@@MayaBishopStan basically Anne lister’s ex named Mariana calls Anne the nickname “Fred” in person and in letters and Anne lister read out a letter from Mariana for the 1st time to Ann Walker and Mariana called Anne lister “Fred” in the letter and Ann Walker wasn’t too pleased by it because she had inclinations of the two being close from others

Mariana loved Lister but she kept her on an unfair string for nearly 2 decades and did not love her enough to drop Charles and move in with her by the time Lister grew closer to Walker. Walker had more guts than Lister and Mariana put together. Poor Lister wanted love near her daily. She had finally to mature emotionally by age 40, one would hope. Her pining for Mariana showed a lop-sided dedication for way too long. She needed to move on, as opposed to wait for Charles to die. Love Walker's character development, she, after all, stayed with Lister until her death, in essence overcame her tribe's words against her and Lister. "Adney and Dearest" were actually a mature match for both but especially for Lister. I truly think that Walker & Lister, if Lister had lived passed their final travel of 1840, that they would have had a loving and mature life together. A heartbreaker.

I agree about Walker having more guts that Lister and Mariana. She had so much more to lose, especially with her fragile state of being. But, some of that courage should be attributed to Lister's care, affection and own determination.

@Bystander232 Excellent points. Walker's mental health issues were probably also exacerbated by Lister's driving personality, in that she may have felt unable to ever rise to the same level, or be an equal. Then there are the seeds of doubt against Lister planted by Walker's family. But, Walker seems determined to live as authentically as she possibly can. It's challenging viewing these circumstances through a 21st century lense because we can examine the issues these women faced with a completely different perspective, and only guess at what the real experience was like.

The fact that AL betrays AW really makes me sad it’s clear to me that AW loved AL very much however, AL on the other hand wanted the cake etc. AL seems to be the courageous one but to me AW shows much more courage than Mariana or AL. I don’t think I would have really liked AL. I admire her for all that she accomplished but she was brutal and manipulative

@@dianexuereb8889 I completely agree with you. Enjoyomg such a fantastic production doesn't negate the fact the protagonist is an anti-hero(ine). AL is manipulative and somewhat predatory. However, she displays a great capacity and need for love. She is single-minded in many of her pursuits, including her pursuit of AW. But, their marriage scene is so incredibly tender and moving. A very complex person with many facets.

@@tigrehaller4315 perfect description, a very complex person with many facets; truth be told I didn’t live in that era, so she might have been battling her own demons. even though her diaries are intimate and detailed I don’t think we can fully or completely understand who she really was. It’s easy for me to judge 182 years later. I just find myself rooting for AW she seemed pure in her intentions and she was troubled so I really feel for her. I can’t imagine what it was like for her when AL died. Having to deal with the Priestley, the Edward and the walker families wasn’t a walk in the park. I wish I could turn back time I would have loved to meet them especially AW AL left us the LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 a huge legacy and for that I’m enormously grateful

I know that most of you here are a fan of Anne Lister but for me, I'm on Ann Walker's team. AW is amazing and very brave. Setting aside the tragedy that AW had, she did what no other woman in her time could not even fantom about doing it. So, to me. Ann Walker is the hero of their love story. I seem to remember that Marianna threw Anne over at one point, and it wasn't until Anne started to pursue Ann Walker that she realized what she had lost. No doubt her horrid marriage also made her long for something else. Anne Lister seemed to have dealt with the rejection by being solitary for a while until Ann Walker caught her eye. On another note, this production is so incredibly pitch perfect in every aspect. Bravo all!
