It can't be pulled out of nowhere for shock value. Doing things for shock value is crap writing. Generally speaking, tho, making the audience ask themselves "but would they do this" aka "who are they actually?" is part of the key to a good story, Every scene should bring conflict that makes the readers 8and the character, though not explicitly) ask themselves "who is this character", because that's sign of a good inner conflict. That is, the "internal pieces" of the characters (so to speak, though there's neuroscience basis for that expression to have actual truuth in it, and I'm not talking about mental illness) that want different things, have different "control theories", and fight for which direction the person should go. Stories are also about who the characters are as people, how they change to reach what they want, how what they want changes; if the answer is certain, then there's much less of a story to tell.
