could you summarize for dummies please? My gf and I were arguing about whether we would be able to pick out traits for our kid in ten years... like as if you were going to a car dealership and include all the options to the car... can we do that Prof Hsu. thanks.

It is hard to answer your question, it depends on many factors the main being in which country you live. It is as of now not possible to pick arbitrary traits for your kids, such as height, eye colour, intelligence, longevity. It is theoretically possible but but not done in practice because we lack studies with sufficiently large amounts of people to do it such as IQ, and because some of the traits are controversial to change even if predictable, such as height. What you can do right now, if your country allows it, is to do IVF, and get genetic testing to reduce risks for serious illnesses such as neurodegenerative diseases like alzheimers. As the science progresses fast, with very large funding coming from AI companies who are very interested in the technology it might very well be possible that in ten years we could choose to modify to some capacity some of traits that our children will have, but it is an open question as to know if governmental regulations and social attitudes will follow this trend ...
