Good Old Detroit will keep on running. I used to work for a old Sand and Gravel company. And they had a few 1972 Chevy and GMC little conventional hoods with 8-71 supercharged V8 Detroit's pulling dump trailers and gravel trailers. Had a frontend wheel loader with a old 3 cylinder Detroit with 6-71 supercharged. The 3 cylinder had a small cracked cylinder sleeve in the 2nd cylinder. Leak water into the oil and we fill up with water every day after we started it so the engine would warm up and expand sealing the crack up and just keep idling and running all day long. We had to due oil changes at the end of every week on Friday or Saturday removing the oil and water mixture over the week, until winter time came. Then we took to the shop to pull the little Detroit out to do a complete overhaul to the little frontend wheel loader. Have fun them V8 Detroit's with 8-71 supercharger on top get rapping up some RPM's and sound mean as hell with a dual straight stacks. Cheers!

Awesome truck for you and your son to rebuild together, if you involved your son he will never forget that believe me , I'm 43 years old and I can remember the time that me and my grandfather spent together he was the one that thought me how to drive at 8 years old and he thought me in a international transtar with 10 speed the one that they turned 10th gear around and it was up against the dash at 8 years old it was the best time of my life and I will never forget so every time you can involve your son even little dumb things mean the world to them congratulations and God bless

8V71 13-speed. Bus Grease Monkey over by Centerville is a 2-stroke genius. That Astro would get you into the American Truck Historical Society. Don't forget that a 2-stroke will sound like it's screaming when it's not turning a lot of RPMs because you're getting twice the explosions of a 4-stroke.
@rickzima8697 Жыл бұрын
68 Astro, 8V71, 13 over, should have 4.11s! Tuned correctly, should be a 70 - 80 MPH truck. My 1st over road gig was a 64 Cracker Box 8V71 turboed and blown, injectors & timing tune; 13 double over! Good times! Then I got a 78 Astro, 6V92 TT 13 over. Lotta miles and speeding tickets with that one. Good luck with the build.

Boy, I bet your face hurt, just from all the smiling. lol! I spent my first 10 years of truckin', running from Philly, to Miami. (1989/1990) 1/2 the time in a 1969 Astro, and 1/2 in a 1968 MACK coe F model. We ran team, so 13 hours down, 14 back, 6 times a week. Charles Jacquin et Cie Inc. Schnapps down, and Jamaican Rum coming back. Our Bossman bought the Astro used from Budget Rent a Car. ($600.00) She had a tiny 240 hp Detroit 6 with a 5&4. It was just awfull. lol! One of our solo drivers flipped his Pete in NJ, so we got his 16v 71, and 18 speed Eaton Fuller. What a difference!! The truck never got turned off. She was so fast, Karl and I got stopped once at 3.10 am in Georgia, by a State Police Helicopter landing on I-95 N. lol! It was crazy fun! But again. That was THEN! NOW they have M16's. lol! OK kid here's my 2 cents on your truck. The old, If I were you. I would take that truck to the MATS, and double my money selling it. Dude. You gotta family to house, cloth, and feed. So turn & burn them wheels, get home to chase your wife, and kids around. There's 100's of old guys out there restoring old Jimmies. In 5 years they'll be dead, and their wife or kids will sell em for next to nothin'! 6 private truck museums went under just last year. My Daughter (35) will tell you, right now, how she loved Sunday nights, because it was the only night I got to tuck her into bed as a kid. She loved going with, when I ran solo trips. But talking with earplugs, and Headphones on, wasn't great for Dad/Daughter talks. I tell all the young guys like you. Work, and then go tf HOME! Don't pull wrenches, and sit around, and listen to us old farts. Buy the most comfortable, long ass wheel base, tall sleeper, truck you can. So that when you're my age, you're not groaning, every time you move. I'm not saying don't keep an eye open for a Great (restored) Astro. I'm just saying, Do for your wife, your kids, and yourself, first. Be safe out there too! BB

That’s a real sweet gem of an Astro right there. It’d be cool if you turned it into like a old school large at from back in the day. Like a 70s paint scheme, and customization and old school goodies from the era. Just an idea, at the end of the day it’s your rig and you can do whatever you want to it lol. Keep up the great work!

Nice project truck, it's been said that the ol 2stroke diesels needed to be wound out when pulling as they seemed to struggle on low end torque but had ample power when reved up, hence the low rear end
@DannyAllen10271966 Жыл бұрын
They have no low rpm torque it’s wide open or bust!
@bertgrau3934 Жыл бұрын
The 92 series were great pullers, but they got horrible fuel mileage. From the sound of the exhaust I thought it was a Cummins. Doesn't sound like a 2 stroke Detroit. If it had stacks it might, or no mufflers then it would be loud.
