Gentle Giant | "Interview" | 2023 Steven Wilson Remix
Available: bit.ly/3VodrLB
“Interview” was the eighth studio recorded album of Gentle Giant and was released April 23rd 1976. The line up on the album is Derek Shulman, Ray Shulman, Gary Green, Kerry Minnear and John Weathers. The album also has the participation of ‘Sounds’ writer Phil Sutcliffe as the ‘interviewer’.
The band had completed a year of non stop touring throughout Europe and North America promoting the highly successful “Free Hand” album. Despite having no real down time the band felt inclined to write and record the follow up to “Free Hand” without having any time to reflect on its success. This may have influenced both the direction and attitude of the album, hence its somewhat cynical concept. It poked a little satirical fun at the state of the music industry and dissected the way a group’s relationship with the rock press could either help or hinder their career. Stylistically it continued in the vein of their preceding seventh studio album, “Free Hand” released in the year before, in 1975. Featuring a spoken cameo from Sounds writer Phil Sutcliffe, the shape-shifting funk-rock of the title track “Interview” lampooned clichéd rock ‘n’ roll journalism.
Award winning producer and musician Steven Wilson has remixed “Interview” in Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound. The Porcupine Tree guitarist has long been a fan of the band, noting them as a primary influence on his own work. Wilson’s painstaking attention to detail, deep respect for the source material and keen tonal range make the album sound as fresh today as it did on first release.
In addition to the 2023 remixes, the original 1976 stereo mix, original 1976 quad mix, instrumental mixes, and custom visuals for each track are all included in the CD/Blu-ray version.
This video has been remastered and synced to the Steven Wilson Remix. Originally filmed at ITN House in 1976.

John Weathers and Ray Shulman were one of the best rhythm sections of all time.. not just for their sheer talent and groove but for the amazing sound of their instruments... That gold sparkle ludwig kit and precision bass were absolutely fine tuned machines of prog warfare!

They really were. And with very little in the way of drama or ego within the band, especially once Pugwash was in and Phil had left (no offence to Phil or any of Pugwash's predecessors by any means, they were all fab but obviously lineup changes tend to involve tension etc) and they entered the Free Hand era and so forth, it really shows that all the members genuinely had a wonderful time with each other and appreciated each other's talents and skills. John and Ray bounced off each other so well, but the others did too. Their energy at live concerts was so infectious, big grins, smiles, jokes and good times all round. There was no limelight hogging, no nonsense, just a bunch of guys all passionate about music in different ways giving every note their best. I wish I could have seen them in person!

@Tony Komarytska I'd imagine that contemporary comparisons were somewhat uncommon and not always accurate. With GG being made of of musicians with a very broad spectrum of individual influences (for example Kerry Minnear being classically trained, Gary Green being a blues guitarist, Ray being a jazz fan, etc) and therefore a multitude of different styles forming their sound, causing even different songs on the same album to appear to be totally different genres to a layman, so comparisons would have probably seemed a little difficult and some I've seen from articles and posters of the time were definitely amusing. With the benefit of hindsight and the internet it's much easier to ring-fence or quantify things but I can understand why at the time they'd have seemed very unusual. Sometimes when supporting other artists on tour they'd be literally booed off stage! And yet other headliners' fans roared and cheered for GG even more than the act they'd presumably paid to see. A weird one for sure - and part of what I like about them. They were utterly unafraid (especially from Free Hand onwards) to do what they wanted, not what others felt they should.
@Narpets2112
@Narpets2112 Жыл бұрын
@ProblemProductionsLD To be fair, they were bood offstage by Black Sabbath fans, which I've seen give the Outlaws a rude response (it was probably one guy armed with rolls of toilet paper and impeccable aim-he hit Huey's microphone twice with two shots. Huey didn't come back the second time but they were doing their encore by then)

@@axolotl8694 I'm not a great musician, but for what I get it's manly due to the short songs, the interesting complex and mathematic compositions, and essentially to the fact they don't use chord layering of chords that envelop all the music in most prog bands. It's mainly pure piano, guitar and real instruments, not much synthesized sounds and effects.

Your daughters are musically literate and wise in that regard! Gentle Giant is a hard band to digest for people raised on top 40, mindless lyrics and repetition, and with little to no musical skill or understanding. Even emotionally these cats are pretty freaking deep, and it requires the utmost attention and re-listening to capture every detail they have going on all at once.🤯

I have been listening for about two months, and I can proudly say that this is, and will for ever be, my favourite band. So far ahead of everyone else in every respect, even the immortal Frank Zappa. Each track, when heard ten times over, still feels as though you are hearing it for the first time. Truly, Gentle Giant is not merely music, but the auditory equivalent of living literature. Video looks fantastic! (A few audio issues for me: Missing the delay on the end of the vocal in "baaaaand," (2:52). Also thought the final fadeout was a little sloppy...and different. Would've preferred the Hammond to last throughout the Rhodes part at the end, as on the original... Plus a few other minor things that only a GG goon like me would care about - but great to hear this anyway!) 👍 Edit: One thing I DID like: Was to hear that final piano stab at the end of the piano solo (3:56) which was apparently cut off in the original - due to a tape splice, I would guess. That was cool to hear for the first time.

I remember that after the release of "Interview" reviews told that Gentle Giant were clearly passed their creative peak. Another proof of music critics' total and stunning incompetence, as the band was at the top of their game. Personally I would have preferred further development on basis of compositions such as "Design" and "Another Show". However, the band decided to take new paths with Interview's successor "The Missing Piece".

Damn, this is one of the only videos I've seen where John is singing lead vocals live, while drumming. He's ridiculously good. Wish there were more live videos of his lead-oriented songs around, like Aspirations or Isn't It Quiet and Cold. This video is incredible, their energy was top-notch.

Aspirations is sung by Kerry Minnear. John wasn't in the band when they did Isn't It Quiet And Cold. That was Phil Shulman singing. The only other song where John is singing *lead* is "Friends" from Giant For A Day.

Thank you Steven for coaxing some tone out of those drums. 70s was bad for drum tone and what John was playing is harder than it sounds.

What do you mean? As a musician myself It sounds hard, because it is! John 'Pugwash' Weathers is an amazing drummer, and a really cool guy. He makes it look simple.

So glad Ray Wilson remixed this album. The drums were too low in the mix and now they’re louder. Yay! Love GG! Thank you Ray Wilson!

I always thought of this band as a kind of anarchic anti band as nothing they did conformed to anything that anyone else was doing - complete originality, huge skill and very exciting! A one off!!

Derek probably did because everyone thought Kerry's voice wasn't strong enough for live performance even though they liked it.

Is the alto part in the third verse (@ 2:40 "What are your plans...") actually sung by John Weathers on the album? I always thought it was Kerry Minnear that did those vocals. Was it just showing him doing that part in the video because Minnear didn't usually do lead vocals live? (Edit: According to Wikipedia, it is originally sung by Weathers. Today I learned!) Either way, that part is my favorite part of the song, and those vocals sound so crisp and full in this mix. The separation between the instruments is also phenomenal in this mix. Minnear's keys were a little overpowering in the original mix compared to the other parts, but here the keys are simultaneous clearer and appropriately spaced from the other parts, especially the drums and guitar. If this track is anything to go by, this album's mix might be the best Steven Wilson mix yet. I can hear tons of stuff in this mix that I never noticed before. For anyone that can't hear it, listen to both versions side by side and it should be quite evident. ALSO RIP RAY! Truly one of the greatest of all time. You live forever in these masterpieces!
