I have a similar headcanon but instead of going emotionless, he'd get caught off gaurd at first. And eventually he'd start trying to imitate his friend to pretend that it's the friend smiling back at him. It never looks quite right.

Imagine this. Venti goes back to sleep again (as he does sometimes. Usually for a century or so). When he wakes nothing in Mind has changed but what's interesting is what he sees when he goes to the square. He sees there a boy with braided hair playing a lyre. The boy looking much like his old friend. When the boy sees him he smiles and Venti. Venti simply freezes unable to comprehend what he is seeing Could this really be his friend who helped free the people all those years ago? Back when he was nothing but a small wind sprite? The boy offers a duet, for the two to sing together and Venti accepts. He knows not whether this boy really is his friend but reincarnated, but a part of him believes it is. Aaa sorry I just had a story idea
