Tritium doesn't need charging. The gas is always emitting that glow. Same thing in night sights on guns which last anywhere from 8-12 years depending on color and volume of gas. It will still glow after that time just less output. Love the channel and keep up the good work.

I like to put on your videos when i cook or wash dishes, or feel like watching something other than tv, but as such, i have to rewatch most videos to really soak in the details. Well i was making myself some pasta, and half listening (not your fault tgv) when you were talking about the weight differences between the smaller and larger pieces, instead of grams i heard GRAND and i like these watches but i quite nearly had a heart attack. Great video! Merry christmas

If you're looking for a great tool watch to blend with almost any style and want all the benefits of a Marathon watch, go with the steel navigator. If you have a legit reason to wear a bulky and large watch designed and purpose built for diving, go for the MSAR or GSAR.

Just an FYI the mid size felt very small on my 6.25" flat wrist...I prefer 38mm watches typically. It's the actual dial size without the bezel that makes it look like a child's watch, its really really tiny. Definitely will be ordering the full size to check it out! Build quality felt amazing

Great video! In a world where so many watch companies want to be associated with military users and sell all sorts of heritage stories Marathon are the real deal. Good ETA or Sellita movements, full ISO dive standard, MIL-SPEC, tough as nails and Swiss made for a very reasonable price. I like the no nonsense styling, there is a brutal logic and honesty which works. It does beg the question of standards and what standards other manufacturers use given so few seem to manufacture and test to the ISO diver's standard. If Seiko and other Japanese manufacturers can do it on their very affordable models it seems odd some very expensive luxury watches just take a "trust us" approach to testing and certification. Of course very few will use dive watches for diving, but if you buy one it's nice to know it's the real deal.

Nice review, thanks for sharing. Been a big fan of these watches having purchased my first one in 2007. Now own 5 of them. The Tritium is good for 25 years so it lasts more than just one full night, never needs to be recharged. As for the weak points: 1) Bezel insert & Triangular marker - damage easily but are also easily replaced. 2) Crown - material is soft and threads strip easily and crowns break every few years. The good news is that since the crown material is softer than that of the crown screw down point, you never have to worry about damage to the watch body. As a general practice, anytime I make a purchase of a used on, I send it out and have the crown and bezel insert replaced. If the actual bezel is damaged, it too can easily be changed for about $80.00 (part only). Again, I'm a big fan. I mention the crown and bezel as weak points but actually these are strengths when compared to many other watch manufactures such as Luminox. I recently purchased two Deep Dive watches which run about the same price as the Marathon GSAR. One of the bezels was damaged and Luminox does NOT replace bezels, they will only provide a new case which is extremely expensive. What a mistake I made with this purchase. So glad I have the Marathons. Lastly, the ETA 28-24 is a real workhorse with both the ETA 28-24-2 and the Sellita acting as exact clones.

Yeah because we buy Sinn UX's because we dive 12k deep, or buy Speedmasters because we're astronauts... What if you keep your watches in a box in a closet and want to wear one before going out at night? If you had a tritium watch you wouldn't have to charge the lume first and it would be much brighter. Maybe getting stuck in caves isn't a danger if you spend your days behind a keyboard but some of us actually go outside...

It's worth noting that, while there is a CAGE (parts number) for this watch, it doesn't meet the dial requirements for general issue because the dial is supposed to be completely free of manufacturer info and only have a rad symbol. I do love these watches though and wish that we all got issued one instead of having to buy our own. Reference MIL-PRF-46374G for the "mil-spec" standard for watches.

Nice review! Regarding the Tritium tubes, they will glow basically the same for a lot of years, you do not need to 'charge' them with another light source. You could put it in a pitch black room for a few years and it would still glow the same as before.

@m4ckan666

+The Urban Gentry Actually, Tritium gas tubes does not need any exposure from any other light source to be able to glow! Light is created from the tritium radiation interacting with a phosphor material so no other source of energy is needed for them to glow. That's the biggest selling point for tritium gas tubes, they doesn't glow as bright as superluminova but they will glow for a long time without any other light source :) Half-life of tritium is ~12 years so it should glow half as bright at that time compared to what it does today.

I had to come say - the review says, "the tritium stays lit most of the night". No, it glows continuously for _decades_. Not very bright, but always there. You don't notice it during the daytime, but it's ready any time it's dark. It doesn't drop off over the hours, the way any other lume does. It's an entirely different technology - the phosphor is not giving off light because it's temporarily absorbed energy from other light sources, it's giving off light because it has a minute quantity of tritium gas sealed in each tiny glass tube, along with the phosphor.

This was an excellent and comprehensive review. I've been looking at the "medium" diver's watch for a little while now and this video might just have pushed me over the edge. Might I ask what is your wrist size? I've got fairly small ones myself, 6 inch circumference, with a "width/diameter" of approximately 47 to 50mm. With no access to try them on in person, I'm concerned the medium might not fit me.

I like you showing the watches size in proportion to the rest of your body. You get a better idea of size that way.

How did the rubber strap hold up? Did it get sticky because the rubber reverts back to it’s pre-vulcanized state?

Funny thing about this watch. I’m not a fan of protruding crowns so I was hesitant on this buy considering it really sticks out farther than most I’ve seen and worn. But it really doesn’t bother me for some reason. I wear my bracelets a bit loose so it does jab into my hand but it’s kinda telling me, “I’m just mean! And I’m here to serve you!” 😆

Great review and comparison TGV. Do you think such solid military watches should have fixed bars? Or do the drilled lugs allow for stronger spring bars?
@theurbangentry
@theurbangentry 8 жыл бұрын
+Mr Cholmondeley Excellent question. I think with drilled lugs you can have a special spring bars with longer ends that are far stronger, however you can only change them with drilled lug holes. The Marathons come with them, so a very worthy point to bring up. Thank you! Best regards, TGV

+Ryan Mead Haha, thank you Ryan. A tough one definitely, without a doubt this one it the toughest, the Squale is more about looks, and the Oris is more about design. We all know I love the Squale 1521 but I guess we will have to duel them! Enjoy the rest of your Sunday :D Best regards, TGV

I like these watches a lot. How would you rate these next to a Deep Blue watch? I've been wanting a dive watch for a long time and Deep Blue really grabbed my attention for quite some time but this is a very close contender. The big difference for me is Deep Blue watches are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, while these seem to be more functional. Functionally, the Deep Blues are very comparable to these as far as tritum markers, water resistance, 26 jewel automatic movement, etc. What are your thoughts

I've been wondering the same thing. I've been on the hunt for a good quality Dive watch for some time now. Been researching everything from Citizen, Tauchmeister, Deep Blue, Breitling, Omega, Rolex, and now Marathon. SO many choices.

I have a legitimate question: why, in this modern age, are militaries giving contracts for mechanical watches to be issued to their personnel? Couldn't they just issue a cheap digital watch which would keep time much more precisely, and they would be like 12 dollars each?

US military budget is fekking huge. I suspect us Brits probably get a casio. Unless of course you're an SBS diver or some other special forces.

If you are a soldier at the front and the battery in your watch goes bad...what do you do?? Have you ever tried getting your battery replaced in a war zone? A good quartz battery will last 3 years at most, the government inventory could easily sit for 1 to 2 years before being issued...the mechanical watch is a better design for a military's needs. If you are talking about Ironman or G-shock watches, sorry and no offense but those watches are "disposable" watches never meant for military use. They are made to a price-point just like a pair of jeans or underwear. I am not a quartz/digital hater...they are terrific for civilian use, I have a Casio F91w that I wear to work and it's perfect.

Scotty H most of the guys I know that are in use G-Shocks. Cheap disposable and for the SF guys doesn’t scream military or American.

G-Shocks totally scream military and US - They've been featured on the wrists of many a movie star featured in a war film. They are disposable and reliable though, probably why they're used and loved by many in the armed forces.

I would say that Luminox Recon Point Man has better functionality. It has a walking speed markings, the bezel has also tritium tube so it doesn't fade out, it has smaller weight and is also Swiss made.

Hey TGV. Iv been eating pannetone for the past 2 weeks. Just wanted to bring up a point about the Sellita sw200 movement... isn't it almost identical to the ETA 2824-2? I beleive Eta lost their patent to theirs allowing other manufacturers to copy the design. I may be wrong but if you know otherwise do correct me. Merry christmas!
