I rescued one who had gotten slightly injured, when I saw a car hit him. I was young and didn't know too much about them. He could turn his head almost 360°, so I named him Pigeon Ex after the exorcist movie where the girl could spin her head around. My mom made me let him go when he was feeling better, but I don't think he wanted to leave.

We found a white racing pigeon in the parking lot of a local pharmacy trying to drink water out of a crack in the pavement. When we walked by she ran over to us and started following us. She let us pick her up and we could see she was not a wild pigeon, all white with 2 small black spots on her back and tail. She also wasnt banded. We took her home as we have a heated Ringneck Dove Aviary in our house. We named her Beauty and she has a Dove mate and is living the good life with us now.

Pet pigeon I've saved three now two were young ones bless them the last one I travelled at night for 2+ hours to the rescue centre by train bus and walking getting lost on the way and was worried he would freeze so I took my jacket off put it over the shoebox I was nearly crying thinking what if he/she died it didn't they collected it from me when I finally found the meeting place I got home 1am (partly walking) they told me it survived ! In fact all of the pigeons survived.

a white pet pigeon of an old co-worker of mine died at age 32, which is extremely old. She looked around for oldest pet pigeon information on the internet at some point after his death and too bad she didn't have an official birth certificate, else he would be the oldest one registered so far and get into the world guiness book of records.

I had one who lived 23 years (but the last two years completely blind). They are extreme ages and in captivity (good nutrition, security and care). In the wild, they live little, mainly due to predators. But this pigeon, protagonist of the video, is really amazing and special because of its behavior and expressiveness.

I had a mourning dove for 27 years; he was given to me as a gift from one of my students who raised them. It is amazing how much personality they have. Pearly was very gentle, and always cooing. He hated my cat (who would hang out under his cage) and my whippet (who would poke her head in his cage). He loved my greyhound though, and would pick his tail fur when he was out and about. The greyhound just ignored him. When I let Pearly out of his cage, the cat and whippet would go running, because Pearly chased them down!! Always funny. So glad you are giving Wednesday a good home, and be prepared, he may live longer than 20!

That's such a sweet story! I love the mix of species and breeds you had. A mix between dozy and crazy! ❤ As a greyhound mum of more years than I care to mention, it's very much an individual dog's temperament as to how good they are with other animals. Racers tend to only grow up with humans and hounds. Any number of my dogs haven't known what another breed of dog actually is! Our current boy would be more like yours despite being a racer. Unless there's a squirrel - they confuse him lol. (He's adorable but as thick as a brick! 😂) He's the most popular dog in the village with other dogs of every breed! There are even a few dogs (mostly smaller ones) who will bark and snarl at anything else, especially bigger dogs, but they all run to him and initiate play! Thanks for sharing your memories 😊

Well stated, animals just need to be treated with respect. I grew up with German Shepards, had cats all my life, spent 8 years working as a volunteer at a wild bird sanctuary. The last 23 years worked with hawks, falcons and owls (ten years teaching in education with my animals) as a Professional falconer. Every person and every animal is unique (and charachterful). As the saint Francis of Assisi staed 'they are our brothers and sisters'. Best wishes from the UK.

Yes I agree. They are sentient beings capable of huge ranges of emotion. Probably more than us sometimes. I hate the way people treat them without caring, without love and treat them like possessions to torture and hurt. Yes they are unique and wonderful ALL animals. IT annoys me when people call some vile person an animal. No love you'll find that's a human. So well said Nina Nord. Beautifully put.

Yes, animals always surprise me with how complex and intelligent they can be. Even animals I myself would have considered dumb or only acting on instincts, like my pet snakes... they really do have unique personalities and sometimes show behaviour that is not expected of them at all, like curling up on my tummy under my T shirt and going to sleep, or following me around the house like a dog!!

Awwww. I love the sound pigeons make when they breathe out of their little nostrils. The underside of their little feet is slightly soft and you can feel it warm up against your hand when they sit on you. They are so soft! I. Used to feed the pigeons and there was one who would come and perch on my finger whilst munching the seeds from the bowl. I would carefully extend a finger and stroke his underside =)

He is beautiful, a co-worker I know has 'pigeon pants' for their bird. A Freind & I rescue songbirds that hit the glass skyscrapers in Newark NJ, TRT made a video named 'Window Strikes in the Business District' of us picking up injured Warblers. In Newark most songbirds that hit the glass skyscrapers perish on impact, or when fall to the cement pavement. We rarely find pigeons hitting the Glass Skyscrapers, the 2 injured pigeons we did find were white fancy pigeons that people let go at weddings. Read the reason the homers fly home is that they miss their family (mate & babies). Good book 'Pigeons: The Fascinating Saga of the World's Most Revered and Reviled Bird ' by Andrew D. Blechman, I was not a pigeon fan but this book was very interesting, and I become more aware of how amazing these birds are

My family rescued a baby sparrow that had fallen out of its nest when I was a little kid. Unfortunately, having him was not a good experience! We had limited resources on knowing how to care for him (the internet was not as easily accessible as it is today), and I had a lot of resentment towards him because he literally NEVER stopped making noise (and I am extremely sensitive to sounds). I really thought I would never own another bird ever again. Well, fast forward about 20 years and now I own two adorable green cheek conures. I knew we needed to do things much better than we did previously, so my partner and I spent two years doing research on conures before we adopted them and frequently visited pet shops to get acclimated to the sounds again. I’m so sorry to that baby sparrow for not getting better care, but really grateful I am older and wise enough now to do it right this time around. Our birds are very happy and extremely loved, but they can be tricky pets for non-experienced folk. Please do your research before adoption, unless, of course, it’s some kind of critical situation (in which you might have to pick up knowledge along the way in order to rescue the bird).

22 years ago my husband found a pigeon on the side of the road. He couldn't fly and he was walking in circles around a sewer drain. The vet said his wing was broken in such a way that he'd never survive in the wild, he never did fly straight after that. So we kept him. When he was young, he loved to run through our pizzas we made at home, before they went in the oven. He sat on my husband's head to watch TV and ran along the back of the couch and would peck our ears. Don is still with us. He's been better than a dog for alerting us to things going on outside. He's demanding, not the least bit affectionate, but he's extremely intelligent and bossy, we'll miss him dearly when he finally leaves us. We're so glad we got to know about pigeons, just like you and your feathered baby. Wishing you many happy years!

They would patiently wait their turns, when I would feed them downtown. They would like up on my arm, and when there was no more space, some would rest on another's back, like double decker pigeons.
