00:00 Italian Style Introduction
The world is full of elegant and stylish gentlemen but most would agree there’s just something special about the style typified by Italian gentlemen like Marcello Mastroianni, Lino Ieluzzi, and Vittorio Gassman.
01:03 Early History of Italian Style
The Italian peninsula had dominated the fashion scene of Europe for centuries. And even after this dominance waned, the region was still known for its exceptional fabrics and craftsmanship. This history of, and devotion to, clothing excellence became a sartorial legacy that heavily impacted Italian style.
04:53 Italy and the Modern Fashion Industry
After World War II, the Italian people began the process of rebuilding their country. Clothing production would play a considerable role in this revival because Italy could leverage a massive clothing-production industry.
The rise of the great Italian fashion houses saw historic Italian style put on display to the world to rival even the influence of the Roman Empire. And the Italian appreciation for quality materials and personal flair quickly became a selling point for a gargantuan industry. Being home to so many fashion industries certainly helped Italians gain a reputation for their style.
8:19 Hollywood & Midcentury Consumer Demand
11:37 Contemporary Italian Style
The Neapolitan Suit, With ts unpadded natural shoulders, roping detailing, patch pockets, and a very trim silhouette is simply the most famous and distinctive of Italian suit styles.
Nearly every region of Italy has its own distinctive clothing styles that reflect the local realities of climate, culture, and class. Prominent examples include the → Roman Style, which follows the general form of a Neapolitan suit but with more sedate detailing
→ Milanese Style, with its strong, extended shoulder
→ Florentine Style, which combines the breadth of a Milanese suit with a rounded silhouette
16:13 Conclusion
It would have been very easy to build this video around stereotypes about Italian men. But we’ve found looking beyond the stereotypes far more enlightening. Ultimately, the exceptionalism of Italian style cannot be attributed to that famous Italian confidence alone.

Ottimo lavoro, Preston! Well done and congratulations on your Italian! Sadly, nowadays new generations in Italy don't dress with classic style anymore... it's just sneakers and trap music. But some of us try to keep the good old days alive! Grazie Preston, hope you'll visit Italy soon!

Man I was in Italy 4 Weeks ago. I have travelled the world quite a lot, but Italy must have been my least favorite holiday destination out of all of them. I was supposed to stay there for 3 weeks, after 2 weeks I could not take it anymore though. It was just boring. There was just nothing to do. It was extremely hot, and the only thing you could enjoy was the beach. There weren't any large discounter either. Maybe I'll give Rome and Milan a shot, but otherwise Italy was an extremely disappointing experience.

I think very much like the same, but the only reason why you get negative connotations is because that chav in cargo shorts takes the mickey out of your outfit. If you ignore that and think of all the positive compliments, I would simply ignore it. More women love staring at me in certain outfits.... So I capitalise on that lol.

In my experience, the reason is also societal. We were raised in an environment with no tolerance for deviation from fashion rules, especially "don'ts". Show up in a wrong color or textile match and you would be ridiculized, no matter how little or adult you are! This being said, ottimo lavoro Preston!

Italian designs are driven by emotions. you can feel this in their cars, furniture, appliances. Even a humble utilitarian typewriter was given a distinctive, sleek design (olivettis in 1960s/70s).

Just going by the images you show, I'd say Italians are stylish for what they're NOT wearing: no baseball caps, t-shirts with decals on them or torn jeans. No hoodies, oversized necklaces or grills that spell out "CASH MONEY" in rhinestones on their teeth. Also, their pants arent hanging below their butts, their clothing isn't three sizes too big and they're not trying to "make a statement" by going against expectations. Italian culture is very big on presenting a "bella figura." One of the ways they do that is to dress stylishly. But, the concept of stylishness applies to every aspect of the lifestyle of Italians who want to present a bella figura.

My former Mexican colleagues used to say the same about the difference between London & the rest of U.K.. Watch the local news & weather as an example - people wearing black and purple in summer (!?). On the other hand, I've had Italian friends who weren't dressy at all but older ones were ( in office attire). Just as people talk faster in the large cities, clothes , etc.. have more weight.

In some fields of business, it is impractical to wear stylish and high quality clothes. @@jakublulek3261 For sure, sometimes we have to dress appropriately depending on the job. My Grandfather and Great Uncle came from Sardinia at the turn of the last century and spent years working on Panama Canal construction. Later they built highways and railroads throughout the Northeast and as far West as Iowa, including a lot of hard rock blasting in New England. I have a photograph of them on a highway crew standing next to a steam tractor and my Grandfather, the supervisor, is wearing a vest, jacket, and necktie. Much later, in the 1960s, he owned the only Lincoln automobile in our town. That's why I drive a vintage Lincoln Continental now. Great Video Preston.

I spent a few weeks in northern Italy back in 2015. As I read now, the average pay in Italy is around 2500 euros in 2022. Back then, in 2015, sport coats cost was around 500 euros, not a full suit, but just the jacket, and not in an expensive designer shops, but in a small town small shops. And I saw men wearing such sport coats everywhere! Locals told me that Italian men would rather spend their money on a good suit than on a vacation or a car.

Getting well dressed is more and more seldom nowadays. Jeans tshirt and sneakers are now the global way of dressing up (not even trend anymore). Except in some higher positions but even there no more ties, jeans, casual shoes etc. Sad. But multi billion companies like Nike, Levi's, Gap and others are mainly responsible. You can't even find anymore shoes in malls or regular shoe stores, you have to go to the few refined ones. For children? Only rubber shoes. The clothing companies don't offer anymore a chance to the general population (they are considered for them as low class) a chance to get somehow well dressed all what counts is their profit. They sell super slim, skinny, tights, t-shirts, hoodies rubber shoes whatever sells the most. And worse all items are labeled for display as free advertisement (logos and names). Italy is not an exception. The stylish you see here are the invited in special events like fashion shows, nominations, etc. In the 30s to 60s it was the general population that was well dressed (at least the largest part of it)

I sincerely believe the protestant work ethic was a mistake. Americas history is one long tale of brutal treatment of all too willing workers. On the pages of the history books you can see both men that have no respect for themselves and men who have no respect for others. All that matters is proving that you are worth something by working as hard as possible to ensure that the opposite is true by the end of your life. Whether that means becoming rich and cruel or poor and broken depends on your social class.

Based on the comments, it seems the region and age of the people determine whether or not they dress this way. I’d love a more detailed video on how and why these trends affects certain areas and age groups more.

Because more developed and "young" area are more open to international trends and globalism and young people (most of them) want to dress like the rappers, trappers, tiktokers etc.

@@anotheryoutubeaccount5259 I'd say that this is not a "new italian fashion" or an "imported style"... the current trend with globalization is to delete any sort of regional uniqueness, and that's surely accelerated by the massive and ubiquitous presence of social media in younger generations. Today we're seeing a "global style", no more variety such as italian, english, french...

16:12 "Fatti mandare dalla mamma a prendere il latte" (have mom send you... to buy milk) is a Gianni Morandi evergreen song about a jelaous young man wanting to see his girlfriend (and forcing her to dump that other guy he caught walking with her holding hands OR ELSE... 😅) as excuse for her parents is that she is going out just to collect milk. That is why you see the cingy coreography with bottles 😅

Nowadays in Italy, it really depends on the region and age group. People seem more interested in style in bigger cities (Milan, Rome, Naples) and in the 40+ age group. One thing I find ubiquitous in well-dressed Italian men is the many bracelets they wear on their wrist. It kind of cheapens the look if you ask me.

I have a friend that works in the industry and travels to Italy all the time because she is a buyer. She jokingly says Italian men are so stylish because they are still dressed by their mothers. The ones that aren't dressed by their mothers wear tight fitting jeans and gaudy label printed shirts that are two sizes too small.

Great video. Preston, if I may offer some feedback. That open collar looks sloppy. The collar should not lay flat but have a good raise. I see it flat on your collar, almost as if a t-shirt. Maybe a better quality shirt, or a collar suited for wearing sans tie.

Even as a kid in the mid 70s, when watching my favourite film The Italian Job, I could see the Italian actors had an effortless style about them. Rossano Brazzi is the epitome of cool at the beginning (though driving a Lambo Miura helps), with his slim jim tie and wraparound shades. Raf Vallone is the every inch the dapper Mafia boss, and even his underlings look absolutely sub-zero. I don't think we'll every have another era like the 60s for sheer coolness, in terms of fashion and design.
