Geno: The Star Road Warrior

(THE STORY)
In the Mushroom Kingdom, the powerful Wishing Stars from the Star Road went missing and began to throw Super Mario's world into chaos.
From the skies, the Starman ♡♪!? (nicknamed Geno) came down into a toy puppet. His mission was to bring back the stars. Mario and his new friend Mallow join with him to set things right in the Mushroom Kingdom.
(THE FANS)
Many fans such as myself wondered when we would finally see Geno again. Little mentions here and there would give us a little glimmer of hope, but alas, things did not quite turn out the way we had wished. It was almost 2 decades of waiting to see him appear in a new game.
Many have wondered what fans of Geno saw in him. In the hope of answering some of this curiosity, this is a slice of his story in Super Mario RPG. He is a very different type of character for the Mario Series and stands out as a canonically powerful ally. It was a shame to just forget him along with Mallow, the cloud prince.
(THE ANIMATION)
Through finishing university and many other commitments, here is the fruit of a 5 year labor. It was a let down seeing companies want to put him away into the past. Here is a send off to the Smash Bros Series addition wish and a look towards the future.
The animation was started in Blender upon its Greasepencil tool alpha release back in 2017. The latest version in Blender's recent release is one powerful tool now days. The animation is a testament to its evolution over the last 5 years.
I would like make some behind the scenes soon to explain how it was utilized to make the animation.

The fact that both PapaGenos and TerminalMontage commented on this video should tell you everything you need to know about it. This animation perfectly captures what people see in Geno as a character, and for that alone you deserve far, FAR more than 2,000 views. Every frame here is stuffed to the brim with personality, and the original music couldn't compliment said frames any better if it tried. Even if I had no idea this took five years to complete, that fight on the Axem Rangers ship would've had me wondering just how much work had gone into this. But it still would've been clear to me that from front to back, this was a huge labor of love. And man, don't even get me started on that final shot with Sora! Absolutely phenomenal work!

This is an animation that carries many emotions built over many years . From Happiness in seeing the character first as a kid, hearing he might have been in brawl, seeing him in Mario and Luigi super star saga in form of an easter egg, the disappointment of the years of him not being acknowledged, excitement in his costume being added to Smash 4, the abysmal mii costume recycling in Ultimate, and so on. This animation was incredibly personal in that if we never got to see Geno again in a game. Atleast many could see why he was so followed over the years through this animation. Geno giving his invitation to Sora is a symbol of the older generation allowing the newer generation to have new heroes of their own. If anything, maybe some of us fans could find closure that we had been seeking. Much love dude. I'm super grateful that you enjoyed it to this extent. It makes all the blood sweat and tears worth it.

I am super grateful you enjoyed it! When I was making it I was like "THIS IS BY A FAN, FOR US FANS" the entire way. Things like making sure all the characters had the weapons when you get them in game. Kinda like the sticky gloves on mallow or masher on Mario at the Yaridovich fight. The Yaridovich fight had to feel menacing! That was one creepy dude! His doppler ability, his will o wisp ball, his spear attack; they had to be there. Even Geno's weapons in order of when you get them are all there! If was fun to combine them in the final fight with the Axem rangers(rocket punch, hand gun, hand cannon, geno beam, geno whirl, geno boost, and geno flash). I'm glad I could offer something up for a game and character that means a lot to many.

Kinda touching how you did justice for far more than just Geno (Mallow & the Bosses) but if you could have squeezed in one more boss in, who would it have been? I know Johnny and Mack were teased and Exor w/ Geno Whirl 9999 reference would probably fit best, but I would have loved to see how you would have adapted, say, Booster or Croco.

This is incredibly sweet! I started this back when the final character for smash bros was announced before the second wave of dlc was announced. Full time school, full time job, but it didn't matter. I needed to finish this. I was determined to show what Geno mean't to me and so many others. I was utterly devastated when the second dlc was announced and he still wasn't in the game. So many friends messaged me offering condolences I took the bitterness forming and decided to go even harder on the animation. I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed my work! Dude was always so menacing! I had to do him justice. He's almost a rival to Geno, I always imagined. Red cape instead of blue, a metal robot vs essentially a wooden robot, and out to steal the stars instead of saving them. I couldn't finish it with all that was going on during the SmashBros hype but I felt I had to complete it regardless. There's a lot of fun little Easter eggs I littered around for fans of the game too. I love Bowser cause out of all the Mario characters, he's the most expressive and dynamic. There's a lot of freedom when working with him. He can be a brutish villain, a big baby, a dumb bully, goofy dad, etc.

Thank you for making this animation. Geno means a lot to me. And he looks so heroic here, too! I wish he appeared more in the series, especially in the RPGs, even though they probably won't make new ones anymore. He still has a lot to offer as a character, and I really think they should make more use of his potential to expand on a lore that has been gone for too long, and that, in my opinion, the Mario franchise still absolutely needs to this very day.

I had to come back here after the remake. This is one of those videos that leaves a big impact once It is watched, now even more. I'm honestly astounded by the timing you published it. For a long time Super Mario RPG has been barely mentioned and then, almost before the announcement from Nintendo and Square, you upload this video. Did you sense the remake coming early? Seriously, this is incredible. I'm so happy that this game and all of the characters in it are getting some well-deserved Spot light, it is great! I hope this video always stays on You Tube, It was a great experience.👍

It was an ongoing feeling I had always as a Geno fan. It started when he wasn't added into Smash Bros Brawl, then Smash 4. The real sting was when he was de-confirmed in Ultimate that I felt I had to show what Geno meant to us fans. It seemed like companies were trying to hide him and the game he was from. I almost gave up half way into the animation when his mii costume was recycled in that one pack. I had a flood of dms from friends knowing how bad it was gonna devastate me to see it despite all the effort I was putting into the animation. If you look at the lyrics of the song we wrote, it's actually about Geno, the fans, and companies keeping him locked away while also using his forest theme melody. But, here we are! With our blue boy back in action! 🌠 Thank you for the kind words.

I had this kind of feeling too, especially when in the remake of Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, his cameo was completely removed, along with the magikoopa/kamek wearing his costume from Final Fantasy, who was also replaced by Dr. Toadley. I'm glad that Geno's back, indeed. Also, Merry Christmas!

damn this was good animation done for this it could be turned int a show based on the event sin the game with how that was done. It show cased i think about every ability of Geno, and many of the others. it did have a severe lack of chomp though lol. It had a very smooth anime like flow for the action sequences.

Thanks! Yeah, I felt people didn't get why Geno fans wanted him in Smash so I aimed to spotlight all of Genos weapons and abilities to show him off. I added some other character abilities and weapons too in order of when you should have them in the game (marios masher, mallows sticky gloves, peaches war fan etc.) Cheers for the remake! 🎉

Ocarina of Time was delayed so much but it stands the test of time almost 30 years since it came out. This thing took forever to come out. If it looked super incomplete, I woulda hated to watch it, kinda like the 2018 animation I have on my channel.
