Mondstadt is solely based on Germany AND middle/western Europe at the same time because its all stereotypes of Europe in one place. And many of these stereotypes can fit in every middle/western european country. I try to discribe what i mean: Houses: these types are more southern Germany/Austria and Switzerland. Clothing clearly Bavarian and Austrian inspired, but many european countrys have similar "Trachten". Wine: Yes we have a really heavy wine culture in Germany, mostly in the west. Which neighbores France. The church in Mondstadt. Yes we have such cathedrals in Germany. The "Ulmer Münster" has the highest tower of any cathedral in the world. The "Kölner Dom" is on 3rd place. Most of the cathedral are in the west. Or a little bit simply: German culture is more divers than many might think. Mondstadt can be discribed as solely based on german cultural stereotypes because we share culture with our neighboring countrys. I think "geography now" (even when its an older video) gives a good perspective.

Ok but like as someone who is of African American descent (half) I will say some people are definitely really pale for the region they are in. But at the same time I don’t really care. I think they did a good job at representing the look, and the skin tone just didn’t really follow. It’s just kind of stupid to hate on genshin for something they’ve not done so many times. Like ok, people have good reason not to be happy with the characters completion, but like really? In my opinion the characters look great as is, and the region looks like a good time, that’s all that matters to me.

It's kind of funny how these people that care so much about an "accurate representation" of the characters go to twitter and proceed to make a fan art portraying Xilonen (the geo jaguar MILF) as a afro-descendant woman. The name of the character is being taken from an Aztec goddess, so that means it would make more sense to represent her as an indigenous woman (who are not black). Besides, MiHoyo has always given deity names to any character at random. I mean, I've never seen Baal represented as a "japanese" woman with purple hair before, or Barbatos as a drunken femboy bard. Just because it has a deity name, it doesn't mean that they will make them look like the traditional representation of such; they will just make them look like a generic anime character (like literaly every genshin character). The only aspects of real-life culture that they include in the game are buildings, landscapes, food, names and sometimes clothing. The people itself... Not so much. Like I said, they all look pretty much the same. And Natlan is just a region which is gonna include aspects of a lot of (very different) places, like Hawaii, Australia, Africa and Latin America. I don't understand why these people insist on making them all black, like I see in their "accurrate" and "realistic" fan arts.

They have already marketed the characters and their official designs. I think it's very funny how most of the people complaining are probably white and american. I'm from Mexico and I'm not bothered at all by Natlan's character design choice. We have to remember that GI is a chinese game, and their preference towards characters that are whiter it's part of their own culture. A taned skin for them is associated to people that work on fields, which most people in China are NOT appealed to. I am not trying to defend either party here but like, if you don't like it, don't play it, don't spend money on a free game, don't support them. Let others decide either the game is good enough for them or not. A counterpoint to this entire thing. If you look at all of the Genshin characters, aside from a few pretty much ALL of the characters are white regardless of region. Liyue characters like Chonyun, Shenhe, Ninguan and Inazuma characters like Kazuha, Chiori, and Yoimiya are all just as white as Navia, Jean and any other Mondstadt/Fontaine character. For Hoyo, skin color is not important to depicting culture but rather things like local cuisine and architecture. Any color based argument for Natlan or Sumeru can also be applied to Inazuma and Liyue but you don't see those people arguing for those regions do you?

If you ask any Chinese or Japanese person whether they view themselves as white skinned, I doubt you'll find many that would say they are as white as Caucasian. However in game, the asian influenced characters are just as white as the European influenced ones. Xinyan is tanned not because she is a representation of more colored people but instead to represent her ideals to break from normal Liyue traditions. Xinyan's tan is more akin to Gyarus in Japanese culture who share similar ideologies as Xinyan.

I think there's a reason that this topic is not in the KZbin space, its because KZbin is a more surface level fanbase interaction site than deeper social media sites that really delve into a community. On both tik tok and twitter there is a much higher level of care for the game and that results in harsher criticism for the game they all commonly like. Where as on KZbin, where a lot of people just go to watch a video which is a more passive activity than making tweets or tik toks, there is a lot more "brushing aside" of these issues, and you can see it from these comments. Many of the top comments are not really talking about the actual issue you very thoughtfully presented, they are talking more about how the 'boycott will never work' or 'this is all going to blow over'. While I do agree with those things, it's frustrating seeing people wanting to brush the actual topic of the video off pretty swiftly, and not lie in the conversation for longer. You can still love a game and be aware of its flaws, not just one or the other.

Temperature has has very little effect of tanning of the skins. What actually make the skin tan are the Radiation from the sunlight itself, the UV light that penetrate our skin cause the pigmentation and make it darker. It just a body self defense in work. Thats why people from rain forest are lighter and people from desert are darker. So, if you say that you have to get darker skin because some place are hotter, that a total bullshit and directly racist because you assumed people that coming from this area should be black and darker. I don't care what people skin colour is and which area you come from, we all the same human being with differences, you all people have to admit that. We all are different, the important thing is to accept the differences and try to live with it, do not ever justify the race or place a stereotypes on them. Additionally, even though in reality people coming from a certain races tend to have darker skin tone, it still did not okay to generalised their entire race overall based on the skin colour, and we should not categorised a race based on skin in the first place. except from what we see in game, some of the characters aren't South african inspired but rather West-African (Iansan and Ororon which are both inspired by Yoruba - a Nigerian Tribe), which has the darkest skin tones in Africa. Also yes there is some australian rep, but its mostly Latin-American. Although some of the people "protesting" aren't very well informed and are likely doing so for the sake of doing so, my take (As a Nigerian) is that as a black person, it would be nice to see proper representation as they take elements of our culture but then refuse to make adaquate representation through the characters appearance. Obviously it isn't world ending but it is disappointing that we arent. to give an example, if say Yun Jin, a character who is a representation of a Chinese opera singer was designed to look like a French person (think for example furina) and did the performance as she did in 2.4 if you recall, would not only not make sense, but it would be insulting to Chinese People (who like Africans are more succeptible to racism and whitewashing)

Tbh, this isnt as much of a big deal as people make it out to be. I always say this 1) its a fictional game 2) if you dont like it , dont play it. 3) and let the company cook. I stopped play multiple games, bcuz i didnt like character designs, kits, state of the game, where it was headed. Unistalling is easy to do. Admittedly sometimes i did it prematurely and didnt let the game devs cook, and i redownloaded. [SPOILERS]- most likely only 2 tribes are gonna be "black" just due to geography. And how skin works. 1- the savanna tribe (Xilonen) 2- the volcano tribe ( Iansan) most other characters might have a little tan on their skins. Just due to mating. You cant please everyone, i am sure most of these same "why isnt this character tanned?" dont play Dehya, Cyno, Sethos or Xinyan Im sure that due to all Natlan past wars, its population dipped. So it makes sense tanned+ untanned = slighlty tanned. And throughout generations the it probably stopped at lightly tanned.🤷‍♂️

Sword bearers during that time period stayed at the camp with the local lords and didn't step on a field of battle. Most actual scholars believe that his story is inconclusive due to the following; no records of him fighting in battle, no record of receiving any training in Japanese martial arts or receiving the official title of samurai. Per the recounting from the Mitsuhide troops he was captured during the Honnoji incident unarmed, outside of conflict, and offered no resistance. He was then returned to Christian Missionaries that he was traveling with. In a series based around maintaining some historical accuracy (just like Genshin' claim at being culturally accurate) it would have been better to have the character be a point of contact similar to Da Vinci from previous games.

Hence why the history is inconclusive because it's limited. The sword he received was ceremonial as described in texts from oral recounting of the era. The things that you're stating as being factual are considered to be speculations made by authors, mainly Thomas Lockley, that have a habit of framing speculations to look like facts because it sells books. Also gets you Netflix $. Lockley himself stated that his framing in the 2019 narrative novel were assumptions based off 13 pages of source material. He took those pages and extrapolated them into a roughly 480 page narrative. The best documents to look at are from Luis Frois, The Oda Nobunaga Encyclopedia (1999) and the letadas diar iirc.

the problem is moreso for the "west african" portion of natlan which natlan is equally inspired by. We DO have Iansan which is black, but most of the drama is centred around the fact that a portion of the NPCs and Ororon are clearly "inspired" by this demographic but lack an adaquate skin tone. For africans, this is something that would likely be harmful due to the historic hate towards their skin tone, so to see it extend into a game, probably deserves some backlash.

it seems like people really dont know what boycott means. just because you play the game and DONT spend money isnt boycotting. its to stop interacting with the game as a whole. I would also like to point out that this has been going on from the beginning. Monstadt itself is mostly based on Germany but most of the names aren't German like: Klee, Venti, Diluc and Fischl. And anything else that resembles Germany is alcohol and the building structure ... and that's it (or that are at least the things that stick out the most without reading the books or anything else, as a casual player). And ofc i am not saying that representation for this specific culture is as 'impotant' or 'necessary' as representing cultures that are SO different and, for many players, something they have never seen before and also paying attention to the history of those cultures. It is very important to normalize differences in the community and educate ppl about them. I'd also like to point out that the most effort that has been put in representation has been in liyue, for example they do the lantern rite every year and i do appreciate them celebrating it but why not do that for the rest of the cultures they have? Why not bring the windbloom festival back and make it a permanent thing? Or Kusunali's birthday? I am not sure if that would cause any problems (please tell me if it does), but these festivities would give them opportunity to show the cultures more. Another thing i really enjoy in Fontaine for example was the casual french they brought into the dialog. It would be so much fun if that were the case for every region and Archon quest, now ik there are specific words and names of items that follow that theme, but imagen how funny it would be to casually do an event in monstadt and then someone went :"Potzblitz" or "Wir sind nicht aus Zucker" it would be hilarious😂😂. Or what abt different accents? Ik there are a lot of npc's with for example a British accent, but why is it only them? Is there any problem it would cause if playable characters had accents? Just imagine a playable character with like a light French accent or Australian or even African. It would bring those characters to life even more. But we all know it will never happen so those things are just me being delusional.

Olorun here isa Yoruba GOD who is still worshipped and guess what hyv did? Made him a white twink and even butchered his name to 'Ororun'. Mavuika is based off of Mahuika who is a Maori Fire deity who is again.....black. Xilonen is the Aztec godess of agriculture and they made her brazilian with barely any skin colour. Mualani is a Hawaiian name and she barely had any tan😭. Chasca is the name of an Incan goddess, what did they do to her? Made her not even a shade darker than furina. Kinich is the sun god in Maya culture. Literally EVERY single character is based off of real life deities and hoyoverse couldn't respect them. If they really wanted to make them all white then they should have gone for atleast normal names in the cultures and NOT disrespect gods. They should atleast have the sense to listen to their VA's ands their community, not even the Chinese and Japanese community is happy with them. Literally even the IGN reported this controversy and even people who never played Genshin are talking about it. What are you saying if in Japanese and China people love the characters and look at the global trailer it has 322k vs 17k and on Twitter Japan all the characters pass the 100K do you think 56k signatures against 70 million players will make any difference? They have already marketed the characters and their official designs. Also, seeing the atmosphere of Natlan, it is similar to Latin America in the 2000s, where reggaeton and urbanity were popular, graffiti, tight clothing, pixels as mascots, you know that games like KOF 2002 were popular in Mexico. and colombia and argentina, peru.
