Saw them do the “Free Hand” concert as a teenager in the late 1970’s and I sat there with my jaw on the floor. I’ve been a jazz drummer my whole life so very much into the prog of that age- Peter Gabriel Genesis- King Crimson, Weather Report, Passport, etc.- GG was SO original I never blinked! “Funny Ways” with the 5 man drum solo and their muted but beautiful light show- plus they were SO tight!! Still love them till this day. 🌴😎🥁🌴

Gentle Giant - His Last Voyage Rose in early morning, as the light came through, Searching in the ocean, did what he should do, Seeking not adventure, just a way of life, Sky above turned grey, wind cut like a knife. This was his last voyage, this was his last time. Pulling up the anchor, letting go the rope, Age rules over all things, fate rules over hope. Then as bow was broken, water soon to rise, For they would have nothing, Nature's trust unwise, Through his boat and fortune, not for him that day, If he went to God, for him they would pray, As the tempest thundered, as the storm broke free, Suddenly in darkness, fear there none to see, Visions in his memory, what was meant to be, When the storm was over, nothing could be seen, Life and boat were taken, God knows what it means. Rose in early morning, as the light came through, Searching in the ocean, did what he should do, This was his last voyage, this was his last time. Pulling up the anchor, letting go the rope, Age rules over all things, fate rules over hope.

At 63 years of age, I stopped doing magic mushrooms about 45 years ago. "His Last Voyage" is one of the greatest Gentle Giant songs there is.(Although that is certainly debatable), I guess the visuals are a bit much for me now...it's too "trippy", but I do applaud the efforts to keep their music alive. Gentle Giant should live on forever...just like the Beatles, and we who are now parents should expose our children to this world where imagination was fused with music and the results were often extremely interesting and satisfying.

This is one of the most beatiful pieces of art I've ever heard. After that smooth guitar solo, those gorgeos vocals and the overall composition of the piece as a whole with all the instruments caotically playing in harmony, that ending with a simple echoey guitar hit the hardest after a masterpiece like this was over. I feel like I didn't enjoy this piece enough the first time I heard it. A lot has been changing in my life and as I was sitting against a tree looking at the horizon, all of this I was hearing seemed to make sense. Suddenly it had changed from just a song I've heard to the perfect soundtrack for this moment of peace and hope as my thoughts seetled down and I was immerced in the music and the story it tells. It fascinates me that someone was able to do this, music is just something out of this world to me as someone who struggled to play any instruments and only go really well with vocals and percussion. I don't know how they could come up with this melodies, the bassline communucating with the chords on the piano and the xylophone, it's unreal to me, it seems like contemplating something I have no knowledge to understand but I can still fully appreciate it. I would really like to know all the band member's history. They seem to have a strong influence in jazz and it makes me wonder if they participated in any groups before "Gentle Giant", I can recongnize a bit of jazz influence in the piano playing of a couple of songs but also the drum playing, I might be completely wrong because I have almost no knowledge in music but that's what my ears tell me. At least I can enjoy a piece like this and delve into this soundscape, enjoying every word and aspect, verbal and musical, it's all too great...

Omg! I saw that concert at the PARAMOUNT THEATER too!! To this day one of the BEST concerts I ever saw. I’ll never forgot how it started… they had a big blank screen onstage.. while waiting for them to come onstage all of a sudden an image of the bass drum appeared, then an amp.. a guitar on a stand, a keyboard, cymbal all maybe 10 seconds or so apart… eventually all the bands gear was on that screen… and then it came up and it was The BAND!!! Can’t remember what they opened with but they were INCREDIBLE… they played a couple songs off their new album that had not been released yet: THE MISSING PIECE.. I’ll never forget that show, I was in the center lower level up front. 😊❤

GG's music should be taught everywhere especially to young people, so they can feel the melody, the harmonies, read their lyrics, imagine the musical landscapes that this underrated group has given to humanity. Music is part of mathematics turned into sound. Today, at 64, I feel privileged and honored to belong to a generation that embraced and defends this music because it is part of universal culture.

🌹Ray Shulman, a founding member, with two of his brothers, in the progressive rock band Gentle Giant, died March 30, 2023, at 73. His death was announced by his bandmate and brother, Derek Shulman, today (April 1). Ray Shulman had been battling a long illness, though the specific cause of death wasn’t disclosed. In his Facebook post, Derek Shulman called his brother “my best friend.” He wrote, in part, “Ray really was a genius in so many ways. He was such a kind and caring soul.
