Genocyber, no one EVER mentions the source material which had so much potential and was a completely different story and less hateful. The fact that this anime got so many episodes is bonkers. Tony really left a lot hanging on the plate that didn't involve minor child abuse.

It hoenstly feels like, if it had more budget and fanbase, Genocyber could have basically been a Cyberpunk Violence Jack, it just feels like we have the origin story, one of the story arcs / villian battles, then it rushes to a really weak ending because it had to scrounge just to get it made.

I know genocyber hasn't aged well, but its apocalyptic imagery and myra's tragic backstory that resonates with me, and her increasingly deteriorating mental state as she deals with the complete madness and death of the situation she puts through has had a significant impact on me artistically. I found it in 2010, about the same time as akira and newgrounds. the death and horror seemed almost subversive to what was on TV in those days.

I only discovered Genocyber by watching a list about bloody anime, then seeing someone had uploaded the whole series. I do think the first episode has some interesting elements that could be expanded into an decent series of handed by the right people. I did think it was sad when her friend died, and wished there had been more character. I also think the main theme that plays when the monster is about to begin ruining things is fantastic. I have to agree with a lot of your points about the downsides, and it won’t be an anime I return to.

This is hinted at several times in the first episode when kenneth and later diana mentions elaine and her are part of eachother. Later mentioning the vajra expeirment their mother went through is what resulted in there being two girls born instead of one which is where their own problems came from. Diana being crippled and elaine having the mind of an animal.

I've seen a few of the titles Sho Aikawa wrote or created, and the biggest themes I notice from them is an interest in Japanese history, especially the Showa era and 60s and 70s pop culture. What's weird is that outside of his work with Ichiro Itano and the odd title like this, his work by and large isn't that violent.

It's gratuitous violence for the sake of gratuitous violence, while trying to pass off having a plot. Speaking of which...why HAVEN'T you done an episode on Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend? The fucking bright colourful pop and rock 80’s fun action cheesefest that is BGC? Like...why tho?? First you have the AD Police Files OVA (the manga for AD Police was way better imo and actually felt tonally consistent with BGC with actually alright writing), then you get that awful BGC comic by Dark Horse that was so bad and fanfic-y it got canned after it’s initial miniseries debut that turned Priss into an emo bitch, and now Genocyber being BGC but for edgelords. I don't think Genocyber is bad because the use of ultra-violence lacks a deeper meaning. Some artists just want to create dark and violent art because they enjoy it, and I see value in it. I enjoyed Genocyber mainly because I wanted to see death, gore, and destruction. The fact that ultra-violence is so rare in anime only makes me appreciate more that the artists behind it were willing to go that far. I also recommend the animated short Hammerhead and Housing Complex C for some modern animated gore.

It's not great, but it doesn't have to be. There are only 3 chapters, and they aren't that long. The story may be fairly simple, but it's easy to follow and it is *not* convoluted. I was a bit surprised and liked the bit where the mom's daughter was on the plane destroyed in the 1st part... I like it when you have threads tying stories together like that. And like another poster mentioned, the 3rd chapter is more *Daimajin,* which is fine with me as I love the *Daimajin* films. It's almost relentless with the gore, but I was never bored. And *M.D. Geist* is probably as close as we're ever going to see a Roy Batty prequel.

I think that Part 3 was less of a remake of CyGuard, and more of Ohata's take on Daimajin. Think about it, both stories center entirely around a city ruled by dictatorship with the leaders being very dismissive of legends surrounding a statue coming alive and bringing ruin to the city, both stories feature a massacre at the hands of the government with one person's dying wish to awaken the monster triggering its wrath, both stories essentially switch to the kaiju genre as the awakened monster lays waste to everything in its path before returning back into a fossilized state. I think that the plot structure falls more in line with the basic formula of the Daimajin Trilogy.

I love it too despite its flaws, I don't care about how people look at me when I say it (actually, maybe a little). That SA scene should have been cut, or rewritten entirely though.

@@sumdood8563Yeah that scene felt shoe horned in there with no substance . There's a scene like that in Beserk but it has substance to the main characters backstory. They don't show it for edge they show why Guts is the way he is and why he reacts the way he dose. It's an uncomfortable and sad part of his childhood. It's disturbing and trust me as much as I love Beserk as a story some parts are really hard to read because of certain scenes that are very intense in nature due to subject matter or viseral imagery. The great writting and characters is why I love Beserk and why I read the Manga though

@@sumdood8563Genocyber has potential to have a unqiue and even dare I say well written story. It's Manga counterpart shows this more so but the Ova never explored the Manga's ideas. Which is unfortunate. If given the chance, this story could have been better. I like the concept and designs . I just wish there was more substance and development in it's Anime counterpart story and character development wise . And I wish the Manga version was longer to explore it's ideas further.

Genocyber is just a metalhead anime fan ultraviolent wet dream, i dont think theres a 'story' for it, fairy dreamin is a bop tho. Also i like your editing of videos, cool to find another channel like kennys (i hope i can see it grow too like i did with kennys [found him before the nora video])

The story is really as straightforward as it gets. Two young girls are experimented on and transformed into a weapon, forced to fight against their will. In their clashes with military forces from around the world they trigger a near-extinction event. The sisters finally find a way to go enter a state of hibernation and the Genocyber body is petrified. Then ep. 4 and 5 queue, which show two strangers navigating a dystopian city, only for them to be brutally murdered and the city be burned to a crisp when the sisters, this time more or less voluntarily, give the city the good ole Sodom and Gomorrha treatment. What happens to the sister is, for all intents and purposes, left ambiguous.

Look... *Genocyber,, M.D. Geist* and *Mad Bull* are not bad anime. *Black Cat* is bad anime. If you create something, regardless of how simple or straight forward, and achieve your goal, that is a mission: accomplished. I have never found any of the hardcore animes you mentioned to be _boring._ *Black Cat* is only saved in the terrible english dub, if even that. 38:00 actually... yes. Even without the gore, it's still a decent B movie with well executed action scenes. Sometimes you're in the mood for *Bridge on the River Kwai,* and sometimes you're in the mood for *Invasion U.S.A*

Reminded me of Elfen Leid, but with organic/psychic mechs, and on a global level of death. Both had appeals, but missed many marks that they could have hit. And that's very accurate about Berserk, 1000% I recommend the series, all the anime, the movies, and the manga!

I don't think there's ever been an anime TV, movie, and OVA series out there that has made me want to inflict bodily harm on its director and screenplay writer other than _Genocyber_ . It's amazing to me what anime franchises Koichi Ohata and Sho Aikawa would go to work on in their later years considering some of their earlier works didn't have them institutionalized or at least get psych evaluations. Then again, the original _MD Geist_ is one of my favorite guilty pleasures despite all of the strikes against it, so do with that information what you will. XD Nice video, although I could only stand to listen to your narration; the absurdly graphic violence, brutality, and nihilism of _Genocyber_ has scarred me for life. Keep up the good work.

This was a really good coverage of what I watched and yeah I feel the same way, you could really see the progressive drop off in quality I started to get irritable later on and even fell asleep for 5mins on episode 3. It's a shame really that it actually is just a potentially good story told very poorly, it had alot of cool themes and unique visuals but it just fumbled the bag in alot of key important ways that just makes it just slightly below being a middling anime, the violence is really what keeps the anime in any type of discussion i'm sure. Also that Kickass Ending theme.

Great overview of this series. I see I am not the only one that was ultimately disappointed. I loved the potential this series had in part 1 and it just squanders it with each successive episode. I can imagine a talented team taking the story, or remaking the story into something cool and impactful. All we are left with are memes about the terrible voice acting in the Ark de Grande City arc.
