Oh that's a great point! The wording "pure of heart" makes it seem more sus than it actually is. It's more so how selfless someone is. Paimon, especially in later game, is incredibly attached to the traveler and would absolutely put them above everyone else.

I love that Baizhu acknowledges he appears sus to people. I absolutely loved Baizhu when he was first introduced. The theories about him were always good to hear, and now I'm thrilled to have Baizhu. He's a good guy, and admits to being selfish: he isn't willing or wanting to throw his life away for others but he does want to save people. That whole "if I encounter a life deserving of being saved, why shouldn't I?"...implies that if he doesn't deem someone deserving of being saved, he'll charge them, do what he can without using Changsheng, or according to his demo...just whoop ass. It's not like Baizhu wants to stop death for everyone. Just get rid of disease. Doctors are meant to try and cure. His quest has been my favorite, I hope there's a second part and that he achieves immortality.
@aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa922 Жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting! For Baizhu's introduction, Qiqi talked about him in a positive light, but was ripped off. Part of me suspects Baizhu might have, who knows why. Maybe in case he fails and goes, so she won't have to eternally suffering in trying to remember him? Or, whatever it is. But it's so interesting, because it does mean he cares. I mean he constantly humors her, a lot. Cocomilk and going out to do something she wants despite being so busy. He probably just has his own reasons for not being able to love her in a way that causes the command to work. I do hope though on a side note he learns to love himself, value his own life. Ahh, but that's rambles on a note. BUT- also worth noting not only in character story but as well as the introduction with his Drip, its shown Baizhu constantly puts up a front when possible so others don't have to fuss about him. Even when he's having the worst days with health, it's only him and Changsheng. He doesn't want to let others in, others help him. The only way we would have known was solely Changsheng snitching on him. He constantly puts himself at an arms length, not letting himself be... loved. He has all this love and care he wants to give but refuses to receive it. another thing is, Baizhu has also basically lost everyone important in his early life. His parents to sickness, his Master who was also a dear guardian to the contract and going too far. It's all very put together and... ahh, I can't wait for more. I truly do love him a lot. He's so, intriguing and sweet. Though, even back then, when assumed to be sus, I loved him. I'm quite fond of villains or morally grey characters, even if they aren't popular. They just have so much to offer, to inspect. And what is fiction if not to explore every aspect of emotions, of actions, of things... Thank you for the video! Very beautiful btw :D

Alright, as a Chinese, I feel obligated to explain the reference you mentioned 27:52. In Chinese mythological stories, it is said that in ancient times, there were ten suns in the sky. A hero named Houyi used his bow and arrow to shoot down nine of the suns, allowing people on earth to live a normal life. Later, an adeptus gave him an elixir of immortality, which could make him live forever and ascend to become an immortal. Houyi's wife, Chang'e, was a kind-hearted woman, everybody loved her. Houyi did not want to leave his wife, so he asked her to keep the elixir. For various reasons, Chang'e herself took the elixir and then flew to the moon, never being able to reunite with Houyi. People missed her very much and held a festival every year to remember her, which is the origin of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (also celebrated in Japan, Korea, Vietnam and other Asian countries). The Japanese legend "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" is an adaptation of this story. In the Japanese version, there is a little girl named Kaguya-hime. She also flew to the moon, but leaving the elixir of immortality for the people on earth who missed her.

there were couple versions of why chang'e took the medicine, one being that she could not reject the temptation of immortality, so she took it for herself and became immortal. Another version was that there were thiefs after the medicine, and try to take it when houyi was not home. Chang'e who did not want the medicine to be eaten by criminals ate it before they had the opportunity, her body became very light so she floated up, until she arrived at the moon. Not wanting to be further apart from her husband, she choose to stay there.

What's so interesting to me about this story quest is how the idea of self sacrifice is conflicted idea rather than the usual moral high ground it carries. It really forces you to confront whether Baizhu wanting to live and going though many means to achieve immortality is truly selfish in any capacity. Genshin also seems to push this idea that Baizhu is fighting his (and his predecessors) inherent nature of self sacrifice to stop and wonder why their life was tradeable when the lives of those they saved were invaluable. And though he does benefit from immortality, this quest tore away the idea of a moral high ground attached to self sacrifice for me because I'm left wondering is it truly more noble to pay the ultimate price to save others instead of living against all odds to save others? Compared to a character like Nahida, who's immediate nature is similar to that of Baizhu where they both are compassionate and giving, Nahida is very quick to give what she has for the greater good. As a God, she feels she must prioritize her people over herself and part of her role had demanded this sacrifice, some necessary (like when she purged the forbidden knowledge) and other times reckless (like when she is ready to lose herself to restore Apep). Baizhu on the other hand is still sacrificial but only when he deems necessary. At other times, he works towards smart work arounds and the ultimate solution of immortality. To me the story quest really forces the player to consider why that recklessness to pay the ultimate sacrifice, like nahida was ready to do, is so selfless when Baizhu's unwilliness to follow in the footsteps of his processors can be viewed as more selfish solely because he can benefit. Does Baizhu not deserve to return himself the same compassion he so readily returns to everyone around him? And does Nahida not deserve the same? I think these are complicated questions because of the different roles the two characters fill and their self sacrifice is ultimately an admirable and compassionate thing. But the writers did a very good job of making us realize that wanting to save yourself doesn't need to be a selfless or selfish thing. It can be an act of kindness towards yourself and everyone around you.
@GLoLChibs Жыл бұрын
There's that, but Baizhu also doesn't want anyone else to have to use the contract and sacrifice themselves. That's pretty selfless of him and self sacrificing- he's determined to either become immortal to keep others from the Fate of his predecessors or die trying.

I believe Dottore ("Zandik") and Baizhu are foils of each others' character. It's a very interesting way of mirroring morals in this world. Dottore learned medicine to hold power over everyone, and baizhu learned medicine to keep crooks like him out of medicine. Dottore is and will always be my favorite character, but I pulled for baizhu for the sake of the doctor train going. I do think Genshin is a casual game but with a lot to discuss and share. I take breaks from it time to time cuz of work/life etc, but I never say “I quit the game.” I jump back when there is stuff I’m interested in. So I don’t get the mentality of Tectone/Mtashed when they kinda claim “I quit Genshin, so the game is bad.” Three years of Genshin, I found awesome content creators all across the world: Dish, Rawfler, Ashikai, Bran etc. Yes they grind views by providing positive reviews on games, but you need actual passion for the game to make your content positive enough for the viewers to appreciate. Why can’t we just grind the positive side of things instead of keep talking sht of a game so more people can pore their salt in other’s face? I work hard and tired everyday, and the least thing I expect from a content creator is negativity, I just want a good 30-60 minutes of game time and watch some streams on bed. Awesome video essay Dish! Your voice is calm and smooth as ever! Keep up the great work!

What I love about how "nefarious" Baizhu is at first glance is that he's a walking symbol for the Rod of Asclepius, the symbol of health and the allusion to the Greek god of healing of which its named after. This very symbol is often confused with the symbol Caduceus, which has two snakes instead of one. Caduceus, as opposed to representing Asclepius and healing, is the staff of Hermes, whom we're all familiar with in name. He's the god of speed, but he also is known to be the god of thieves, god of cunning, and a trickster character in myth and portrayal. Fun fact, Hermes even stole the sacred cow of Apollo lol. In real life, people confuse Caduceus for the Rod of Asclepius all of the time, but Baizhu as the walking symbol of Aclepius is confused for Caduceus spiritually in Genshin. It's fascinating how they managed to ride this line for this long.

I really liked this vid, you made clear the important points his story quest was making. one thing that doesn’t really have a canon basis but something I like to interpret anyway is why baizhu makes himself sound suspicious-he outright tells paimon she shouldn’t trust him unquestioningly. the reason? imo, just to amuse himself. a parallel to this: albedo is also a genius, professional, easy enough to get along with but generally feels a bit distant/takes a long time to know more deeply. and during the 2.3 shadows amidst snowstorms event, everyone was like “omg there’s no way the albedo who teased the traveler at the end was the real one, he’d never joke around like that” when albedo has definitely done that before. again, for his own amusement

5:08 to further expand on this, we often take a liking on characters that are transparent enough, even if they are evil. This is true in movies, books and games. Sometimes this mentality carries over in real life. We don't like characters with a dubious personality because we ourselves don't like dubious people. This is why our first impression to Baizhu is heavily negative because we ourselves never want a guy who is seemingly "fake". Dottore, on the other hand, is unhinged, arrogant, and is loaded in confidence with his skills, even if it meant doing the most immoral and unethical thing imaginable. He never uses a facade to make seemingly acceptable decisions, and even if he does, it's so light that his true self still shows (e.g. when he confronted Tighnari about Haypasia). As such, we admire their openness, even if it means he's an evil prick. TLDR is we want arrogant, sick, yet honest bad guys.

Yeah, that's also why hypocrites usually get more hate than openly bad people. Just because hypocrites fail to follow the same moral beliefs they ask others to follow. At least hypocrites usually try. But we still get angrier at the one that didn't meet our expectations. (It's also one of the reasons cancel culture is often aimed at the wrong person or blown out of proportion, but I digress.)

Ik this may sound harsh but, my pet peeve in Genshin is that SOME of the community tend to make up a barely released Genshin character their own personality. Genshin does very well written characters with their own unique individualized personality & Hoyoverse was very clever to clear things up with Baizhu! It's like the saying "dont judge a book by its cover" & its disappointing to see some well liked Genshin characters misinterpret. This is my opinion & i understand some may disagree; all this to say is Mrs Dish did her homework & so did Hoyoverse!

Though I actually haven't played his quest yet, just listening to videos like this and figuring out stuff for myself, Baizhu is my favorite character. The way he is making the loop "I will die by healing other" & "but I must save others who can't save themselves " by continuing to study immortality is intriguing considering some characters mention immortality as a not so great sense of being and others trying to grasp at it forcefully.

I always find Baizhu hard to like... Even his weird design. But oh boy was the story quest amazing. It's nothing about Ayu or his family or the things happening in the story that made it soo interesting. It's the direct philosophy clashes. I think most of us have noticed how Baizhu directly contradicts HuTao's and the funeral parlor's philosophies about inevitabilities of death. And how Baizhu's philosophy is also tied strong with the funeral parlor director family tree. HuTao's story quest was strong about her philosophies back then. She constantly mentioned the importance of seeing death as an inevitable part of life just like birth and remembering it in a positive light rather than considering any talk about death as a taboo. But Baizhu's philosophy goes beyond just HuTao. He directly contradicts the philosophies we learn about the Archons too. Liyue's quest talks about erosion while Inazuma quest rejects Eternity. Sumeru quest also talks about the next generation and the fragility of a person's identity... Their memories. As well as it hits towards the idea of a "fate" existing. Baizhu is a mortal who contradicts all of these ideas. His intentions are good... And his philosophies are worth considering... But it's STILL sketchy AF

since i play this game w chinese VAs, i thought i'd mention a small translation difference. instead of referring to jiangli (the wife and fellow disciple of baizhu's) by her name, baizhu calls her qian bei (sunbae in korean) which is a term used for older/more senior people in the same study/major. this means jiangli was the more senior disciple to her and baizhu's master (hu tao's great uncle) and would've been more likely to take on the changsheng contract had she not gotten into that argument w their master over sacrificing himself for jiangli's beloved/husband. this also adds more weight to her compliments to baizhu for so quickly understanding the nature of the poison on jialiang's body. just wanted to add this little tidbit! thank u for the video dish

A very good breakdown of the quest and the character. I pointed at Baizhu the second I saw him when I started playing in 1.3 and said "him. that's the character for me." and I was willing to embrace him no matter his degree of moral greyness. I'm a little sad he doesn't have a bigger role in the story or lore...*yet*. But I think that will change, due to some Changsheng lore I've noticed that I haven't seen anyone else pick up on yet (lore nerd essay incoming): The Echoes of an Offering artifact set from the Chasm tells the tale of two adepti, one named an "Herblord" with an unspecified form and the other implied to be a koi, and connects them to Chenyu Vale and Qiaoying Village (regions we've heard namedropped a few times in-game that supposedly connect Liyue and Fontaine). Changsheng is referred to as an Herblord in the Baizhu story cutscene, so I believe the Herblord mentioned in the artifact set lore is her, and she's simply forgotten she's an adeptus due to her lapse in strength. (I have no solid evidence for the identity of the fish adeptus but my personal theory is that it may be Madame Ping, as the artifact lore mentions moving to Liyue Harbor, and the bottom of her outfit in the cutscene flashbacks we have to her youth look like the tail of a fish to me. "Ping" in Chinese is also 萍 which means duckweed (a water plant) and wiktionary lists it as symbolic of a 'floating' existence - possibly indicative of both her adeptus name, Streetward Rambler, and her adeptal form as a fish? But I admit I'm in crack theory territory on that one so take that with a heavy grain of salt.) Anyways, it's my hope/belief that as they fill in the map connecting areas to Fontaine we'll eventually get Qiaoying Village and Chenyu Vale, and that they might come with more Baizhu and Changsheng lore and possibly some involvement for them in something like an interlude quest.

Baizhu was orphaned young as a child, he witnessed a plague kill his parents and his entire village. His master and Hu Tao's grandfather had to contain it, Baizhu was the only one who lived. Baizhu most likely has had survivor's guilt growing up, and he desperately cherishes his community after once watching it bloodily fall apart at a young age. His sincere care for others in Liyue was depicted in a web event, he made the most minor things tailored for specific people (like beauty cream for Yunjin and a flower soup for Shenhe who kept eating herbs straight ). Baizhu does not let people love or care for him even when he can't move in bed and vomits blood, but he pours his heart out for every individual he meets equally :'D (his unwillingness to receive help and love is most likely where that insincerity comes from when he tells Qiqi he loves her, he doesn't let her love him back).

Baizhu was very reluctant to fully explain anything to the Traveler either. He only partially explained in the quest with Chengsheng's nudging. Even in his voicelines, he frequently lies about his well-being and brushes off his past as nothing notable or interesting 😭

I always loved Baizhu and always preferred giving him benefit of the doubt. I'm so happy I always stuck to that. Thank you for this Dish!

he is my favorite character with kaeya. I liked hm before his story came out but now that's out i love his character even more, it's not pure good or evil and is very complicated and conflictual. It's a pity that was released when everyone attention was elsewhere with star rail and zelda, i hope when chenyu vale is released he will got more attentio since his story teased a lot of that area.

Their is a lil tidbit you likely missed, (and sadly I can’t find where the post was) on one of his marketing their was a quote from a torn out (and missing) peice of qiqi’s journal. In it it went on how Baizhu was suspicious to qiqi and that she knew he was hiding somthing from her so she was writing it down to remember. So it seems that Baizhu activily tears out pages on him (or someone dose at least), witch is quite strange because it dose not seem he is against qiqi knowing about his pursuits. I’m a Baizhu fan and generally overall I think he is a good hearted man and doctor. But I do think their is somthing more about him, it might not be completely good but still would be in his pursuits or not actively against his pursuits in healing.

I love Baizhu so much and since i saw him i just knew i'm gonna defend him everytime someone says he's evil and doesn't care about Qiqi. His storyquest proved it. He just melts my heart 😭😭 (funfact Baizhu on my acc is a dps with c2 and yae miko's weapon 😋)

12:00 Baizhu’s a witch doctor. His name always sounds like Bayou to me which I associate with Louisiana and hoodoo, voodoo practices. Baizhu seems to fit right in with this with his herbal remedies, mystic deals with a snake and a zombie friend. But whatever, it’s probably because of your explanation instead. Weird co-incidence though, and it bums me out that no-one ever seens to mention this thing that seems so obvious. Probably because there’s not much to say about it than what I just did!

i thought he was kinda sus two years ago because we didn't know that much but with time i just thought he was a doctor who wanted the power of immortality. a bit controversial but it felt possible and not that sus? i just saw him as a good dottore if you will and i still think that way. there's the crazy delusional one with no morals and a cold heart and a good one that us also a bit delusional about immortality but for the sake of saving others. i think genshin likes to have a bunch of parallels between characters so im always checking everyone to see if i find hints on important lore bits.

This is not a hate comment, but I played his quest in JPN dub. The voice adds up the sincerity of their voices. He doesn't sound sus but sounded like he cared a lot.

Funny you mentioned Bai Suzhen. She was a 1000 year old snake spirit/demon and had a friend in another much younger green snake spirit. The doctor ended up saving Suzhen in his past life. Suzhen waited a very long time for him reincarnate, and two got merried but he didn't know her true form. Discovering her true form he died from shock, Suzhen steals a immortality herb and saves him, and bunch stuff happens until story ends happily.❤ Baizhu definitely the doctor and Changsheng is Bai Suzhen. While Hu Tao oh boy...might be the misguided monk that pestered Suzhen and her husband in legend. Thats rough.😅

Ever since I was a kid I always wished I could take the pain away from others in exchange for inflicting it on myself. I really relate to Baizhu in that way of wanting to help people. Seeing that idea reflected in a genshin is really awesome because I feel like I've never seen in before in media in general.

I find it interesting that both Nahida and Baizhu have both spoken about the moon and them both being Dendro. Nahida states that she is the moon (probably in a metaphorical sense) and Baizhu says the only way forward is towards the moon. I don’t know if they are related just an observation that’s interesting
@sureindubitably3771 Жыл бұрын
Baizhu sounds like that one gay friend in EN VA...... also my favorite quote is the end of the cutscene Changsheng: who knows how many more people shall take on this contract? Baizhu: None.... This contract..... Will end with me _chills, literal chills_

I didn’t like baizhu before his story quest but after that I really liked him because it’s a surpsinglu unique take on him. Pursing immortality is typically seen as a selfish thing, but baizhu is doing it for a selfless reason. Additionally I liked how they didn’t do the “baizhu is chronically ill so he is pursuing immortality to save himself” cuz it feels like quite an ableist trope. Like, “curing” the disability. I think what you do with your life is what matters, no matter how long, and I think that’s a better message than the former one. So yea! I’m a baizhu fan
