date. Jacobs is also the 1st man to last the distance against the Middleweight Monster since Amar Amari back in November 2008.
GGG remains undefeated, via a disputed UD. What do you think of the decision?
In an unofficial scoring by a panel of 17 press row members, 9 scored in favor of GGG while 6 had Jacobs ahead after the 12th round. 2 others had it a draw.
However, just a few months after this fight the highly anticipated Middleweight Showdown between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez finally took place; Canelo, utilizing a similar strategy employed by Jacobs also troubled GGG and lasted the distance as well, also in a very exciting action-filled fight.
It ended with a somewhat controversial 3 way draw with scores of 114-114, 115-113, 110-118. Opinions were split, as to whether GGG or Alvarez deserved the decision. What’s more controversial was Adalaide Byrd’s scorecard of 118-110 in favor of Alvarez, a decision she received severe criticisms for.
Who do you think was the deserving winner of the fight? And who do you think wins in the rematch and how? Let me know in the comments.

Muchas gracias and keep your the punches up and chin tucked.

After watching Jacobs vs Canelo, I search for this again, Jacobs really had a wonderful career facing the very the best fighters toe to toe. Jacobs is above your average champion, if you compare him to champions beaten by Canelo and GGG.

Jacobs asked for a multi-million dollar contract after fighting not a single contender, got an early morning weigh in at 9 AM, skipped the fight day weigh in .... and still couldn't land anything. Second best middleweight.... seriously what fight were you watching. More like 200th best cruiserweight with every single detail of the fight catered to him. Still got pushed around the whole fight and knocked down. He was never in the fight, you were watching something else. Six rounds laugh my ass off.

@@ReservoirPunk on the back foot? That's not fighting on the back foot. He have never been on the ropes, always shared the center of the ring with canelo. Sometimes he stepped back but saying he fought the entire fight on the back foot is simply not the truth. Canelo on first golovkin fight fought on the back foot, lara against canelo did it, Mayweather against canelo did it and you can easily see the differences. Anyway the second golovkin canelo fight was more a draw but a canelo win is not a scandal as it was his win against lara or more the draw on first golovkin canelo fight

@Ryuksgelus
@Ryuksgelus 6 жыл бұрын
He was pushed back because those jabs hurt too. Jacobs rarely booked it. He clinched and fought just as often. Both were getting smashed in the face by a Jab. Canelo's strategy was to try and knock GGG out with a nicely timed big shot and when GGG ate them he tried to go for broke. Didn't even box just tried to overwhelm with flurries before running again. Plenty of downtime in the Canelo match but I guess timestamps don't exist in your world.

Exactly. I wish the GGG canelo fights weren't esch a year apart. How's GOLDENBOY is waiting for GGG to decline but everyone knows the power is the last thing to go but GGG doesn't really count on his punching power he still Bob's a bunch of the punches

@@unbiasedmedia1014 i feel bad for sergy, his record already looks crap loosing to 3 top contenders, i feel like he climbed up way too fast instead of building a bigger name for himself. he would be the next big name & the judges would've been on his side with the GGG fight, GGG however is no pushover, no one wanted to risk fighting him in his weight division they were waiting for him to retire with age

What's the fuss about Danny Jacobs's weight? At the official weigh in, the day before the fight, GGG was 159.6 lbs and Jacobs was 159.8 lbs. Over the course of one night, by the morning weigh in, Daniel Jacobs would come to weigh 182 lbs. 12 lbs more than Golovkin and over the amount of weight allowed to be put on overnight. If a fighter gain 182 overnight, odds are he had to severly strain himself to make weight. This is why Jacobs is moving up to 168 to fight bigger fighters, Meanwhile, Golovkin will stay at 160 to beat up on former jr.middleweights and bloated welterweights. (Canelo and Brook.)

Definetly saw a very close battle between two warriors , Jacobs was throwing the most bombs , not as effective as the 1-2's GGG was landing , along with knockdown I saw GGG winning , but at a very close margin. Wouldve been intresting to see a rematch.it was GGG most challenging fight , Jacobs seems more of brawler and street wise than canelo, not to mention stronger taller significant reach advantage.

Triple G honestly wins this quite comfortably, out jabbed him most of the fight, landed way many more clearer punches, more power punches + the knockdown. Jacobs was hitting his gloves through majority fight and also came in 10 lbs heavier...

My first time watching this fight in its entirety I had GGG winning comfortably by 9 rounds to 3 plus a knockdown and I thought the fight was boring. When I went back and watched the full fight twice over I realized it was a very close, competitive fight and though the pace was slow, there was good strategy and intense exchanges. The knockdown really sealed the deal for GGG though along with him controlling the lulls in the action with his jab. I'm kind of wishing we got GGG-Jacobs II instead of Canelo-GGG II but GGG would be stupid to not take that payday.
