Just wanted to say thank you very! Your videos helped me diagnose a big moisture issue in my basement. I dug a trench outside the basement wall and found... corrugated pipe in sand with no fabric. And when it rains... it completely fills up and stays that way. I know what to do now! Greetings from the Netherlands!

The non-woven geotextile fabric at Menards called Duraweb is said to be 5.6oz and does not drain nearly as fast as the 8oz he shows. I wish I would've bought his 4oz. I didn't realize this guy was selling this stuff through his website.

What happens when the sediment closes the pores on the fabric. Silt will virtually stop the flow of water.
I heard you, I believe, say 6 inch overlap on the fabric in french drain. Would 6 inch overlap also be the standard if you running a perforated pipe and a solid pipe (w/ catch basin) in the same trench.
I have a triangular area approximately 2' x 3' and 24" deep south of my garage door that I filled with 5,/8 minus around 2 years ago for driveway runoff. It's plugged and my son came over to dig it out for me. I couldn't believe how much soil had invaded the gravel, it was as if it hadn't even been touched 24 months ago. Bought pond pebbles this time, but I can't find any geo fabric in a small quantity; I'm tapped this month but need to come up with something. Would lining the sides with landscaping fabric and leaving the bottom open work as a stopgap measure for the season? Thanks much for your time.

What if you did a 2 foot high burrito separately with 4 ml and also had a separate geo piece coming up the dirt side of the dich (against a curtain ditch of house) ? Would this be better fore the long run to keep fines out of the stone surrounding the burrito? Or would this be overkill?
Just watched "Apple Drain" guy talk about this same thing. He made it sound like it geofabic wasn't necessary. I wish one of you guys worked here where I live in Maine. Im about to do this myself but I'm little nervous.

It's really easy to see for yourself first hand how well it will work on your property Fill a bucket half way with your own backfill and fill the remainder of the bucket with water Then poor that water over the fabric "just as it was done here in the video" Needless to say, you will have your answers clear as day PS. the apple drain guy has learned first-hand why fabric isn't all its cut out to be - if anything, often times it only leads to more grief for home owners

I know at this point you have probably already done your drain. But I am currently torn bc the Apple drain guy has been doing it for 30 years and talks about all the drains he has replaced bc the fabric gets clogged. I don't see how the fabric on the pipe can clogg but the outside fabric doesn't.

I just did a small french drain in front of a basement window well that was flooding, and I just did bare gravel in the trench. Now I'm thinking maybe I should have did the fabric to line the trench but leave the top open. That might help keep the soil and gravel separated. I am convinced to completely wrap gravel in fabric in clay soil means it will simply clog and very little water will get through and carried away.

Would a commercial, lightweight lava rock work over the top of the fabric instead of replacing the sod over the fabric?

Excellent videos!!! I understand you're opposed to inlet basins for the reasons mentioned (debris) however, how do you join the ends of one 4 inch high octane to another 4" high octane pipe (a continuation of high octane)?

I had three step down concrete retaining walls put in on our sloping backyard to get more use out of it. I’m about to start the process of installing drainage for the walls. They are not very tall, 36, 36, and 32 inches tall. From what I’ve seen about the soil, it’s silty sandy soil for about 1-3 feet then clay. I would call you to help with this but your not in our area. I was thinking about using the drainage PVC pipe with clean drainage rock and wrapped with filter fabric. Would this work?

Yea, and they think the cheaper option of woven plastic fabric works better, it really don't work as water cannot penetrate landscape fabric, not same as geotech woven cloth fabric.

I have the same question. My hypothesis is that the fabric, fully clogged, won't be any less permeable than the (in my case clay) soil itself.

I've found 4-, 6-, and 8-ounce fabric online. For a crawlspace interior drain tile, I'm thinking 6 ounce is the good middle ground. Does that sound reasonable? The soil is clay.

This is nice video on the geo fabric. However it is not real world, none of your drains are left uncovered. You always add a couple inches of round rock, or you place sod 2” thick over the fabric. So rain would have to percolate through the sod, then the fabric to even get close to real world. The complaint is that is slows a lot and clay sediment seeps through and ends up in the closed French drain system. Eventually it will clog.
Eventually dirt and dust settles at the bottom and will prevent it from draining.

This test is useless everything works great in perfect conditions you put any kind of soil on the fabric eventually will affect the performance. I've watched this guy say hey if you don't wrap your French drains soil will migrate through the rocks and plug the system with the big holes in the pipe what do you think will happen with the small voids in fabric it's common sense it will diminish performance even quicker. It's like you and Apple drains are at war but at least when he did this test he put soil do show that yes when you do the flow gets greatly diminished.

Peter Last your the one that can’t see the bigger picture. There is no shortage of water where he is at, and the amount of water he wasted is nothing compared to the amount of knowledge he gave. Oh and no not all resources are finite for our purposes.
@lh985 жыл бұрын
crunch9876 your statement of "the amount of knowledge he gave" is humorous to me because that "knowledge" is to a limited crowd of ppl on this earth interested in something like this and his knowledge doesn't help the environment to prosper and enrich itself. Btw it's "you're the one" not "your". You must be one of those young folks that spent too much time on an Xbox instead of in class? All knowledge and insight should come at a wasteful cost to the environment?? With all due respect sharing some insight doesn't have to cost the environment or at least is shouldn't and should be more carefully managed. Just concern for Mother Earth and its' resources.
