All you said makes perfect sense. The Intellivision is the ideal candidate for the Plus treatment. For the Jaguar, Atari would need to follow the NES/SNES mini model and include games in the unit itself. Or they should re-release at least the worthy games, which are not a lot. The Jag commercial library was already tiny, but out of those 50/60, only 20 at best deserve a modern release, so it can be done

Hi, Jon.👋 Thank you for this video. As you may or may not know the Mattel Intellivision was my very first gaming console, back in the late 1970s, even though I was wanting an Atari 2600 from my father for Christmas. I used to have every Intellivision game that was released, including Intellivoice, and all of those games too. I totally agree that Atari should release an Intellivision+ console, and make it so that one can use the original cartridges in it. Maybe then Atari could also re-release some of the best Intellivision games too as an updated 21st century version of the game(s)?

Even though the Amico was a complete scam, it did show how much interest there is in the Intellivision. I didn't own an Intellivision until the 90s and it really is a great system and probably the only remake system I would bother with. If they did redesign the controllers, I would hope they would offer that seperately and keep the original controllers intact. I am one of the few that actually like the originals. +1000 to adding a joystick option to the Intellivision controller. The “Stickler” was a worthy add-on “back in the day”. Wireless controllers would be preferable, but with an option to use wired controllers as well. Atari would need to get the license for “Tron Deadly Disks” instead of removing the movie reference from the game. Also, for complete greatness, Space Battle was ORIGINALLY supposed to be a licensed tie-in to the 1978 “Battlestar Galactica” TV series. A homebrew hack was released a few years back. Atari should make this available. The Intellivision games are indeed “good and interesting”. The console should include support for original cartridges. I’d buy it!!!!
@CFF19742 ай бұрын
If Atari makes an Intellivision+, please make it FPGA. Atari could use the Intellivision 2 mold as it is compact enough, and has detachable controllers. The only change that I would suggest is to have separate power and reset buttons instead of the combined one. Atari could also repurpose the 2600 adapter that was compatible with the original Intellivision 2, to add 2600/7800 cartridge support. As for the controllers, there is an arcade style stick that you can slide on top of the disc. However I would not mind if they re-design them, or better yet buy the long play third party controllers.

What the Intellivision enjoyed in graphic superiority over the Atari 2600, it suffered in the form of a much smaller game library. Mattel rightly earned the 20 per cent of the home video game market that it had achieved, but then Coleco arrived on the market, followed by the Atari 5200. Then came the home video game crash.

Interesting idea. I do feel that Atari would find success with the 5200 and Atari regardless of when they decide to do a plus series as the controllers alone would be worth it for fans. For these two systems they would most likely need to reach out to the homebrew community for some Cartridge releases due to the small libraries but also for a new killer app for th Jaguar, Aliens vs Predator is seen as that console top game and getting a new licensing rights would be expensive so it may be wiser to get a new game either from the community or from Night Dive or Digital Eclipse.

Either way, I think this is a great idea for a future release! I would definitely preorder!

I would hate that, personally; touchscreens are not good controllers. Not being able to feel the keypad would make it harder to play. There are too many fast-twitch games, like AD&D, where if you have to look down at the controller to find a keypad key, you are dead. It has to be a physical keypad.

I followed the Atari VCS and I too believed that console would never see the light of day. It took a very long time but it did release much to the surprise of fans and detractors. The Amico I thought looked interesting and I knew I would hear more about it later. I didn’t. If it wasn’t for a GameStop listing of a date when it would come out made me a little more interested. When that date came and went, they changed the release date again. When the console didn’t come out then I smelled something fishy. Since then, I went down the rabbit hole with the cult that came from that console and made the decision to step away. If it comes out it does, but I’m not losing sleep over it. I personally believe the Amico will fall in line with the Coleco Chameleon as a console with promise but never sees the light of day unfortunately. I could be wrong in my belief, but these constant “quiet times” are unheard of and should be scrutinized.

It seems like the next obvious move, and would go a long way toward their goal of preserving that era of gaming. I think one challenge you overlooked is their investment in the Atari + platform's universal compatibility. If they want to make that promise, it will need some way to remain universally compatible with 2600 and 7800 games. On the software side that's easy enough. Just include the existing emulation in the new hardware. An Intellivision + however, having a different cartridge slot, will need to either have a second slot, or come with a pin adapter. I would lean toward an adapter as a pack in myself. The 2600 and 7800 + unites could also have a reverse adapter for Intellivision cartridges sold along with a software update. I agree that going full wireless with the controllers is a smart move. The Int+ could act as a charging dock for them as well. It doesn't necessarily have to be as huge as the original. They could use the smaller model 2 version, which just by holding the controllers in a different position was able to reduce the overall footprint of the console. Now personally, I'm hoping for an XEGS+. A system fully compatible with the 8-bit computer line.
@JustWasted3HoursHere2 ай бұрын
I think a good compromise for the controller would be to include one like the original, but with the screw-in joystick like you mentioned *BUT* make the controller port USB and compatible with third party USB controllers that are already out there in case people would prefer a more standard type of controller. If necessary, it could allow the controller buttons to be remapped to whatever buttons the plugged in controller has. Many would say, and I agree with them, that the Intellivision's controller was definitely its Achilles Heel and this would accommodate people on both sides of the fence.

I know you were a little disappointed how closed minded I was to the 7800+ but I went on to say it was because I am so sick of 2600 and 7800. Like beyond sick of it. An INTV+ is a no brainer and I am sure its being worked out but when talking about the Lynx and Jag +, I think its more aimed at kats like us that want an affordable and modern way to play these games more than a market of folks looking for games to go along with it. They can pack a multi cart and sell others for that clientele. Not the general market, though that is a sub audience I agree should not be ignored.

You're on point!
@labnine33622 ай бұрын
I agree with you on this 100%. If they do it, it needs to be an INTV II and they need to do the controllers like the Flashback version (but with the correct wiring mapping). The key thing though is that they need to get the third party game licensing because those games are the games that made INTV worth owning. If it doesn't have Imagic, Activision, Atarisoft... it's going to be lame IMO. Tall order, I know. Otherwise, I'll stick with my modded INTV II and my already existing cartridge collection. PS There's a mod that allows the Genesis AV port. That means HDMI with an adapter. It's true and it's amazing.

While hoping for a 5200 plus (Joust, Wizard of Wor...) I'd indeed like an Intellivision console remake. However it's a must that it HAS to have a cartridge port. It didn't have as many 3rd party products but those it does - Dungeons and Dragons, Masters of the Universe and TRON - would both be expensive and/or nightmares to get authorized. AND they are kind of the games people got the system for or wished they had it for. So make sure it has a cart that can play anything including ROM carts. The current ones on the 2600 do seem to work but has to be ONE at a time the select software works on original hardware but not 2600+ even though things like Custers Revenge do... BTW - also with Tron Ares coming out legit perhaps instead of an impediment it could be a boost? They could work with these guys and make special neon/grid early cyberpunk fetish consoles and dare we dream a NEW Tron game for it? THAT I'd buy and promote even though I'm pretty much NO new remakes, sequels, prequels, etc. otherwise..!

What if, instead of releasing a 5200+ mini, they made a 5200 controller that could work with the 2600+ and 7200+, and then rereleased 5200 games on a new cart that fit the 2600+ & 7800+? Also, the cartridges all had multiple games on them. I don't know about anyone else but I'd buy that. Now, what if they did that with Intellivision games? Instead of an Intellivision+, they released a controller and made Intellivision carts with a few games on each that could be played on these units? Again I'd consider buying that. It's not as great as having a mini 5200+ or Intellivision+. You couldn't use original carts though. What if they made a cartridge adapter so you could plug an original 5200 or Intellivision cartridge? I'm not saying these are the best options or even likely. But I am saying that I think these things could be possible. And I do think some people would be interested. I don't own a 2600+, and while I'm tempted by the 7800+ I don't know if I will buy one. For me personally as a kid who always wanted a 5200 but my parents said, NO, I would love to see a 5200 + a way to do right by the system, while it's controllers get maligned, what get's left out of the conversation was just how great their arcade ports were. I would love to see them give the 5200 a reboot with the joysticks done right, have a modern analog stick guts that has a locking mechanism to go between self centering and non self centering, for the few games that took advantage of the controller. That would be my wish.

I would honestly want to see a combo type Intellivision. A console with a cartridge port, and a strong library of the games preloaded. This offers fans to play their old library, or new comers a chance to experience it without the investment. After all, the moment this would be released, the aftermarket for the original releases would skyrocket. I wouldn't against My Arcade getting the license to produce an Intellivision Game Station. I would be willing to drop My Arcades 80-100 dollar price range for one.

Okay, this is a good case! I say, go with controllers based on the original, even if they're not the greatest design. Full size wireless controllers, because wires plus the "docking" feature is just awkward. This means the proportions will be weird, given a smaller console, but I don't think this will be a problem for the cartridge slot.

Well I probably would pass on intellivision + as I can’t collect everything. I find the Colecovision more interesting and own a Phoenix which is pretty cool btw. Hope if people want intellivision + Atari produce one for them.

Fantastic case for building the Intellivision+. I never played any of these games as a kid. I would really enjoy exploring and discovering them today!!

Yo, just found this channel. I owned an intellivision and have been searching for a retro intellivision system for decades. I would immediately snap one up.

I think you maybe unintentionally hit on why modern Atari's first plus and/or mini consoles are the 2600+, 400 Mini and 7800+. It's the controllers. All of these systems use basically the same controller design, with a digital stick and one or two buttons. That's easy to replicate and even expand upon. The Jaguar, Intellivision and even 5200 use very different controllers that are much harder to physically fit into an 80% design, and also probably more expensive to replicate (analog input, numeric keypads, etc.). I don't doubt that Atari will tackle these systems eventually and they're probably already working on them now. But they seem to be going after the low hanging fruit initially. The harder stuff might just require a little more of a wait. That said, after the 7800+, I'm not sure what other low hanging fruit there is. The Lynx controller is four way digital with two buttons, so that honestly might be the next easiest. Or even an Atari ST mini, which also used 2600 controllers (it could support things like flight sticks, but was backward compatible and Atari would only need to include a 2600 style controller in the box). I think people would LOVE that, and it would probably be easier than an Intellivision+.
@GenXGrownUp2 ай бұрын
All sound deduction. One note on the Lynx controller front - in addition to the two action buttons, a replication of the Lynx would also need the additional three control buttons: Option 1, Option 2, & Pause. Those were pretty commonly used as expanded functions (menu, map, etc.) and would need to be present. Still, nowhere near as complex as a keypad/overlap scenario!

Was an Intellivision kid growing up (still have my original + carts). As much as I want an Intellivision+, and would get it for sure, what I am really hoping for is Digital Eclipse to get to work on a modern compilation. Heck, throw in a USB controller for modern systems and we are all set. Do wish they had Night Stalker and Astrosmash, 2 of the best games. Plus I doubt they can get all the Activision and Imagic stuff since Microsoft owns it now, and Burgertime would be tough (data east), and Frogger/Popeye were all Parker Bros, the Coleco stuff (Nintendo), but plenty of quality games in the library.

I'd also appreciate Inty getting the DE treatment. Heck, I'd like BOTH if I could!
@c1ph3rpunk2 ай бұрын
The controller would prove, as it has in the emulators, the most difficult part. Learn from them, Nintellivision for example, don’t even try to recreate the original, come up with a really good way of using more modern controllers/gamepads/joysticks. The original one is just not worth re-inventing, that investment alone would likely kill it financially. There’s always some weird timing issues emulating that processor though, as well as the graphics processor being notoriously sketchy on some instructions. I was lucky as a kid, dad was an EE, and worked for TI, Zilog and MOSTEK, every time a new game platform came out, we got one. Mainly so he could tear it apart and see how it worked, but i got it after, and the Intellivision was one of them. Personally, my fav of the era was the Colecovision with the adapter to play 2600 games. I’d buy a new version of that. Heck, I have the modern C64, 400 and A500 mini machines in addition to real versions of each.

I would actually like to see them take a gamble and actually try to make a new console again. Like new new, maybe it could be backwards compatible with the 2600 and 7800 games and their re-releases, but focus on brand new games. A pipe dream to be sure, but it'd be cool

I would love to see Intellivision plus, but because the Amico tarnished the reputation of the Intellivision brand, gamers are still wary about it, they would have to focus better on the controllers and playing homebrew games!
