The US federal trade commission is only going after Hoyoverse because 1: they make a lot of money that leaves the US economy, and 2: they recently laid off a bunch of overseas workers. I don't see why lootboxes and crates and packs aren't in the same category as gacha, save for the fact that they don't actually make as much money as gacha games because gacha games sell husbandos and waifus instead of things like weapon skins.

The only difference is most of the time crates and packs gives you more bang for your buck than a character in a gacha and you reach pity faster, but it's still predatory nonetheless. If gachas are to be scrutinized, then so shall crates, packs, and lootboxes. Slap a price with real money on all of them.

FTC cracking down on lootboxes and gacha games is a good thing. Problem is they aren't cracking down on these, they're singling out Hoyoverse, a chinese developer. Meanwhile they completely ignore publishers like EA and 2K who are based in the US that also sell gambling to kids in the form of sports games. Might i add that EA and 2K have been doing this shit way before Hoyoverse and many other gacha games.

Hoyo fired EN translators because they SUCKED BALLS in their job. They litterally mistranslated a lot of stuff in the Natlan Archon Quest by litteally changing the meaning of a lot of stuff, they mistranslated the Sumeru AQ title back in the Travail teaser, as well the prequel manga in Chapter 0 (or 1, anyway Vanessa's chapter). They didn't fire any other employee besides them, or if they did, the vast majority is still translators.

This isn't done "for players" or anything, this is just the US going after popular Chinese products out of spite and financial jealousy. As for Tiktok, everyone knows the reason the US is going after it is for "political" reasons because the US wants to have complete control, aka ability of censorship and monitoring, of all media. Look at all the popular media, the US has their grubby hand in all of them, Tiktok is the only one still free from them. the only gacha game i played before genshin was pokemon masters EX and in it getting a general pool 5 stars doesn't reset the pity count and when you reach pity they show you a list of all the 5 stars available in the banner and you pick whoever you want. you can imagine how devastated i was when i lost my first 50/50 in genshin lmao

Seeing Hoyo needing to go through this with the US FTC just made me realize Kuro's genius of using the same shit 50/50 but having a twist that can save their asses if what the US FTC is doing is a blanket for all gacha games. First having a guaranteed weapon banner unlike any of the big 3 hoyo games already sets it up in a way that they are just selling the weapon for a max roughly around $165 or 12,800 lunites/astrites per copy at 80 pity. Then the 50/50 issue of just being a chance to get the character can technically be easily countered by the fact that they do have character copies(2) that are available for exchange, granting that even if players still need to have the base character it still doesn't take away the fact that the game has a guaranteed way of getting a "copy" of the character

The 50/50 system is trash because it forces a third of your 5 stars (on average) to be one of 5-6 mid/powercrept characters. Which feels horrible especially when you’re accumulating duplicates of the standard banner characters.

If US court wins or settles this case, this could potentially shift other games that have US servers as well. Since it will set a precedence for other games to be sueable. Most if not all gacha has virtual currency and many even unguaranteed pulls, so I'm not sure they're going just Hoyo or a blanket for all of gacha genre.

Just a reminder that some gacha games (most of the ones I've played prior to Genshin) didn't even have a guarantee system. Dragon Ball Legends is all pure chance with no guarantee whatsoever. A friend of mine litterally spend up to 1000 euros just to get LL Super Vegito back in 1st anni. Genshin was the first gacha I'v played that had a guarantee pity system. I'm sure it wasn't the first ever with that system, but was definitely the first I played.

All Gacha's are deceiving. Genshin's has been the same for years, years and years, and doesn't from the article and such, it doesn't seem like the rates were changed at all, like that one incident, I forget the game, how the rates were changed by the devs. But Genshin isn't such, most, or I'd believe everyone knows Genshin has a 50/50 system. So there is nothing confusing about it. All of them are predatory. Every single one. Hell I'd argue HSR is WORSE then Genshin right now in terms of it's pred tactics. But cause Genshin is the BIGGEST, course it'd be effected more. I feel like this will cause a domino effect, in which either more will get targeted, or something will change to help players better. Tbh, most ppl just calculate the money needed to spend on something before buying it. So only ppl who are literary kids or ppl who has too much money they doesn't care enough to do so. So saying trading money for a set of currency mainly for that is wrong. The reason why and I don't see anyone talking about it is the flexible that made-up currency can buy. U don't want to re-enter your bank page everytime you want to buy. Make-up currency is there to help you buy more things with just a press of a button. That means, the developer can sell you more things. This is when the PREDATORY practices step in. So, does make-up currency is bad? Yes and no, yes because of how it is very easy to use, No because it opens up for predatory practises to prey on you.

As a precursor: I'm an adult. I've spent money on Genshin (fully aware of how much I was spending, and what I was getting for it) I genuinely think EVERY gatcha game is a scam, just like casinos. After spending somewhere in the ballpark of $500 within a few months, I realized how ridiculous it was to dump funds into something I didn't NEED to. Therein lies the problem for a lot of people out there: they don't know when to stop, nor do they understand how dumb it is to spend money on what is essentially pretty pixels. Genshin DOES market to kids/teens, who are far more likely to throw money into a game and NOT understand just how much they're wasting. The concept of money to a child is moot. No matter what action Hoyo takes, kids can and will find ways to pivot around the 'rules'. Just like porn sites, etc.

@@justanotherguy3294 you forgot to account for bonus gems depending on which bundles are included and intentionally short changing some deals so people are forced to buy other uneven packs and still be stuck with leftover gems unless they mix it with other sources to zero it out. It’s purposely annoying on a game that has both character and weapon banners suffering 50/50 and requiring multiple fails to gurantee with only its weapon banners finally caving in to shrink it by one instead of just making it fking 100% The funny thing is, any ‘lost of revenue’ by removing the 50/50 on weapon banners mean Jack shite if most people would rather skip the weapon banner once or even three times on reruns if they are being taxed suxx’d hard on chasing characters already. This is why I like Kuro games way of handling because despite Wuwa also using 50/50 on Just character and 100% on weapon, the fact you get way more currency in the field, have way better cost efficient bundles and cost a whopping 10’less pulls on both soft and hard cap, it means that mihoyo could easily match that but continues to choose not to and rather just do means to push the FOMO such as purposely releasing lantern rite pulls intentionally only during rerun banners and immediately after the double limited banner runs instead of splitting them to just have the dps runner share its spot in phase 2’with cilantro instead to give an appeasement for chasing archon to goad people to go for cilantro after being refueled by those 20 pulls.

@BladeSerph that 100% weapon guarantee is such a pull saver. I have Godly luck too! Pulled 2 Jinshi weapon in 10 pulls at 33 pity and Yinlin’s rectifier at 36 pity! No doubt Genshin’s very scummy especially on their weapon banner. Easy solution is to not spend money. That’s why i buy monthly subs and pioneer podcast on Wuwa since day 1 because i like their company. People just need to learn accountability or be a better parent. If you buy something like a subscription for a currency and a skin requires currency it is *not* free. Another example: Twitch Prime is *not* free. You spend a monthly fee for Amazon Prime and a monthly Twitch subscription. If you stop doing so, you get neither.

It's not really free. If you divide $4.99 by 90*30+300 you'll get the unit price, then times that to skin price. It'll be $4.46 with discount and $5.46 without. Still very cheap compared to buying outright, but you'll have to buy at least 9 subs ($44.91) with discount, or 11 subs ($54.89) without to get 1 skin. Which is the similar price for the skin already, so it's pretty much the same price the moment you decide to buy a skin, whether it's real money or in-game money.
