In the early spring of 1911, fifteen chess masters were invited to the seaside town of San Sebastian, Spain to compete in a round robin tournament. (1) Each player was invited based on a previous result. Every participant had won either first or second place in a chess master tournament, or two or more fourth place prizes. The turnout was a veritable who's who of chess mastery: Established masters such as Tarrasch, Frank James Marshall, Carl Schlechter, Geza Maroczy, David Janowski, and Amos Burn, and newer stars like Akiba Rubinstein, Aron Nimzowitsch, and Rudolph Spielmann were all in attendance. The tournament also marked the European debut of Jose Raul Capablanca, who had garnered fame for defeating Marshall in a match. The only noticeable absence was the world champion, Emanuel Lasker. As a result of this method of invitation, this tournament is often considered to be one of the strongest held in chess history. Games were played in the Gran Casino from February 20th to March 17th. The time control for the tournament stipulated that fifteen moves must be played each hour. Initially, Ossip Bernstein had objected to Jacques Mieses, the tournament organizer, about Capablanca's inclusion in the tournament based on one match victory. Capablanca proved himself first by defeating Bernstein in the first round, silencing his protests for the rest of the tournament. He then went on admirably to win clear first in the tournament, taking home the 5000 Franc prize, as well as winning the brilliancy prize. Rubinstein and Dr. Milan Vidmar shared second place behind Capablanca, while Marshall took clear fourth. The tournament was a landmark both in its strength and in heralding the arrival of Capablanca, a superb tournament player with a long career of victories ahead as well as becoming future world champion.

This game sort of opened my eyes to the fact that Capablanca is also human. He played a couple inaccuracies in this game that could've lead to a difficult game for him. Up until this point in the other games he's played it's felt like he was a human engine.

@@arnoldo8642 Exactly. Some people Like Saulius Savelis, should engage their brain before commenting about chess geniuses. No one suggests that Capablanca was a perfect chess player but as you pointed out, engine analysis supports the belief that he was one of the best ever, if not the best. Weak would be the very last adjective I would use to describe Capablanca.

in the lasker schlechter match the conditions where insanely in laskers favor, due to schlechters kindness. schlechter had to lead by 2 points to win the match, and even if he won lasker would still be worldchampion until schlechter would win a rematch. so in the 10th match with a score of 5:4 for lasker, schlechter had to go for a win if he wanted to even draw the match. Mieses hosted the tournament from San sebastian in 1911, but didnt participate. Schlechter did participate and took 6th place. he was know as the draw-king. i got this from a book i am currently reading, "the grandmasters of chess" from 1974.

Maybe I'm wrong but I assume that black can play pawn B6 for C5 next to try for double attacks on E3 (Bishop & Rook) and later on A3 (Bishop & B5 pawn or even other Rook from B8). Or not moving the Rook and try to push pawn to D4 (triple attack on E3).

Mieses got "mies" in it, which is German for bad, ill, or miserable. Schlechter got "schlecht" in it, which is also German for bad, ill, or miserable. Since it's a German newspaper, or at least in German, it is maybe possible that it was simply a mis-association of names while having been drawn from memory, or some such.

What is my knowledge about the Schlechter-Lasker Worldchampionship is that the agreement was yes, he needed only one more win to be world champion, but in case of only 1 win more the price-money would have been split. In any other case the winner takes all. So Schlechter being rather poor tried to take the whole price.

Thanks for your work - wonderful job! Just wondering from a numbers standpoint whether you look back to see what your fans and subscribers are watching in higher volumes that give you the most views or "clicks"? It seems looking back just over the last week or so, it is as follows: Nimzowitsch vs Capablanca - 57K views Leonhardt vs Capablanca - 57K views Artemiev vs Nakamura - 62K views Kovalev vs Kuipers - 58K views Giri vs Carlsen - 124K views Carlsen vs. Duda 102K views Capablanca vs. David 63K views Tarrasch vs. Capablance 58K views Carlsen vs. Anand 120K views You can see that the numbers of views that are people watching the games of Magnus are far greater than the non-Carlsen games. These numbers/data are taken from 05:00am Chicago time, on Feb 2, 2019. Just wondering if you'd consider a higher number of games by MC? Cannot stress how excellent your work is, and still wonder if you're planning to go to St. Louis in August? Let's start a fund to raise this money! Signed, Huge fan of yours from Chicago! matt0098

Question on the position after b4 at 9:21: what about the exchange sacrifice on a3? After Bxa3 and Rxa3 still two white pawns on b4 and e3 are hanging. I continued to play the position on the board and felt black is clearly better and likely winning. What does „the engine“ say? I do not have one...
