Ahhh, it is so refreshing to see a "gentleman's study", neat, serene with books instead of a "man cave" with posters, xbox and beer cans.

Nothing wrong with having either. I enjoy reading but also enjoy gaming or more "childish" hobbies. Is that not allowed?

Hi, I thought just to warn you, seeing as you love your old books, not to store that paper inside the Ladies Book, unless it is acid-free, or it will harm to your lovely book, due to the acidity in the paper. I'd also switch out any paper markers for acid free paper. Great collection.

May I ask about your desk? I wouldn't mind getting one myself for my lady's study ;) actually my partner and I share the same study, we just have two desks!

Nice library, the Folio Society have some rather good books if you want to look into expanding your collection.
@ThePegster307 жыл бұрын
I concur. I have a large collection of Folio Society books. They are gorgeous and the highest quality. I need to make my own video of the titles, but I want to have them all in one room and shelving unit.
@616Haggard3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePegster30 I used to turn my nose up at Folio Society. I thought the older Franklin's & Easton Press books were the best because of the silk and gold page ends. My tastes have refined over time, and now I really appreciate the Folio Society as well. I wish all hardcovers came in slip cases. Not to mention the Folios "Special Editions." Wish I could afford them. Heritage Press also makes some quality books.. usually at a great price on the used market.

What a stunning room! And, oh, that desk! I never knew I needed a round desk like that, until now. It makes so much more sense than a square one, where you only use the small portion directly in front of you!
@sheriffguy44795 жыл бұрын
Yesica1993 Thank you for watching! I did like that desk a great deal, but I ultimately found that it didn’t meet my needs and sold it, replacing it with a more traditional antique panel desk. As a law student (and now lawyer and part-time professor) I found it just didn’t have enough surface space for my computer and books. The desk I bought not only has more surface space, but two large “pull outs” on each side for when I am doing some heavy duty research. I did love how the demilune desk looked, and do miss the esthetic, but in the end I needed something more functional. Check out my more recent videos to see the new desk (which I also think looks very nice) and other changes!

Thanks! I guess "gentleman's" study is a bit of a misnomer! It looks a good bit different now, as I have pulled up the carpet and refinished the hardwood floors, replaced the bookcases with real antiques, and replaced the desk with a real antique. I have added a lot to the collection as well - all on a small budget as well! I keep meaning to doing another video tour, and hope to soon.

I see three stars on the spine of your copy of _The Crossing._ The _other_ Winston Churchill, the author of the six-volume _The Second World War,_ also happens to have three stars on the spine of his third volume, _The Grand Alliance._ (Not that this information would be the least bit useful to anybody.)

@@santoshd6613 thanks for asking, unfortunately I never got as far as I wanted but I did get a couple big classic looking shelves and I filled one of them about halfway with used books i found that I deemed suitable but right now it more or less looks like a normal home office so maybe being reminded of this will reinvigorate me to finish what I started 😂

Very nicely done. I have a somewhat similar set-up tho in a small space its in part of my living room. Just today, I was literally looking at a service photo of my grandfather during WW2 and the letter sent by the president upon his death. I am also in law school at present finishing my first year. Best of luck to you.

Cool Blackstone Commentaries set you got there! Too bad's it's falling apart. It's ex-library so that explains its condition. I wonder do you plan to have them rebound? I think that's an option and they won't lose the value if done well.
@Thecollectingman427 жыл бұрын
Where do you get these old books? I've never found stuff like this before, are they more common on the East Coast?
7 жыл бұрын
Ebay is a good place for old books.
@kendavis38646 жыл бұрын
I keep an eye out for old books whereever I go. Someone mentioned ebay, and I did find a couple that are in my collection there (especially if I am looking for something specific), but most are finds from antique stores and, believe it or not, thrift stores and good will. The early edition hound of the Baskervilles in the video was purchased for $1 at a local good will.

One the best book videos I've seen. I love the space! You did a great job. My one suggestion is to forego those B&N "leather bound" classics and upgrade to the genuine article - Easton Press editions. You might as well have the best. Many can be picked up for under $20 if you look hard enough.

There is so much that I love about this room! I am enamored of your half-circle reading desk. May I ask, sir, where you found it or how I could go about finding a small reading desk like it? It would be perfect for my "heavier" reading that requires some focus and concentration. Thanks for your video!
@kendavis38646 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The desk was actually a Craig's list find, and I thought it unique also. The term for that type of desk is a demilune desk. Perhaps you can find one in a search. I have since replaced it though, as it was a little small for my study habits. I now have an early 1900's oak panel desk. I hope to do another video before long.

Thank you! Absolutely on a budget - Almost everything was thrift store / Craig's list finds. I have since replaced most of the furniture with real antiques, but that was on a budget too. You just have to watch for bargains. For example, I purchased a three shelf barrister bookcase from Craig's list for $70. I spent a little more this time around, but it is still very affordable. I would say the entire room as you see in this video was done for under $600.
