Ranking How USELESS Bowser is in Every Mario Game

Bowser's been an awesome villain for the Mario series over the last 35+ years, and he's cooked up some pretty incredible plans... but also a lot of duds.
Today, we're looking at Bowser's character in every mainline Mario game and ranking him from worthless to elite.

you also completely forgot that bowser in mario odyssey not only he had an entire kingdom for himself but he also has stolen and attacked all over the world for magical artifacts for his marriage affecting a lot of countries as well as invading all the countries with his troops (notably when he put the robot wiggler in new donk city) bowser was a world threat in Mario Odyssey that everyone in all of the countries hated and feared Bowser is definitely elite on Mario Odyssey dont forget he beat Mario easily on the intro cutscene

How come nobody is talking about how Bowser in Odyssey went to other kingdoms, stole their most prized possessions just to use it for HIS wedding, made Mario chase him through every kingdom to get them back, summoned a fucking dragon to kill Mario in the middle of nowhere (like there is no stolen artifact this time Bowser knocks Mario's ship over and lands him in a deserted and unusual world, TWICE, and then summoned a dragon to kill him) all so he could have his wedding on the fucking Moon. "He kidnaps Peach out of desperation... it's only really done to get back at Mario" I doubt it. I think that was his plan all along. Send Mario and Luigi on a wild goose chase while he captures the Princess. After all, even if Mario and Luigi fail, he still wins because he'll have control of several lands. ...I think Mario 64 goes above 'typical bad guy' if you're counting SMB1, Lost Levels and 3 as 'pretty menacing'. He took over what is basically the centre of the Mushroom Kingdom, after all, and trapped Peach in there, but she wasn't even in a physical form. Like you could have searched every room of the castle and you wouldn't have found her. "Hangs out with Peach at his castle"... No, Bowser Jr. has Peach the entire time, and flees whenever Mario beats the boss of that world. So other than fighting Mario two times, he doesn't actually do anything on his own. "Galaxy 2 is basically a retelling of the first game"... Sure, if you ignore the parts where Mario doesn't end up on the Comet Observatory, goes to completely different galaxies, has new power-ups... totally the same thing as the first game. Although admittedly I think it was stated that Galaxy 2 is basically an alternate universe. But no, it's not a retelling the of the first game. I'd say that the fact that he smashes up the Mushroom Kingdom, so you have to rebuild the place as WELL as chasing him down, would put him in pretty meancing, same at SMB1. He doesn't turn people into bricks and rocks, but he destroys all of their homes. "He just wants that Peach" ...and the entire Mushroom Kingdom along with it. "The game has his name in it" ...And isn't as impressive as taking over the Galaxy. He's just a mindless beast in Bowser's Fury for the most part, if memory serves. Pretty Menacing, but not Elite. Super Mario Wonder... he steals a power that can change reality. He gains reality-altering powers, and you think that's 'typical bad guy'?

@@DobieMeltfire IDW Eggman, despite being unmistakably cruel and sadistic, is less capable than his game counterpart. He fumbled with the Metal Virus. Despite that arc showcasing how vile the doctor is, he is alarmingly indifferent to the Zombots starting to ignore his commands. He even acknowledges that it was possible due to how viruses work, but simply says he'll think of something later. He didn't even have a backup plan for that. He didn't even develop a vaccine for it, with his only plan for avoiding infection being "Don't touch the Zombots," and he dismisses Starline's valid concerns as nitpicking. Ultimately, he loses control of everything when Starline brings over the Deadly Six to try to control the Zombots. Even though the platypus uses the Cacophonic Conch to keep the Zeti in line, it isn't enough, as he runs out of breath and the Zeti take it away from him. This forces Eggman, Starline, and Metal to retreat. Not helped by the writer's (Ian Flynn) comments; "Eggman never, NEVER has a solid plan. It's always a big execution, but he never settles on the details." Even though that statement itself is also BS.

in fairness to Odyssey, Bowser terrorizes multiple kingdoms, with varying intensity. While his motives seem less menacing compared to world domination, his actions that span across multiple kingdoms all across the world definitely make up for it in my book. I think he deserves either a Typical Bad Guy or Pretty Menacing tier Also for Wonder: His plan wasnt really to just turn into a castle, but rather he did that in order to build up power for his real plan: a giant reality warping wonder of... some description. We never really get told what that really entails, as Mario beats him before he can pull it off so it's not worth as many bad guy points, but the concept itself is definitely menacing

Just going to ignore the Paper Mario series? Bowser is the main antagonist in Paper Mario, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, and Paper Mario: Color Splash. Thousand-Year Door, Super Paper Mario, and Origami King had different antagonists. I'd say don't ignore the Mario & Luigi Series but I believe Bowser was only the main antagonist in Paper Jam and was either a side character or an ally like in Bowser's Inside Story, Super Mario RPG, and Super Paper Mario.

Part of the reason Bowser is so "worthless" in NSMB is because he spends like 90% of the game being dead. Mario ends him right at the start in World 1, and brutally at that. Bowser Jr. only takes the reins because Bowser isn't there to do so himself

Gotta agree with some other comments, the RPGs should have been here. Sure they're not canon, but Bowser is at some of his best in those games. And there's a weird take of him actually being on the same side as Mario in 2 of the RPG games. Technically 3 if you count Super Paper Mario, but that's much closer to a platformer.

My take for the 64 and 64 DS remake So, you're saying that Super Mario 64 is just typical, because well, many stars stolen and Peach is locked up. Meanwhile THE Remake on the DS is ELITE, because he locks Mario, Luigi and Wario in the rooms that idk what to call (besides closets for false imprisonment), along with previous mentioning about the stars and Princess Peach is just Elite?! If I do this tier on how useless is Bowser, I would put both at ELITE or Pretty Menacing(mostly ELITE), because y'all do realize that the stars gives Mario huge amount of power that he could oneshot Bowser with that much power. But, in those two games, the original has 120 stars stolen, while the DS has 30 more (which makes 150 stars stolen instead). So, that would be Mass Grand Larceny and if Bowser used the stars, it's over for the kingdom. But to be fair, he probably knew that the stars is too much power for him to control if used all 150. So, he might've scattered them in the castle with paintings. So, imo, both of them are ELITE, but the original will be lowered, because it may be menacing for what he did, it's not quite big deal unlike the remake.

You can’t really judge 3D land based off of motives. That’s a bit lazy. Idk if you don’t like the game or not but still, he’d still be pretty useful considering he’s doing exactly what the original bowser(from the first Mario game) did but better. His end fight was so good as well with the music too. Really felt like “this is it, this is the end”. And let’s not mention the special worlds where he reappears again as a skeleton after having kidnapped Luigi. 3D land Bowser was done dirty and I want an apology ASAP

Ugh I hate hearing complaints about "consent" when it refers to telling old style stories. It's like when medieval stories are being told by "modern audience" losers who have to change everything because they think it's offensive. It's like, if you don't like the stories, don't tell them at all. Normal people don't want sanitized stories that, at one time, were good. I can't remember thinking bowser was "Awesome". He was "Pretty cool" at best in the 90's... then Mario 64 comes around and he's like "well he's okay I guess..." because we've already beaten him so much by then. A villain gets less interesting and threatening with every defeat so by the time Mario Galaxy came along I genuinely hated the character because they REFUSED to use anyone else, and nothing is exciting about a game where the main threat is someone you have beaten over and over again. Mario Galaxy 2 was when I was just DONE with the franchise and never bought a mario game since. Now, the tier list... what in the hell is this. Worthless in Yoshis' Island? His giant baby form was the only good boss battle with him there ever was, he actually looked menacing in that form. They tried to do that again in bowsers fury but that doesn't work anymore, doesn't matter what form he takes because he's been overused past the point of being a joke. Super Mario bros 1 and Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2... are you freaking KIDDING me. He looks like a complete idiot , his design is incomplete and terrible. His actual proper design was in Super Mario Bros 3, anything before that and he looked laughable. I know he doesn't exactly look bright in his finished design but the bowser in the first two genuinely look like they aren't smart enough to not choke to death while eating. The Elite section makes no sense either. Mario Galaxy 2's final boss was the easiest boss I've ever fought and I've been gaming since the mid 90's. You must be putting them their because of the soundtrack ALONE, which is entirely unfitting because they're trying to make it dramatic when I've had more dramatic pisses than bowser fights. Doesn't work, the composer was talented and wasted on a insipid and weak experience. I'm glad I skipped to the end to look at the list instead of listening because any possible reasoning for these picks would be absolute lunacy.

NDMBDS Bowser always struck me as a especially pitiful. He has like no role in the story (he does not even perform the actual Peach's kidnapping), by World 2 he's a skeleton and by mid World 8 he's actually dead. His fights are all lame and really easy, it's Bowser Jr. that does literally everything (he even resurrects his father at the end) and he does not even have a solo final boss as he's with Jr. once again. NSMBDS' is surely one of the most worthless Bowser if you ask me.

What about the Mario party games? Bowser is a menace in several of them often altering the entire game board. Not really needed to mention most of the cast in mario party games (nor mario cart) since they are all just the same function but look different and unlike mario cart there is usually an actual plot of some sort in the mario party games. Just saying, absent from these "in Every Mario Game" lists it is kinda not a complete list if you don't include mario party and mario cart games, you can even just include the entire series as one entry since usually they will boil down to the same rating. There are a few others absent as well like mario and luigi: bowser's inside story, paper mario, and super mario RPG.

mario wonder should be in pretty menacing: first of, this game is for wee babys, not adults, second, he wants the whole world to forceibly dance to trap them forever(with style)(+it is on the whole universe)

9:44 ok...but like almost all bowser fights are too easy. And this one i felt was one of themore unique and interactive ones. Requiring you to carefully time jumps to hit the beats and also dodge all the stuff hes throwing at you. Makes it so much more than most 2d bowser fights, where its literally just "hit the switch"

Funny to say he would want to just kill her to get back at Mario super princess peach might agree with you there. However usually nope this giant turtle dragon literally has a down bad for a princess that doesn't want anything to do with him and he just has a rivalry with a plumber. But it's nice that people think that he would want peach for his kids that's Noble but you guys are wrong because Bowser is a selfish piece of s*** he wants princess peach to himself if Bowser Jr wants to learn and grow with her teachings that's fine but Bowser here for what he thinks is his idea partner anything else is secondary outside of his desire to rule as much as he can and that is why he's still a bad guy he will always want to kidnap peach sure to lower out Mario but in the meantime try and fail to riz up princess peach.

fun fact, the toad bricks are not breakable, they're the ones that give you coins/powerups. you cant kill toads :(

I would actually say SMW2 deserves one above worthless, simply because he does try to actually kill you at the end. Plus, he tries to use yoshi as a toy horse, so i give him bonus points for that.
