Wow!!! This video is pure gold. Thank you so much yet again for one of the best watchmaking videos ever made... period. What an eye opener. I bought the Seitz reamers as a separate set to use in a micro variable DC operated drill press. I also have the Horia jewelling set. Thanks again. You deserve a million subs. Brilliant camera work and editing.

This video is a gem! A jeweling tool is next on my list as I get deeper into watchmaking, and this video perfectly explains and shows the methods and components of the tools. I have been watching the used tool market, where many sets are incomplete, and this video gives me a better understanding of what they are missing and whether or not I need them. Bravo! Thank you for making and sharing this! 😁
@MacroTime288007 ай бұрын
Missing pushers shouldn’t be a problem because you can buy them new. But of course the more of them are missing, the more expensive it’s going to get. You really only need the concave pump pushers, I wouldn’t worry about the rest 👍

These videos are golden!. I have been wanting to get a Seitz tool mainly so I could ream out barrel arbor holes that tend to enlarge over time. Yes, oftentimes, they can be closed using a staking set, and I have done that, but I have always wanted to ream out the hole and insert a new bushing or jewel. The tool can be found but my problem is finding a place to obtain the correct size jewels or bushings. Thanks for your cool and thorough videos and tip on the reamers using the staking set.

Disappointed of bergeon. I really like the ideea, and the different things you can do with it, but the quality...
@MacroTime288007 ай бұрын
The quality is a problem. The micrometre, after taking it apart and putting some grease there, it's much better now. But the pushers, that's something I'd expect from a cheap clone.
@Mc_Nizzle6 ай бұрын
I have two older Bergeon/Seitz jewel setting tools and the quality is definetly better than on the tool in the video. I think the grey version from the 60s/70s is the best version, as it has 4mm pusher and 4mm anvils, not like the older ones with 3mm and 4mm mixed in a single set and the quality is at least better than shown in the video.
@MacroTime288006 ай бұрын
The quality is not what it used to be and of course it now costs a lot more than it used to. Perhaps the cost is just inflation but the quality suffers

I have the made in Switzerland Seitz jewelling tool the same as described in the book of this video.Mine comes with the extra chrome plunger screw knob that can be used instead of the lever.When using it to to push out or set jewels the micrometer can be set to depth and the Crome knob has almost 3 mm of travel to screw down to the micrometer set depth which is more than enough to screw press the jewel in or out of its setting.The pressing shaft will return after setting or pressing the jewel out as the spring is still acts the same with the chrome top screw as when using the handle.This old Seitz set comes complete in a long box with flat pushers pump pushers concave pushers reamers anchors straiteners and anvils.A very well made old tool.

The old Seitz tool can be used without the handle and replaced by the extra chrome screw knob,and it springs back as well!The same as the Horia and with the handle folded out of the way no need for the extra end shake tool.

Great video. I appreciate your level of attention to details. I have purchased an old Seitz. Anvils look better than new Bergeons in your video, but they are not polished as your Horias.
@MacroTime288007 ай бұрын

Thanks for this video. I had assumed all along that Bergeon was top of the range. That's horrendous how poorly finished some of those pieces are.
@MacroTime288007 ай бұрын
I understand your assumption, I used to be the same. Bergeon makes more tools than Horia, they are everywhere and they are expensive which makes you think they are the best. They make some very decent tools but after purchasing the jewelling tool, brand new, I now feel very uncomfortable spending a lot of money on their tools because I don’t know what I’m going to get. The Horia tool, I can now appreciate why it costs what it costs. Unfortunately I can’t say that about Bergeon. Horia is clearly ahead of the game, way ahead.

Couple of comments, You can use concave pushers as anvil if you have tight spaces just make sure to stop in time or you will crush the jewel after it's out. The threaded bottom on the horia is to fit a screw so you can use pushers upside down. You should never, ever push a jewel out from the underside to the outside or from outside to inside as the holes are slightly tapered to prevent jewels from being pushed out away from the axle if you do this you can damage the hole and have jewels that are looser than factory spec. Your Seitz press is a previous generation than what bergeon sells now, I've only used older sets so I can't comment on the quality of the latest one but my old sets where all perfect. I mainly use the horia both the micrometric kind and the lever, the reamers are really nice and they also have 5 sided broaches which are more ideal centering wise VS the D shaped reamers. You can put the spring back in the Seitz to make it go up again... The screw is for adjusting the depth of the spindle so you can use the micrometer bit and anvil. Good video overall. Edit, looking closely at your video it appears your spindle is missing the snap ring retaining the spring, if you have a lathe you can easily cut a groove for a split steel ring to fit. Your tool is useless otherwise it will just fall all the way down when you insert it...
@Inkreptile4 ай бұрын
I've also seen the micrometric horia and it works the same as the horia. "Chatons sa" also made a micrometric press.

I thought that’s what the thread in the base of the Horia tool was for. I just found it strange that Horia didn’t have that screw on their website, or to be correct, I didn’t see one. I had a discussion with several watchmakers whether there is a way to push jewels out. One suggested that perhaps from the underside. My guess is that if the holes are tapered, that will be only on the higher end movements as this adds cost to manufacturing. Where did you get the info from? I don’t think the Bergeon/Seitz is missing the snap ring. It’s not mentioned anywhere in the documents from Bergeon. They either no longer do it that way or you perhaps bought a used one that has been modified?
@Inkreptile4 ай бұрын
@@MacroTime28800 most lower end movements have tapered holes, I was taught this in watchmaking school.

Great video (really!), but I have a couple of points. First is that you shouldn't have removed the spring when converting the Seitz to micrometer mode because that's why the pusher now doesn't go up when you unscrew the micrometer. It goes up and down just like the Horia if you don't remove the spring. Second point is that I'm glad you're pointing out the quality of (recent) Seitz pushers and stumps, but keep in mind that vintage ones are often much better made, correctly concave, and with little pump pusher side shake. This comparison is most useful if you're purchasing a new tool. Older Seitz sets also include far more stumps.
@MacroTime288004 ай бұрын
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! The cap is not attachable to the spindle, I do not understand how it would go up? I can only compare what I have, I do not have the old Seitz tool hence only comparing the the new Seitz/Bergeon.
@hugeshows4 ай бұрын
@@MacroTime28800 The spring pushes the spindle back up, it doesn't attach to the cap as you noted. Try it! Also, the screw on the top of the cap changes the depth of the inside of the cap which allows you to 'zero' the micrometer in any given position. I just uploaded a demonstration video on my channel if you are curious.
