Player numbers will shoot back up with Penacony, just as they always do with major patch releases for all of hoyo's games. Dr. Ratio's banner was going to be a weaker banner cycle for sure, so giving him out for free caused so much public attention that it'll draw players back and also new players will join in, making it more profitable in the long term. It also fortifies their public image as being very generous, at least by successful gacha game standards, which if they can maintain, will continue to be a positive force to pull in new players in the future.

If so that is an absurd comparison given how their MAUs shift as you move further into the .X patch cycles. Regardless, Sensor Tower's revenue data suggests that for the most part HSR is keeping up with Genshin, so even if their MAUs are a good bit lower they're still making about as much profit, arguably more given how much easier it is to create HSR characters.

Yeah I have to admit I see a world of difference in the generosity from the HSR team and the Genshin team. For the life of me I do not understand why Genshin is so miserably greedy. Aelloy was a "free 5 star" in the most technical sense possible but shes one of the worst characters in the game and was only given out as part of a promotion for the game being released on PS. Dr. Ratio is actually a very solid character and has actual relevance in the story. Also not related to the "greed" aspect but what is up with the Genshin's teams aversion to characters with being anything other than scrawny? Like the guys have no muscle and the girls are all very modest when it comes to be curvy. Not saying they all have to be voluptuous but they seem averse to having anything above a moderate C-cup at best. For a long time people said it was because Genshin was a bigger game and the Chinese censorship rules were being more heavily enforced on it... but HSR is a big multi-platform game as well and we have the likes of Himeko, Kefka, and Black Swan running around in it.
