Gentex Commander Fire Alarm Series Overview

I never really saw all that much on these. Not how they sounded over time, not design changes over time and even the little details that have been added or changed over time. I do really like the Commander. I see it as a cool, simple device.. thats why I like it. Although its not used where i live, I've seen it before on videos and such. Very nice demonstration and information, Grant!

The Gentex Commander 3 is my all time favorite alarm. I just hope that one day Gentex will create some ceiling mounted outdoor devices. Keep up the good work Grant.

Nice video! The Gentex commanders has always been a unique alarm to me. My elementary school had a few commander 2s and 3s. The 2s were on continuous horn while the 3s were on whoop. The rest were SHG's with one outdoor GMS. My local goodwill has some Gentex commanders 3s. Including an outdoor weatherproof commander 3 and then quite a bit of commander 4s. Another thing to mention about the older commander 2s is that they didn't have the notch on the left side. It told you the strobe rating on the bottom like a commander 1. The trim plate had no ridges and some remote strobe versions dident have the fire symbol. Also they only did horn and 2400hz. There wasn't whoop or chime tones at the time. All in all, the Gentex commanders are awesome.

I like the Gentex Commanders! It seems like they still make the fixed 15/75 and 177 Candela versions of the Commander 2 as well as the multi candela commander 3s and 4s.

My elementary school had commander 1s in the first and second buildings but the 3rd had advances. Im pretty sure thou they replaced some of them for 3s later because I think I heard the, during a drill

Also, the commander 1's have some frequency jumpers and pins in the back so you can change from 2/4 wire and continuous/ code 3

Wow nice! Gentex makes pretty high quality stuff and I grew up with commander 1’s. There is no doubt that the Commander 2 is a big step-up in quality from the Commander 1 and ESPECIALLY from the SHG’s with breakable strobes Also gentex does make strobe only commander 2’s. Model is GES24

The updated strobe on that Commander 3 was actually introduced on later model Commander 3s. I have an old Commander 3 that still has the same "style" strobe as the Commander 2 as well as the horizontal dip switches.
