As a Chinese whose first language is Cantonese, Spencer's pronunciation is better than mine. His ability to decipher characters that he doesn't know is also incredible. The most trouble he has is when dealing with characters with multiple meanings.

北斗 is the Big Dipper. When it means "fight", it would be pronounced as the forth tone. But in this phase, it is pronounced as the third tone. Beidou is a captain, she uses the Big Dipper to navigate. I thought that could the reason of the name.

On Beidou's Hangout, the meaning of Beidou's name was likened to death. Beidou is a star from Big Dipper, and the game explained that the 'Beidou star' is an omen of death, which was used by the game as her character trait, an omen/harbringer of death.

Notes: Spencer mispronounced the intonation of Liyue 璃月, as Li(3) Yue(4), when it should actually be Li(2) Yue(4). Spencer is right that this character 术 is commonly pronounced as Shu(4). But Zhu(2) is also correct. Certain Chinese characters can be written the same way but pronounced in different ways dependent on context. For example: 藏 is Zang(4) in 道藏经 and Cang(2) in 躲藏. 行 is Xing(2) in 行走 and Hang(2) in 银行. 给 is Gei(3) in 给我 and Ji(2) in 给予. 斗 pronounced as Dou(4) does indeed mean "Fight" but in the case of 北斗 is pronounced as Bei(2) Dou(3), and Dou(3) means "dipper". 桃 is indeed "Peach" but in this case, 胡桃 actually means Pecan, a kind of nut. In some regions, Hu Tao is commonly used interchangeably with 核桃 He(2) Tao(2) to mean "Walnut" but in mainland China, the nomenclature is to use 核桃 He(2) Tao(2) for Walnut. Ning 凝 is commonly used in the phrase 凝固 Ning(2) Gu(4) to mean solidify or coagulate. 绯 Fei(1) in Yanfei means a deep shade of red.

I think it would be very interesting to examine how some of the locations are pronounced ( and why they are named so ) Say Fontane , which in the Chinese version of the game are named " 楓丹 " , and very very likely based upon the French town of Fontainebleau which is first widely known among Chinese via an early 20th century contemporary poet's travel journal / log published in the 20's where he termed the town " 楓丹白露 " - as you might had guess the translation is highly literally poetic and the name of the town remain since even after so many changes to official and unofficial translation of cities and towns around the world , Fontainebleau steadfast remain 楓丹白露 ( which by literal and poet form ) it means - red Maples upon white ( in Chinese that mean clear ) dew -

I literally no zilch Chinese now (I'd been learning it in the past but I basically no nothing now it's been many years since I did it) but if I hear the pronunciation once I can usually nail it, sometimes it takes a couple more tries. (I'm Korean and a lot of our words are based off Chinese so yeah)

Baizhu 白术 is actually a kind of traditional chinese medicinal material.And the character is a doctor. That makes sense why it is pronounced differently. 术 is usually "shu" not "zhu". But for 白术, it is "zhu".

瑶 (yao) actually means beautiful jam in ancient time. The one Spanser talked about is 摇. The left part is little different, and they pronounce the same. With some changes on the left part, there are at least 5 frequently used characters pronounced the same as "yao".

You missed a couple that were drip marketed about a week ago; Gaming 嘉明 Xianyun 闲云 If I got anything from the video is that the second one is related to cloud (which makes a lot of sense as she is the human form of an adepti (probably a Chinese cultural thing) named cloud retainer According to the wiki the first is Cantonese but I don’t know what the difference between that and the Chinese spoken in the video. If I had to guess probably a dialect or some regional variation.
@notyou9061
@notyou9061 5 ай бұрын
The first one is said 'Jiaming' in mandarin, but according to Gaming's local dialect (Cantonese), it's said 'Gaming' (I guess it's kinda like the difference between a British and American accent?) As for Cloud Retainer, the second character does mean cloud. Her full name means resting/idle cloud.

@@kevkev9779 I wouldn't say German and English, honestly, since Cantonese and Mandarin use similar characters in the same way (mostly), just with different pronunciations. For example, I can read and understand Cantonese from Mandarin but not German from English. Although I do agree that they're probably more different than American - British English.

@@notyou9061 Standard chinese or written Cantonese? I’m assuming u mean standard, in which case that’s not really Cantonese. The only reason u say you can “understand” written cantonese is because the written language is meaning-based rather than sound based, and it’s easier to understand meaning rather than sounds Plus “standard” chinese based on mandarin and that forces cantonese to be written in mandarin at the expense of Cantonese (and every other chinese language for that matter) I only used the german/english example to illustrate how vastly different the chinese languages are. cause if english was written in “standard germanic,” then “i like reading books” (which would be deemed improper by this hypothetical germanic society) would be written as “Ich lese gern Bücher” (english word for word: I read gladly books) Same with chinese “i like reading books” 「我喜歡讀書」 vs 「我鍾意讀書」 “I really like to eat ice cream” 「我真的很喜歡吃冰淇淋」 vs 「我真係好鍾意食雪糕」 “Give me an umbrella, it’s raining right now” 「給我一把雨傘,現在正在下雨」 vs 「畀一把遮我,而家喺落緊雨」 (Sorry if the mandarin translations r wrong, i only speak Cantonese not mandarin) Assuming you only know mandarin, you know what 我 真 食 子 讀書 一把 and 落mean without doubt, but you probably can’t understand the rest without either Cantonese and/or a bit of classical Chinese knowledge Same with Cantonese. Because of how chinese language education works and the push of mandarin by the ccp, we would recognized the characters, but we would also say that 冰淇淋 喜歡 的 很 吃 雨傘 and 現在 (with their mandarin meanings) are not native Cantonese words Like, just because literate Japanese speakers and Korean speakers who know hanja can recognize the characters, does not make them similar to chinese. Mandarin and Japanese r like english and french. Mandarin and Cantonese r like english and german. They’re more distinct than what people think and it’s really frustrating when people devalue cantonese as a “dialect” Anyways, this is just a long winded and charged way of telling people to stop referring to the various chinese languages as dialects.
@notyou9061
@notyou9061 5 ай бұрын
@@kevkev9779 First, I can understand a very limited amount of Cantonese because I know a few people who speak it, and can draw some similarity in pronunciation, though not too much. I think one problem is that the translations you got for mandarin are often inaccurate. When reading your sentences, I could only understand the Cantonese versions. It would actually be more like: 「給我一把雨傘,現在正在下雨」 vs. 「给我一把雨伞,现在正在下雨」 Also, I don't consider the word “dialect” as a bad thing. It is a fact that Cantonese is a dialect of the overarching language group of "Chinese", just as much as it is a fact that Mandarin is also a dialect, as they are both regional differences in a larger language group. I do apologize if my wording was bad though, it can be annoying when people inaccurately describe your language (Personally, I hate when people start yelling about me speaking "Japanese" when I'm speaking Chinese, though I understand that it's not exactly the same scenario).
