I really like the Prodigal Son’s version best. I wonder if the Wallace Seymour would be different in the tube version? Thanks for sharing this lovely pigment😘
@stiviwonders7 ай бұрын
I agree and it is also possible for both PB33s to have different uses. Wallace Seymour's PB33 speaks of subtle sophistication, truly delicate. While the one from the Prodigal Son's Pigments can be reliable for bold and beautiful strokes.

This is by far my favorite pigment....wait! wait! Lapis Lazuli and Manganese Blue share the #1 spot in my heart. 😍 There is a subtle difference in the first two genuine swatches. I'm guessing that WS grinds theirs to a smaller particle size, causing the slight change in color, finer granulation, and the milky puddle. A few RS pigments do the same thing. BTW, Perfect timing. I was already planning to purchase more PB33 from Prodigal Sons Pigments tonight. 🥳 Thanks again for creating and sharing another stellar video. 🥰

That's terrific! So happy to hear about this coincidence. Generally, I love clean blues, from Genuine Lapis to PB33 to Egyptian Blue to Genuine Smalt. The cloudy puddle on Wallace Seymour isn't as prominent in lighter washes. It's not a concern, just puzzling. Greg just uploaded new PB33 pans. There's slight pan warping, according to his listing, but that is not a dealbreaker, if I may offer my view on that. I will be needing some Dioptase from him soon. 😍 Thank you for being here, as always! I have some exciting videos coming up, including Genuine Lapis Lazuli videos. 🥰

@stiviwonders The cloudiness wouldn't keep me from purchasing either. In fact, I would really like to own it. 😩 I have no issues with a warped pan either, and my pocketbook will thank him. My current delight is with the use of 3 of his pigments. Purple Ochre Deep, Goethite, and Reed Green. I love that combination. ❤️ Im always ready for your next, new video. 👋 Ciao

have you dried davinci Manganese blue which has a little P15 but the rest is genuine PB33? I wonder how it compares with prodigal sons
@stiviwonders7 ай бұрын
Pure genuine form will always be incomparable. Alternatives take us closer to the visual display, “closer” being the realistic, operative word. Close but not cigar.

@@stiviwonders I agree but Ive wondered it because it is half genuine :)

I have all of daVinci’s tubes, old and new. So I didn’t include it for a reason. It is just another Phthalo essentially. ;-)

@@stiviwonders agreed on Mghram. Im so curious though about Davinci because its half genuine :D
@stiviwonders7 ай бұрын
My apologies, I meant daVinci. I was packing some MGraham tubes earlier for a friend. The daVinci one appeared similar with Daniel Smith’s. It has this unnatural brightness to it.

I have noticed this since the very first time I watched your videos: you hold your brush at the very very tip. Is that just how you hold it or are you doing that for the aesthetics of the video? To be clear, I don't think it's weird or wrong, I'm just curious.☺
@stiviwonders7 ай бұрын
As a fine art calligrapher, there are so many skills that also cross over to watercolor practice. For example, there are many ways to hold a brush but being gentle is number one. Not sure if you also noticed how neat or clean and vibrant my swatches are. How we approach the paper matters, especially when painting wet on wet, in order to retain its freshness or vibrancy, as opposed to wearing it out. I don’t do things for aesthetic. That’s being vain. Everything that I do has a purpose. 🥰

I paint with Manganese Blue Hue from Daniel Smith and I like it so much. It’s impossible to distingue that from the real PB 33
@stiviwonders7 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your views but respectfully, I strongly disagree. There is clearly an undeniable difference. However, that doesn't mean that Genuine Manganese Blue PB33 takes away from the beauty of Daniel Smith's proposed modern alternative, which is the one that you mentioned. It's just they are not in the same league. PB15s have their own ballgame. Genuine Manganese PB33 is a unique, luminous blue pigment that no other pigment can replace in terms of aesthetic value and properties. Modern hue alternatives can only come close. "Close" being the operative word. Close but no cigar.
@diadumenos827 ай бұрын
You are a talented painter and you can distinguish that real pigment, but to me it seems quite hard to do. Maybe if I see those colour “live” and not in video I could, but I only have Manganese Blue Hue at the moment, so I can’t. By the way Your swatching and video are amazing, please don’t stop doing. Maybe one day you could make a video about ALL your watercolours paints, papers and brush. It would be amazing ❤
@stiviwonders7 ай бұрын
@@diadumenos82 Hahaha, I have no plans of making a video on all my paints, papers, and brushes. That would take several days or weeks and it won't achieve anything for the viewer who's trying to learn. What I have in mind though is to release useful videos for watercolor learning and more pigment discovery ones like this video that you just watched. Speaking of this video, it appears to have captured the critical points, especially noticeable and subtle differences. Daniel Smith's Manganese Blue Hue has this unnatural display of brilliance. It is obtrusively bright, which normally is indicative of an optical brightener added to the paint. Perhaps in an attempt to replicate the genuine manganese blue pigment? But that is based on observation and can be speculative. I generally avoid using Phthalos. I prefer other blue pigments.
